Baal's Back, again
I will find some time to defend Tenement Song later this week. To me it's one of those songs that is much deeper than it appears, lyrics aren't any worse than HCYM and other classic Pixies tunes.
We should have started at the beginning to guess which song will survive until the end. |

Baals Back.
Cool song, but the way it sounds on the album is terrible.
And I don't want to kill another Indie Cindy track (2/3rds of the album is already gone !).

Alright, before anyone else votes down Andro Queen, I think we should all listen to the clip below. I get why so many skip this track – the production is blown-out, the arrangement doesn’t sound like a Pixies song, the meter makes it sound like it’s not even a BFB song – but it really is a beautiful song; lyrically and musically it is beautiful.
Listen to this clip (skip to 7:31). He explains the song and performs a stripped-down version that could be the best performance in the set:

Neither here nor there, but the version of “I Burn Today” is outstanding, too, IMO.
Thanks for that, great version! I'm already an Andro Queen fan though, to the point where looking down the list of songs that's left, I think it's definitely in the top 3, maybe even the best.
I Burn Today sounds great too, I've been listening to Honeycomb A LOT lately. Such a great album.
My vote is now Women of War, just never connected with it.

Starting to think Indie Cindy is underrated around here. So many great songs gone with lots of inoffensive filler still hanging about. Andro Queen again. |

Haha, you say IC is underrated then list an IC song to be chopped. |

Round 7 : Women of War weaker than the remaining field Sad also than several gems from IC are gone, but it's how Survivor works, sometimes the best ones are voted out in early rounds

Got me! Like sdon implies, it's the polarising tracks that suffer and unfortunately Indie Cindy seems to be full of them. |

Yes. But in a perfect world, this game should be played with hidden votes. I think it would give very different results. |

Yes I do. And it was fantastic when I saw it live. Miles better than Indie Cindy live. |

Sorry, I was talking about the album versions. I think Indie is in overall a better song, but the album version is obviously better than the (failed?) live renditions. Exact opposite for Baals: live version is punchy, album version sucks.

It's impossible to argue with you about the quality of the two album recordings Picpic. Even with that major disadvantage there's something exciting and surprising about the idea behind Baal's Back that Indie Cindy just can't hope to match for me... zzz... a song about doubting whether the audience will appreciate their new music. Not an easy concept to create a masterpiece from.
And then I just find it hard to listen to the macho but also weirdly stuttering and kind of hesitant lyrics/delivery of 'Put this down for the record'... to... 'Blowtorch a hole in that armor And I don't need the tip' |

Maybe I'm missing something in the lyrics (french-speaking here) but I also liked the minotaur theory
(http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21358)
Those lyrics sounded quite neat to me (most of the Indie Cindy album lyrics in fact) compared to HC.

Was this I was thinking about...
on “Indie Cindy” — for which the band also released a video on Tuesday — the band uses some of the sudden dynamic shifts that were its most recognizable signature. Mr. Thompson describes the track as a love song that reflects the anxiety of trying to seduce his audience all over again. “Indie Cindy, be in love with me,” he sings. “I beg for you to carry me.”
“It’s all about self-doubt,” Mr. Thompson explained. “It says to the audience: ‘I don’t know if this romance has still got what it needs to happen again. I don’t know if you’ll accept me; I don’t know if I accept you. But we have this memory. Can we do it again?’ ”

Will cut another track soon. If I cut now it's "Indie Cindy", which, admittedly, makes me a little sad.
We are approaching the point where nearly all IC tracks are cut (just IC, Andro, Magda and Boom are left). What gives? Do we really think that the *worst* track on HC is better than the *best* track on IC?
I can't help but think that some of us are underrating IC (maybe due to the production?) and overvaluing HC like it's a "return to form" (though none of their albums ever returned to a "form", IMO). Maybe we needed a bit more time after HC's release for us fans to offer up objective opinions.

I'd say on average the tracks on HC are superior to the tracks on IC. IC for me just feels a bit tentative and forced, HC is much more cohesive and in the zone. But there are certainly tracks on HC I would drop for ones on IC, however my faves off IC are not the popular ones (Snakes/Bell/Jaime). |

I prefer most lyrics on IC than those on HC Bagboy, Indie Cindy, Boom, Andro Queen, Hexe, Silver Snail... have great lyrics / imagery
IMHO, only Oona, All The Saints, Head Carrier and Baal's Back have decent lyrics

I gave up on the survivor after I saw them live. I picked Snakes then the song blew me live!
Know it's about album versions but hearing a song live changes how you feel about it. And although the only other song from IC was Magdalena that too was great.
So I'm finding it hard to choose, the body of work from IC and HC is solid. I'll let you guys choose! But IC is still stellar work.

Starting to hurt a little.
Going with Plaster of Paris. It's different and bouncy and fun, but besides the amazing job that Paz does on that track, the song itself doesn't have that much to sink your teeth into. |
