And pray one day some un-mastered tracks will eventually find their way. They exist somewhere (and nobody cares but 5 geeks on an empty Frank Black message board).
Meanwhile, I listen to the 2nd Grand Duchy album. Sounds great.

I agree with you on all of this.
Maybe someday un-mastered tracks will be all the rage and the band can cash in by selling them to you and me.
Yes, 2nd Grand Duchy album sounds great. I miss albums that sound great. |

I tried again listening to this Planet of Sound podcast (last episode "life after the Pixies"), and they briefly talked about 2.0 production issues.
Their opinion was: well, Indie Cindy has a poor post-production, but HC sounds better and is going in the right direction.
Well, I have the exact opposite opinion. If you listen carefully, you can tell Indie Cindy is mixed in a nice way (it is Gil Norton after all), then things went bad at the mastering stage for whatever reason. For HC however, I think it's obvious that the whole thing has a retarded production from start to finish because it was just made to sound that way. At least that's how I hear it.

Regardless of whether or not some may feel that falling back on working with Gil Norton was too much of an exercise in familiarity, there's no getting around the fact that IC sounds like a record produced with great care and intense effort by someone who TRULY understands the band.
On the other hand, while the HC songs are clearly honed and rehearsed in pre-production to extremely tight, almost road-tested condition and there is a certain naive charm about the way these songs are sonically represented on the album, the record itself sounds (unsurprisingly) like it was produced in a fairly perfunctory / haphazard fashion by a guy who's used to working with metal bands but who PERSONALLY digs the Pixies and was looking for a change of pace in his career arc.
To me, it was neither slick enough to give me the shiny sci-fi vibe I know the band is easily capable of (and which was evident in spades on IC), nor stir-fried enough to result in the kind of raw, unvarnished intensity of the pre-Norton records or the early radio broadcasts many understandably salivate over.
So, it was stuck in some sort of limbo which I feel kept many of the performances from achieving that certain timeless quality the band has often conjured (although I do find MUCH to like about HC).
Honestly, I would LOVE to hear a full-on Pixies album recorded live-in-the-studio (but to multi-track, to allow for plenty of mixing and effects options later) at the newly reopened Sound City, where the eponymous FB & The C's and Pistoleros LPs were cut.
Just think for a minute about hearing Dave's drums with the same sort of thundering, analog room sound as on Scott Boutier's kit on those records, the slash and burn of FBF and Joey's amps cranked up to 11, and that dry-ish, in-your-face vocal presence from both FBF and Paz.
It would be the sound of those particular people on their comfortable stage gear in a great, warm-sounding space, with plenty of dynamic range on fat, plastic tape.
Just my .02, for whatever that may be worth.

Thanks for you input peter.
For my part i'm praying for a good old Norton mix with a normal, non-retarded mastering.

Wilson, you rock. Thanks for this tidbit, I was starting to worry they aborted mission on a new record even with all the clues from the first few months of the year that we saw. Glad to hear something is happening. Also happy to see you are still willing to check in here and throw us a bone, haha. |

This is excellent news, especially in light of the fact that no new material has been played to date on the summer tour. -oddball |

Oh Wilson, since you’re back, do you have insight into whether there were any b-sides recorded during HC?
I’m sure you were asked before but I can’t remember.
Thanks |

Charles has been posting lots of mad, fun videos on Instragram. One of them featured a man flicking through a book - 'Guncotton' featured as did some French lyrics. Don't think it signifies a new album but maybe we'll get the actual Guncotton film some day. |

Well it is Hanukkah right now! I’ve got a good feeling about this next album, I don’t know why.

Here's a link to the studio... looks like an awesome place. I love how jazzed Paz is to be recording new Pixies music... must be like aa surreal dream come true at times. Like she said... "Dreams really do come true"
http://www.dreamlandrecording.com/
So do we think these are the actual album sessions? I don't know, if this is an official session, it'd be cool to have the first new pixies album recorded in the US since 1991... or better yet, the first recorded in the east coast since 1989....
I think it's likely we'll finally hear some new tracks in their live sets this coming spring. Super exciting!

Can't find any Dalgety link to Dreamland studios, but Norton seems to have recorded there a few years ago with a band called Bayside.

I'm guessing Dalgety will be joining them there soon... if the band doesn't pack up and move the sessions to the UK again... this might just be a warm up/final demo session before the actual recording sessions with dalgety? Who really knows... |
