pretty good. frank sounds very engaged on blue eyed and greens. that's so important and encouraging to hear.
did they do a friday release to stave off reviews for a couple days? |

Pitchfork: Following last year's let's-forget-it-happened EP-1, the perpetually bass-player-embattled Pixies have returned with another new EP, the not-so-cleverly-titled EP-2.
I can't wait for their review

Definitely reminiscent. I thought that from the live versions, too. 'Adda Lee' was always one of my favorites off that record. |

Hell yeah, once again I enjoy that feeling of seeing the email from pixies and the words It's Here!

I feel the same, it's got some quirk especially with his vocal timing and delivery. Diggin it. Only one I've listened too so far, but I'm very happy with the end result. |

I agree there is too much compression, but it seems to work better with G&B than Another Toe. G&B has a lot more space in it, so my ears aren't worn down the same way as with Another Toe.
Also, I kind of like the two guitar lines in the beginning (one slide guitar and one doing the chorus melody). If there was less space, and with the Another-Toe-Level compression, these guitars wouldn't be heard at all. |

Overall I think I'm diggin EP2 more than EP1. The production again is a bit heavy. In most cases I think these songs come off better live... Magdalena especially. I was hoping for a longer sonic intro from Joey before the song kicks in like he's been doing live, but there's just a few squaks before Francis starts his part. Joey's atmospheric noise really sets up the atmosphere of the song live. Also I kinda prefered the early live versions where Francis sings the "oooohs" an octive lower.
Those are my two bits, besides that I think the ep is great and I can't wait for more. Bring on the tour! |

Yeah, it's been front and center on most reports of the new EP so far . Gonna be a topic for discussion to be sure.
Can't listen on my iPad it seems, guess it's just Blue Eyed for now.

"Andro Queen" is still my favorite of the new songs, but this is great stuff. Been playing it all morning. "Greens and Blues" is pretty classic pop.
REALLY like "Snakes". Joey's playing has always had a little sprinkle of the Spaghetti Western sound in it and this track is all about that. |

Wonderful comment on one of the Facebook posts:
So, what's with the inverted pentagram on the Pixies music site? Since when did Pixies resort to pagan/satanic symbolism instead of the art and photography they're known for? Just not the same. Maybe because Kim Deal left.

Hey picpic, i thought the same on G+Bs. The intro sliding up and down sounds slightly like the bass intro to I Bleed i think.

I hope so, because right now on the studio version there is no harmony. Just Francis doing a high part. I'd love for him to do the lower octive ooohs like he did when they first played it live, and Paz take the higher ooohs to harmonize. That'd be nice. |

My first thoughts of studio vs live Hexe: better than live versions, riche, more complex Magdalena : better than live versions, more abrasive, less 'obvious' Greens : live versions were better, faster, less "cheesy" Snakes : no comparison, sounds more FB than Pixies

I held off on listening to any of these in their live forms until today. Otherwise, here's my initial ranking for now...
1. Magdalena 2. Greens and Blues 3. Blue Eyed Hexe 4. Snakes |

I don't know about this one fellas. I am already tired of Greens and Blues, and Magdalena. Hex sounds like a straight up 70s rock song, in a good way but I can't see myself listening to it much. G&B sounds like it has a pavement guitar riff.
Snakes is cool though.
Oh well, maybe it will grow on me. |

Have to admit it doesn't do as much for me as EP1 which blew me away immediately with Andro Queen and Indie Cindy but I loved Greens & Blues almost straight away. Magdalena is great too but the other two aren't doing all that much for me yet. Especially Snakes... Feels a bit of a non song at the moment... |

Hmm... I purchased the big bullshit edition with hoody, vinyl, mp3s and all that jazz, but I haven't had an email with any links to the digital downloads. Anybody else experienced this?

@pixiestu maybe it ended up in your spam folder, if not Top Spin seems to be pretty responsive to customer queries.
Overall I'm digging the ep so far. I think listening to both vinyls back to back could be interesting. Also I think Bagboy plus the two eps could make for a nice playlist right there, a third ep would be icing on the cake.
I agree with the Greens and Blue, Weezer comparisons, it's kind of like Weezer and Doolittle era Pixies in some ways. Magdalena also Bossonova sounding like has been said here. I think Snakes is pretty cool too - has some interesting guitar ideas and I could see it being cool live. Blue Eyed Hexe not bad either - I think it fits along the other Pixies screaming songs even if it has a bit of an AC/DC thing going on in it.

Magdalena is definitely my favourite. I'm enjoying Blue Eyed Hexe a lot as well. I think Greens and Blues is a good one too, might have listened to it too many times since the spring, though that is no one's fault but my own. Don't know how I feel about Snakes, might be the Another Toe of the album for me - both of which have over produced chorus vocals - might be a grower as well.
1. Magdalena 2. Blue Eyed Hexe 3. Greens and Blues 4. Snakes
or
1. What Goes Boom 2. Magdalena 3. Blue Eyed Hexe 4. Indie Cindy 5. Greens and Blues 6. Andro Queen 7. Bag Boy 8. Snakes 9. Another Toe
I think 1-7 there are among the stongest material he has released in years. |

Nope, I checked it. Not to worry, I have found other means of getting the songs but I've contacted Topspin anyway so we shall see. I just want some proper confirmation of my order for the vinyl!

The digital files aren't e-mailed to you. They're downloadable straight from the site after you purchase.
If you didn't even get an order confirmation e-mail (I got one), I suggest double-checking to make sure your order went through. Check your credit card charge or your Paypal account (whatever you used). |

"Greens and Blues" is a reasonably nice song but it's not even in the same league as "Gigantic". BF calling it a better Gigantic comes across to me as a typical passive-aggressive Pixies fashion of flipping the bird to Kim Deal. I guess he finally gave up hope she's ever coming back. (The foregoing was based on misinformation and I would like to take it back.)
I really like "Snakes". As some have said, it sounds like a Frank Black solo song, but as far as I'm concerned that's a good thing. It's certainly nothing like the boring generic radio rock that is Another Toe.
So, I'm finding no songs on EP2 that I dislike, which is a big improvement. Magdalena is my favourite so far. Lovely quirky Pixies. Reminds me of Bossanova.
Hexe is great too. It does sound a bit like AC/DC but I don't see why that's bad. It's hardly the first time Frank channels some other band or artist. Hermaphroditos is like the Rolling Stones, Cult of Ray (the song, not the album) sounds like Bowie, quite a bit of his stuff sounds like Lou Reed, etc.
Also, EP2 is on YouTube in full already? It's not even been out for a day. Give them a chance to sell a few copies, FFS.

Same for me, no song on EP2 that I dislike However, no song on EP1 or EP2 awed me as much as Bagboy, which remains for me the best material they released since the reunion, and the most original. Personal top: (only considering recorded studio versions)
