I thought this could be fun, interesting, and telling with regards to the Pixies 2.0 catalog. Now that we have two records and the RSD release (WoW) – and we’ve had a little time to digest HC – how about a game of Pixies 2.0 “survivor”? Below are the 25 tracks that the Pixies have released since re-launching their recording career. Call out which song you think should definitely go; I’ll tally the votes and put it on the chopping block after a week or so. In theory, we’ll end with 10-12 collectively solid tracks.

"All I Think About Now"
"All the Saints"
"Andro Queen"
"Another Toe in the Ocean"
"Baal's Back"
"Bagboy"
"Bel Esprit"
"Blue Eyed Hexe"
"Classic Masher"
"Greens and Blues"
"Head Carrier"
"Indie Cindy"
"Jaime Bravo"
"Magdalena 318"
"Might as Well Be Gone"
"Oona"
"Plaster of Paris"
"Ring the Bell"
"Silver Snail"
"Snakes"
"Talent"
"Tenement Song"
"Um Chagga Lagga"
"What Goes Boom"
"Women of War"

I’ll start with what I think is an easy one: “Another Toe”. After all this time, I’ve really never been able to get over it. It’s an easy pick (to my mind), but this will very likely get tougher as time passes. Let the voting begin now.

There is plenty of post-Pixies stuff he's done that would have made a better Pixies 2.0 album than these 9 songs, but that was a different game we played on a different thread.

No. Because Black Francis doesn't scream the same way he did. Because the songs don't have that 1.0 manic energy, when they were all in their twenties. Because Kim's sweet voice isn't there anymore. Because the songs are more straightforward. Because the lyrics are less abstract. Because the artwork is not as cool as it was back then. Because they look kind of older, for some reason. Because the sky is blue and it makes me cry.

Would it be a top 3 post-Pixies album from the man? Maybe.

Overall (except for Bagboy and Indie Cindy) it's definitely a yes for me

Can't fault the 9 that are left....would have found room for Bel Esprit and Might As Well Be Gone though!

So, is this thread dead? Or, have we arrived at the "best" of Pixies 2.0?

Funny, Oona is my favourite song.

I think it could fit an early FB record.

And All the Saints could fit Bossanova.

Third favourite is Tenement Song. It's catchy. Most other songs on the record are average/some are a little boring.

Of course it's impossible to match Pixies 1.0. But everyone knows that, including the Pixies themselves. How do you want to match Pixies 1.0 anyway.

Well I didn't say "match," I said "come close to."

Try calling 2.0 "Shwarma" and see if you like it better. I bet you will.

Baal's Back, despite the fact everyone else seems to like it :/

Round 11: Magdalena
Most boring of the remaining songs to me (studio version at least)

Looking at the 9 remaining songs, none of them come close to the sound of 1.0. Still, they're fun to listen to from time to time.

Voting against Oona again.

All I think about now is that Baal's Back is still on the list of survivors and beat out so many songs that sound so much better. Wow.....

And again, Plaster of Paris

MAWBG should still be around.
BunsenH Posted - 02/06/2017 : 11:48:27
Light participation this round. Looks like "Might As Well Be Gone" might as well be...

Might As Well Be Gone (3)
Plaster of Paris (2)
What Goes Boom (1)
Head Carrier (1)
UCL (1)
Oona (1)

Personally, I like MAWBG. It shoulda stuck around. My next round vote is *still* for "Head Carrier".

My favourite songs on IC are still there: Oona, All the Saints and Plaster of Paris

Oona's chorus could have been a little bit better, I guess, not as strong as the rest of the song, all those hooks and then those not very interesting chord changes and melody arrive. But everything surrounding the chorus is brilliant, as far as I'm concerned.

Plaster of Paris. Don't understand how it got this far.
Bedbug Posted - 01/26/2017 : 01:41:17
Oona. Sounds great at first but starts to drag and get predictable.

Tough to pick one from the final bunch...

UCL. Live it's very good, studio one hit and miss depending what mood I'm in.

agree that Head Carrier is too long
So is Might As Well Be Gone

"Head Carrier"

It's just that it drags on -- it's about 2 minutes too long, IMO. It also sounds too derivative -- like it wants to be "Bone Machine", but then Dave noticeably re-uses that fill from "Debaser", on the choruses.

Dang - we still want to play? I thought we could quit after widdling the down to 12 songs ("album length"). But, OK. My Round 9 down-vote goes to "All I Think About Now". Too derivative, slow, boring. The vote totals are spread really thin, again representing our inability to agree on good/bad tracks in the 2.0 era:

Bel Esprit (3)
All I Think About Now (3)
Baal’s Back (2)
Plaster of Paris (2)
Might As Well Be Gone (2)
Oona (1)
Un Chagga Lagga (1)
Magdalena (1)
What Goes Boom (1)
