Polishing his compressors and celebrating his work with an evil grin. In New York no less. Sorry Picpic.

Here’s the deal with the bricked new releases - it’s not going away. The Masses are so used to the sound, that clean, well mastered recordings with a lot of dynamic range sound weird to them. And with folks mostly listening to playlists and the like on Spotify, apple, etc, something that’s well mastered is going to cause a big drop in volume and those folks will get pissed. And they outnumber us. For my money, I have a volume knob on my stereo and I know how to use it. Most people either don’t or really don’t give a shit. Which is unfortunate.
I had a bad reaction to your public hobby writings. |

If it were up to me, I'd make a rule that every release after January 1st of so-and-so year had to be mastered at a rate that didn't involve brickwalling. Then I'd have the companies work backwords to ensure their prior releases meet the similar standard so the volume differences aren't there anymore over time.
Yet again, I don't have millions of dollars and time to force that onto others, so yeah. |

Meanwhile, Paz is playing piano in the studio. You can see the recording setup. Cool.
Good idea to bring new instruments. Is paz the new EDF ?

Recording the new album in a church, keeping in touch with their neo-Pentecostal roots?
Whatever the case, great pic and great post by Paz.
And yes Sprite, nothing is really enough to make Instagram worth the time consumption. |

You could always just find all their Instagram posts on the www.
But I get your bigger point. Always exciting to hear that new tunes are coming. |

Has anyone checked the BMI catalog lately ? I confess I'm a bit too lazy to do this right now.

They should have two mixes, one for audiophiles. We will pay. |

Screw audiophiles. I'm not listening to my favourite band on 20k speakers and gold-plated cables. Even on my IPhone+earbuds, classic albums sounds 20x times better than brickwalled modern records.
Hey Dalgety, just mix it normally. I'm sure you're reading this forum.

Paz seems to have changed that caption, now there’s no mention of a new album. Instead she linked to the photographer who took the picture (I’m not sure who it is but @pixiesofficial follows them). Sneaky!
----------------------- Q: Where do Pixies keep their instruments when they're not playing? A: Debasement. |

I second that. I would absolutely shell out for a 192 kbps, "unmastered" mix of IC, HC, and whatever is coming. Give me whatever you sent to the mastering dude before he smoked it like a cheap cigar. I'm sure it sounded spectacular in playback at the studio.

You don't have to be an audiophile to realize something sounds like garbage on a hot griddle, and you sure as hell don't have to spend 20K on gold plated cables.
The classic albums sound better because they were recorded on all analog by people who knew what they were doing, then mastered by people that weren't deaf, knew what they were doing, and were more interested in presenting what was recorded or maybe artfully pushing things into the red here and there, rather than just slamming the ever-loving digital fuck out of everything just so it doesn't sound different that the other horse-shit that was mastered the same way in Joe Sixpack's playlists.
Caveat to my "all analog" comment - analog doesn't necessarily have to mean better. But it's definitely harder from an engineering standpoint, and forced folks to pay more attention to what they were doing. And it's definitely more forgiving if you over-bake it.

Does the vinyl sound any better for either? I've vaguely looked for rips but never seen anything.. |

To my ear, yes. I don’t know what they pressed it from but it’s probably a much higher quality source than what you’d get on the CD and certainly better than streaming services. It’s worth picking up.

I hear you johnnyribcage, but digital don't brickwall records. Producers do.

But mastering happens after production, a producer can make a beautifully nuanced mix and some numpty can completely flatten it during the mastering so it sounds good farting out of an iphone speaker. The work of the same producer can be mastered completely differently for different media prior to release. |

True. But what I meant was digital VS analog is not the problem here. Brickwalling wasn't invented the day digital technology came out. Those are not related at all.
