The release dates are all supposed to be a surprise. Me, I don't seem to be on the mailing list, but if you follow Pixies on Facebook or Twitter, you should be covered. Also, all of the relevant music news websites will post about it two seconds after the announcement. And, of course, someone will post it here. |

I got excited when I saw this topic back up top. I thought maybe it came out yesterday and I missed it. :-(

Crap. Exact same boat here. I'll take a deep breath and go back to scrolling aimlessly and glaze-eyed through facebook posts about Christmas and that Duck Dynasty guy.

i got a feeling we'll be getting e-mails in about 2.5 hours or midnight on the East Coast USA - they could claim the unique distinction of being the first release of 2014.

First impressions:
- Blue Eyed Hexes: really sounds like the live version brodcasted of few months ago. Great powerful short tune, Epic Joey solo... Favourite one (so far). - Magdalena: sounds a little like "all over the world" mixed with "havalina" - Greens and Blues: powerful melody. I like the very Pixies-ish chords progression. There's something about this song...., i've got the indistinc impression that I've heard it (or parts of it) before. - Snakes: Pretty evident melody. boom, boom, boom, almost a dancefloor song !
Sounds like Frank used his SG on the whole record ! Heavy sound. Little loud / overcompressed, but very coherent with EP1.
Regrets: no Classic Masher... :-(

Wowza, Greens and Blues is nice. Hadn't played the live versions much so it seems fresh to me. Did the opposite with Magdalena - loved the live versions and now it's gonna take a bit of time to get used to the studio take.
Blue-Eyed Hexe sounds fucking great - I was a bit apprehensive about it from the Jools performance but they've done a good job. Snakes.. requires further listens.

Dunno if those Gigantic comments are gonna go down well with the reactionary 'no kim, no deal' crowd. Not that that really matters. |

Hate to be the voice of dissent, but I really don't care for Blue Eyed Hexe, love all the rest though! Sounds more Frank than Pixies to me, but that's not a problem. Snakes has a They Might Be Giants-esque quality to the lyrics.

"Frontman Black Francis has said that the track 'Greens And Blues' was written in an attempt to write a song as good as 'Gigantic' which they could play at the end of their live sets"
This is going to cause some nasty remarks, Maharal.

David on Magdalena: David Lovering added, "One of my favorites, maybe tied with 'Indie Cindy.'
I agree with him.

OK got it: parts of Joey guitar riffs on "Greens and blues" reminds me of "I hear ramona sing".

From the press release:
'Blue-Eyed Hexe' Black Francis said: "It's a tale from the northwestern part of the UK, and it's a witch-woman kind of a song. That's what a 'hexe' is, and ours is a blue-eyed hexe." Joey Santiago added: "Gil wanted a swagger, he wanted the guitar solo to sound like you're going to have sex with this blue-eyed hexe."
'Magdalena' "This song is so atmospheric," says Santiago. "We had these weird Moog pedals that sounded like water. It was a very mood-based, atmospheric sound, not based on any lyrics or anything." David Lovering added, "One of my favorites, maybe tied with 'Indie Cindy.' It's cool the way it flows, and it's a very simplistic song, very pretty, cool and moving."
'Greens and Blues' Black Francis says, "As with all my songs, I would prefer people add their own interpretation to it. But, in this case, let's just say that we had done 'Gigantic' as the closer for many years at our reunion shows and it worked really well. But I could see that we were going to grow weary of that and I felt like we basically needed a better 'Gigantic.' It was my attempt to come up with another song that would - musically, emotionally and psychologically - sit in the same place that 'Gigantic' has sat. Not that I could ever replace that song: you write songs and they come out the way they come out. So perhaps it can be said that this song fills the emotional niche that 'Gigantic' occupied, another show-closer. I think the lyric alludes to that, the fact that it's the end of the night, the end of something. And a separation if you will, between the band and the audience. So I guess it's kind of a goodbye song, or really more of a 'good night' song."
'Snakes' "I'm not a jammer," says Santiago, "but Black Francis and I started jamming it out. I had this little idea and I did that sliding guitar just to emulate a snake." Black Francis adds, "This one was totally written in the studio session. It proved to be a little bit difficult to play and a little bit difficult to record, sonically, but we stuck with it and I like the result." |

Wow that compression/over production... Songs are decent, though overall less interesting than EP1. And ep's still have no flow or identity!
I'm grateful for new music, but I hate this no album crap. With the production toned down a touch and an intelligent track order they would have had the makings of a killer album with some of these songs.
Initial ratings: Hexe- 7/10 Magdalena- 8.5/10 (would be a ten with more balanced production, sounded better live!) Green and blues- 7/10 Snakes- 6/10 |

Green and Blues is the new Another Toe In The Ocean productionwise (to me, at least). Very very slick. It works and the song is nice.

Finally its here. Excellent, when's the next one?
Love love love G+Bs and Magdelena, very bossanova to my ears and i love that.
I have loved blue eyed hexe since the jools show. Its a great track. Proper stomper.
Snakes kind of feels like something from non stop erotik. Kind of spooky with a mariachi vibe.
All in all, great release. Life to the Pixies. |

I'm not sure of the lyric, but in Magdalena where Frank goes "Magdalena...you're the meanest" or in the second verse "just between us" does that melody remind anyone of Anna Lee from his s/t album? |

YES!!! Finally, new music. Although, I would've been happier with an additional never-before-heard song but it's nice to hear the studio versions of G+B, Blue-eyed Hexe and Magdalena. Snakes doesn't really sound like anything the Pixies have done before but that's cool. Favorite track is definitely G+B so far, but I like all of them. This time there's no Another Toe ie track that I have reservations about.
I'm beginning to think they're saving Classic Masher for an eventual LP. Hopefully, we'll get that sooner rather than later.
Now, hopefully they'll bust out some other new tracks on the upcoming tour...
