I thought it was a loop at first but yeah, sounds good :)
Those quieter parts will need to be cranked up to 11, obviously.... |

I seem to hear an acoustic guitar + Charles' power chords + Joey's bends
Sounds decently recorded

I like Dave's drumming on this. It's the thing that bugs me the most on HC.

I'm crossing my fingers that the album will be mixed/mastered similar to this.... sounds like a step up in production from Head Carrier. Love the synths that are playing underneath the end bit too. BRING EDF ON TOUR WITH YOU!!! |

This. Dave hopefully leaves the comfort zone he found on HC and varies things this time around. Goes hand in hand with the songwriting too as more transitions will allow the drums to be more creative. So far the live versions of the new songs have a good amount of variation in terms of tempo and the songs aren't just vanilla verse chorus verse with the exception of the Mark of Cain song to me. |

Sounds compressed / brickwalled, but dynamics aren't completely muffled, thanks god. Sounds like HC with treble.
Great music ! No brickwall will stand in our way.
And new logo. (I still prefer the Trompe-style "P" Pixies logo though)

Sounds a bit bricky, but leagues better than HC! Hopefully he doesn't hear it just before release and say, "hmmm not bricky enough, better fix that!" |

And, god willing, FBF's vocals are as unrestrained as they have been live |

I dig it - no way to judge audio quality from a YouTube vid of probably an early rough mix though, I’ll wait. But the tune sounds quite nifty!

Very very happy with the way that sounds, personally. I'm talking about the arrangement though and the music, not the production, about which I do not have a clue.

Drums sounds like a muffled pneumatic sledgehammer. But the music is great, of course. It's Pixies. Don't be grumpy. Don't be grumpy.

One thing about Dave’s drums, here and on all the other 2.0 stuff... I think a big part of the sound quality you’re referring to is his choice of snares. I think he uses several, but he seems to prefer big, booming, low tuned snares these days. I think the effect of that snare lends to some of the blunt effect of the new music. Even if it wasn’t subject to the loudness wars, it would still sound like that.

Yes probably. Plus the limiter/compression effect. But you’re right, his snare sound is almist the same onstage.

So I really enjoyed most of IC and HC, and I have a bit of a personal connection to Bagboy, even though I dislike it for reasons I won’t get into. But does anyone else around here get the feeling that this time around, Charles and the gang are really strategically trying to tee up their biggest attempt yet at a major, relevant comeback album yet with this one? I feel like the ongoing Weezer tour, plus the podcast hype, and the go-for-broke artisan crafted “Pixies” idiom vibe of the new tracks are all signs that they’re going for a moon shot with this one. Which is pretty damn exciting.

Trying to temper my expectations as the live versions of HC songs were also amazing, but then on the record Frank sounded like he was on a leash and TD shat on everything else. That said, every single one of these songs has kicked ass |

Surely feeling they're happy to be here, but not that they're aiming at mass market big success Catfish Kate, Mrs Mark of Cain and Take a little Drink don't sound like hits, they're more like Frank Black doing his usual stuff with a bit of Joey's recipes Saint Nazaire is Um Chagga Lagga 2.0 (though better and richer)
Only Graveyard Hill sounds like it could be a big hooky radio hit And Death Horizon has a Here Comes Your Man vibe to it, which is good
Overall I still feel they don't give a shit

Oh, they give a shit. Charles gives a shit. Their brand may be to appear that they don’t, but they do.
And I wasn’t trying to imply they wanted to have a “hit” song. They never did have any “hits.” They were always pretty under the radar.

Same opinion here. And I would say that they even make a lot of efforts to recapture 1.0 vibe and don't want to let their core audience down. Every project since 2.0 was pretty ambitious on that regard.

None of them sound very radio friendly to me but that might change with the recorded versions. Definitely none as pop-oriented as Tenement Song, Classic Masher or Greens and Blues from the first album. |

Been listening to this again and one thing I really really like is the space-y keyboard that comes in just at the end. Really gives me a surfy Velouria/Bossanova vibe. Which is dialling up my excitation levels. |

I did misinterpret
Not heard the full album yet, but I felt there was more effort and ambition (and obstacles) in IC. Sounded like Trompe's sequel, but not a copycat HC was rather safe, and 'mostly harmless' GC seems more diverse, with richer imagery and lyrics... I hear a mix of Surfer Rosa and Bossanova, coupled with FB's later stylistical additions. Wouldn't call it a moon shot though
Not looking past the podcast

I am getting a strong feeling that we are going to get a 15 song record when it's released. |

Yes Yes Yes!
Also great tweet from Joey today:
"We’ve been playing new songs that will be released in September. There are enough live recordings of Where is My Mind. Wouldn’t mind if you all record the new ones"
They are sounding fired up about this new record (and so am I)

cool sometimes a band is not allowed (by the label) to play too many new songs if the album hasn't been released yet glad to hear this isn't the case here i think a band should be able to play whatever they want
it's educational |
