Death Horizon seems quite lovely on first listening. Makes me hope for a Black Francis / Reid Paley / Mark Mulcahy supergroup album. |

Death Horizon starts with "This drink is tranquilizing" Could it be the same song as the one listed on BMI since 2013 as TRANQUILIZE ME ?

Interesting - Death Horizon sounds like pure Honeycomb / FMRM. looking forward to hearing all these in the context of the album.

TRANSMARINE has this demo. If he's still about he'd be able to answer that one. |

These are really cool, and I love how "affected" BF's vocals are. Reminds me of Bossanova era in a lot of ways.
Just hope he's not weirdly restrained on the record, as with Head Carrier. And also that TD somehow learned how to record something properly in the interim. Don't know if my heart can take another good batch of pixies songs dying in his butterfly jar |

I'm not overly confident
Strange also reading so many Joey's interviews where he states the Pixies (and him) went for something more experimental, with a harsher sound... and the first three songs we hear range from mellow surf pop (cool!) to catchy pop and garagey-pop... but I expected something more unexpected, à la Bagboy in terms of daring ideas

There is a lot to unpack on the vocal treatments on HC. There is a fairly heavy, liberal slathering of auto-tune on everything. And of course the ever pervasive compression + dynamic limiting. But I won’t go down that rabbit hole again.
The auto tune - if you haven’t used it before and aren’t familiar with how it works and sounds in different applications, you might not realize that’s what you’re hearing, but it’s here on almost everything. If you don’t crank it all the way up, it won’t do the trademark hitching and note jumping that it’s famous for, more of a weird smooth effect where the vocals ride too perfectly in this never wavering channel.
The other big vocal issue on HC, and it’s probably the most egregious vox party foul in FBF’s entire catalog, is Baal’s Back. And that includes some highly questionable production chooses on FMRM (which i love), I think TD recorded that vocal, and had never recorded anything like it (To be fair, almost no one has).
My supposition is he got so excited about it that he cranked everything about the vocal to 11, pushed it aaaaalllll the way forward in the mix, then applied about 3 or 4 automatic double track plug ins to it. It’s overwhelming, and not in a good way. That vocal should be sitting in the mix like his vox in Rock Music is, in my opinion.

... All that said, I really like HC a lot. I'm not a professional musician or producer, I'm just some asshole that knows enough to be dangerous and feel confident sharting my partially informed opinions into the gaping maw of the internet.

All sounds very sensible to me. As someone who bought all the Pixies 1.0 records back in the day on vinyl or casette so much modern music just sounds a bit weird without me knowing exactly what the elements that are making it sound weird are.. |

Really digging these new songs. Witching Hour strikes me as a Bossanovaish thing, kind of like Hang Wire. Can't wait to hear the album!
