Did you just stumble across this? Would love to hear more as well. I'm curious if TRANSMARINE would be willing to share the demos yet? |

Thanks vilainde. So great. I really dig the synth bass (and actually also the programmed drums).

Suggests to me that at some stage we could potentially had an album of songs that hewed a little closer in tone/aesthetic to Bagboy. |

lovely demmo, thanks very much!
i suppose it's a very obvious thing to say about a demo but it really brings home the different directions that production could have taken.

glad you like it. I'll post some more Easter eggs (I don't have many though). Do people still do the rickroll thing? I'm tempted.

I seriously doubt it. They just hate the guy. The highest rated album is DITS with 7.8. SMYT got 5.4 and Oddballs got 5.2! These guys are hopeless.

It's nice to be able to make out the bass part a bit more too. Rather buried in the 'Indie Cindy' tracks. |

The one thing that is different is that the Pixies name makes a huge headline in the music media as opposed to the footnote that BF solo albums often received.
Music reviewers need artists more than the artist needs reviewers, they are a parasite of the music industry where without the music their existence would be obsolete.
If this had been a BF album Im sure the reviews would be the same - critisicing it for what its not rather than judging it for what it is.
The problem is, when reviews criticise an album for what its not, they are often forgetting that the body of work they are comparing it against is still available to listen to!
I have admired BF when he has appeared in the media as he takes no BS and if this is why his art gets a raw deal by the people who make a livign writing about him and his peers then to hell with them!
Its interesting that his twitter is now locked to followers only. |

Interesting but disappointing, as it was enjoyable to follow BF on twitter. Have some good insight and context to his career at this point. Bummed out. |

This is great news. As ever, worth saying that I hope they move forward with Paz full-time. Hope to hear a studio cut of Classic Masher sometime.
Maybe they'll drop another EP sooner than we think... |

Always good to hear, but I don't like the implication that the response to the album has been scathing. There have been some overly negative reviews and some insanely positive ones. Overall though, looking back at all the review links that have been posted, I'd say the average leans more positive than negative. These articles kinda set the tone that it's been a disaster, which sucks and isn't true. Now Joey's comment is coming off like," Hey, we fucked this one up. We'll do better next time". |

Joey ain't used to bad reviews. Old hat for Mr. Francis. Look at Teenager of the Year.
"Though originally panned by critics and fans for its bug-eyed sense of humor and perceived lack of focus..."
"Teenager of the Year is the kind of cerebral pop masterpiece that could only be deemed a disappointment in the wake of such an indomitable precedent as the Pixies."

Thinking they may have failed (which they haven't) might not be a bad thing. If they're pushed to go all out maybe we'll end up with something completely unexpected.
The main reason I'm not worried is that a lot of the criticism would be quite hard to specifically action, so I don't think specific points will end up directing the band down a certain path. I've seen as many reviews call Bagboy the weakest track as have called it the strongest. Likewise Magdelena, Blue Eyed Hexe, Snakes and Greens & Blues. There's nothing close to a consensus on the album's strength and weaknesses, which added to my view that a lot of the harshest critiques (Pitchfork, Kitty Empire for the guardian) seem to have decided they don't like the album because it doesn't have Deal on it, so have looked for a few random things to zero in on to shore up their preconceived views and hit the wordcount. Even by the often tenuous standards of music journalism I've read some downright sloppy reviews - right down to one of them criticising Paz's bass-playing and vocals - which displays a monumental inability to read sleevenotes and shows that the reviewer lacked even a remote grasp of the band's chronology. Not least because Bagboy came out years back and Paz's name hadn't even been floated in relation to the band when the first EP was released.
Probably repeating myself, but for the most part the criticisms or misgivings I have relate to the change in circumstances between the writing and recording of some of the songs, which led to things like the faux-Deal vocals on Bagboy, which was really an open goal for critics, some of whom have ludicrously decided to twist into making it seem like the band deliberately tried to slight Kim. That chapter's well and truly closed now, so won't repeat next time (especially if they stick with Paz for studio duty *if i say it enough it will happen*)
I don't think Joey has anything to worry about though. I suspect Indie Cindy's going to have a better name in a few years than it does now, (and tbh the starting point isn't that low, i've read more positive reviews than negative) and I suspect some of the people slagging it off now will find themselves putting the album on repeat a hell of a lot more than they suspect. Off the back of the EPs I thought the critical consensus was going to be that the album was bad full stop, which I was wrong about. |

The way I see it there are two clear groupings, uber-fan types who wanted the album to be really really good and some critics who (for their own variety of reasons) want it to be really really bad. The reality is somewhere in between of course but even trying to stay objective its closer to really good than really bad.
Somebody on the forum who heard the tunes a long time ago said it was pretty solid. And I think that is basically right. But I'm hoping the next one is spectacular. |

I remember a guy posting in here that he was a writer for Pitchfork at the time DITS came out and gave the album a 7.8 review, but it ended up being cut down to 7.3. That initial score must have freaked some editors in that place, it was awfully close to acknowledging that such an uncool guy had made another fantastic record.
Still, that "Bug-eyed sense of humor" quote, regarding TOTY, that's what I miss the most on the new album. It's solid, yes, some songs stronger than others of course, but there's very little sense of fun in the songwriting. Maybe that's why some people were immediately taken by Women of War. It's not stronger IMO than what's on the album, but it's a blast to hear, because it sounds and feels like a fun song. And it's not like Frank hasn't come up with fun songs in the near past. Stuff like You're Gonna Pay or The Conjuring, Seven Fingers, Six-legged Man, all have this side to them that I feel is lacking on these new songs, all of them very serious, very self-aware of the weight and expectations everyone had.
I guess it's only natural, due to circumstances. Hope they can come up with even better stuff the next time around.

Reading that review of Teenager just makes me want to listen to it. What a great album!
I thought they were going to review all their own albums, oh well.
Dog in the Sand is a 10 for 10; I don't understand. The only complaint I have with the album is the placement of Blast-Off, I'd prefer it as the penultimate track; but I give Frank and the Catholics credit for opening with an unconventional jam track.
