There are plenty who don't like it and plenty who do. I recall discussions with several people when it came out as to how good it was. In my local circle of friends, there are about 5 or 6 FB fans (all of whom I introduced to the music), and they all feel the same way I do. So of everyone I personally know who likes FB, 100% of them really like Honeycomb.

tangent! Where The Wind Is Going is a good song. i like it a lot. but the FMRM version is truly lame. just pathetic. the catholics would have torn that shit up!
i wish frank recorded the HC and FMRM albs with that awesome band. they could do classy and rock n roll with some balls. those albums substantially lack balls. however, i love half of FMRM.
but i digress. who cares if his side projects aren't that great? as long as his proper solo albums CONTINUE to be outstanding.
it's funny that oldmanthreadstarter admits that he's really only disappointed with NSE (as far as proper solo albums go). so what's there REALLY to be disappointed with? grand duchy? who cares?! it's a SIDE project. so long as it's on the side.

That's more or less what I think of the Paley/Francis album. The songwriting is really good.

It would be interesting to see a poll of most loved songs since the end of the Catholics era. Despite anything I've written on here, there are definitely a whole lot of recent songs I love. |

Post-Catholics top 5:
1) Don't Get Me Wrong 2) The Real El Rey 3) Threshold Apprehension 4) Meet Me At The Ghetto Gates 5) When They Come To Murder Me
In terms of songwriting, My Terrible Ways, Dead Man's Curve, Seal and Praise would be on the list.

that's right, we're turning this thread into a "bask in the glory of this latter BFB period" series of lists and hyperbolic gushing.

Honeycomb was good at the time, but I never go back to listen to it. FMRM was awful. I even forced myself to listen and cringed all the way through. Maybe a couple of good tracks, but it really is the nadir of his career.
I don't think I've given The Golem enough of a listen to fully appreciate it, which is daft really. NSE and SvnFngrs both had some great tracks on them. Bluefinger was great.

The Golem was pretty good. 'Svn Fngrs' is my favourite out of the last few years, I think.
I can't remember when I listened to 'Honeycomb' or 'Fastman Raiderman' last. There were some very good songs on both, and some rather forgettable tracks too. It's a shame really... many great musicians, but the arrangements and production really show up the fact that the albums were made in a short space of time.
The big factor is the Pixies reunion. It's actually taken up quite a lot of FB's time. Plus I guess it's been fairly lucrative (long overdue), which must have taken the pressure off his own output. So he can probably afford to be a bit more playful than before. |

I also wouldn't say I'm disappointed with his recent work, Bluefinger and Svn Fngrs are two of my favourite FB albums, and the Golem and NSE both have many great songs. I would say that apart from the Dog in the Sand/Black Letter Days/Show Me Your Tears run, the post (and including) bluefinger era is my favourite FB era since after Teenager. i enjoy the new Black Francis persona and this many of the songs released during this period are among his best work.
I'll also attempt a top 5:

I think FBF will be back with a blinding record soon. NSE did nothing for me, Golem made me very happy. Hang around, there's something for everyone.

'Radio Lizards - acapella' version??? Could someone make this available or is it part of single FB released?
As for the topic at hand, I'd agree with Brank_Frank, the post (including) Bluefinger era is my favourite FB era since TOTY. Bluefinger, The Golem and too a lesser extent, NSE, are records that I keep coming back to.
But then, I never was a big Catholics fan, like most of you seem to be. Great live band, but apart from Dog in the Sand, those albums were always too hit or miss. Kind of like FM/RM, but with more nerve. |

Hi Velvety - i'm referring to the Christmass version. Where the only instrumentation is provided by vocals. |

Yep - there is a version on one of the podcasts which is guitar based. Cool as well but i prefer the Christmass one. If you have the christmass dvd you can hear the other version playing at the title screen. |

i think his work is always stellar, but i was listening to bossanova last night, and well those songs make you feel something outside of your body, i dont think he has written any songs like that since christmass. i dunno nse feels, warmed over?

I agree, the Christmas version of deadman's curve has yet to be topped. It's awesome and it's the best. Something was definitely lost when it was done with the electric guitar. |

But back to the topic at hand.. I often have a negative feeling about FB's tunes when they first come out, and then warm to them overtime. I think it comes with the superfan territory (sorry, I couldn't bring myself to use an umlaut). But ultimately, it varies with each releases' songwriting, recording quality, my general mood, and a bunch of other things.
Out of the newer recordings, I really dig seven fingers and golem. I think I would like Paley & Francis a whole lot more if it weren't for the production value (and to be honest, I find Spooner Oldham's keys to be extremely distracting in places). If anyone has some good recording of this material live, it would be appreciated.

And might I remind you that I too am allowed to write my opinion, which I did. Might I also remind you that I did not in any way suggest that the OP's opinion was without merit, only that I disagreed and thought the Yoko comparison was a little harsh. I can voice my opinions without feeling the need to appease your particular sensibilities. Similar to the Grammer Police, many people insist on seeking opportunities to explain to others, often strangers, the apparently complex and subtle concept of opinions.
