It's typical for Japanese editions to have bonus tracks, as incentive for customers to buy the domestic CD, as opposed to the cheaper import. |

When it was first posted it was just described as coming from the NSE sessions. A possible B-Side? There was some story about bf freaking out a little while taking a piss in a haunted London recording studio.

Boy, that Ghost Coming just reeks of Pixies. Throw in some noisy-reverby Santiago thrangs and bends and it could have been somewhere in the last third of Doolittle. Or anywhere on Bossanova for that matter...Maybe...I don't know - first impressions... That pre-chorus kind of reminds me of The Happening
I love this part... Yeah, we did it! |

Ghost Coming sounds like a variation on an FB&C track I can't recall the title of. It's nothing like the Pixies at all I think. |

It sounds a bit like The man of steal (slow psyché garage surf and guitar sound), Stupid Me (the rythm), and most of all Rabit Hole. Nice song. But the production could have more relief, especially in the chorus, that could take off a little bit. Sounds like the drummer is from kraftwefk and that sound wall is quite flat (nice but allways the same). Frank's songs are almost allways good but when they got that flat treatment it doesnt serve them. |

It's a very rough demo; certainly not the finished song! There's an interview somewhere where he discusses the story. Drinking with Glen Hansard in Dublin, I think. |

The headline alone tells you what kind of person penned this ridiculous piece of "journalism." I can imagine some snippets from other articles: "..this musician was wearing some great tight jeans and scarf that was tastefully, purposely, and tactfully out of season. He also shares the hairdo of every girl you've ever seen working at a Cost Cutters. It's a fabulous album..."
"...this musician was wearing a flannel shirt! "Hello, 1998 called..." "What a terrible musician."
Oh my gosh, a guy in his 40's writes honest and graphic songs about sex! How gross--I thought only teenagers had sex. I hope this eye-opening article will open up Mr. Francis eyes. He needs to realize that he should put down his guitar and collaborate with "Pink" on a single, and write lyrics about what kind of dance moves he prefers to do while on the dance floor. If he fails to do this, I fear he'll never be taken seriously as an artist and won't be found relevant by members of the modern intelligentsia, such as our friend over at the Boston Phoenix.

Haha, well said jackruby. However, i would actually be interested in a song detailing what moves Frank cracks out on the dancefloor... though perhaps not with Pink. |

I looked up a couple of that jackass's other articles through that link.
He was quite happy with the release of a song called "Hatefuck" by soome band called The Bravery.
Then I read of Carly's love of something called La Roux. And. Well. Jesus. I'm glad he doesn't like Black Francis. If he did, I might have to find another music hero.

Since this has turned into a rage against the critics thread, you guys might love to hate this article that was posted after Grand Duchy played in my town of Chicago last year- http://consequenceofsound.net/2009/07/26/grand-duchy-fizzles-out-at-wicker-fest-724/
Be sure to check out the comments section on that one. Also, while everyone has been enjoying THE GOLEM, I haven't heard anything about any new NSE leaks. Any News? I can never get enough. |

It's a wonderful song but the final mix was... I'm not sure. Is it just me or does it sound like there's too much going on? A bit overdone on the instrumentation, maybe? |

Coiled music, doesn't scream right out the wires. Stays in the wires. I'm getting used to it though.

Comparing Rabbits to Der Golem should get you kicked off the forum (teasing).
I like instrumentation. I really like what's going on on Der Golem. It might not be a great comparison, but there's an organic feeling to Ralph Carney's contributions. A bit like Neutral Milk Hotel. But, Rabbits. I'm reminded of riding an elevator. |

In here it's seems like most people want every song to be a traditional screamer, with lead-guitar and straight production, and I guess that's why you're dissapointed by "Rabbits". I'm not that kind of Frank Black fan at all.
That's not why I'm disappointed by Rabbits at all. I think darwin's 'elevator' comment is sort of apt. I was hoping for the song to sound a little more intimate than it does. Softer. There are just too many synths and other things going on.
Maybe it's a grower, though. Frank does a good vocal job and the production fits well with the other NSE songs. |

Not to double-post, but instead to open new discussion for new BF record. Hope it's not a joke... Carl posted the original NME article in the fb live forum:

quote:
"After his set, Francis told NME.COM that he was heading straight into a nearby studio to record the final track for his new solo album, which he revealed will likely be called 'Non-Stop Erotik'."
Title comes from Grand Duchy press release:
http://musicremedy.com/g/Grand_Duchy/album/Petits_Fours-6329.html
“I guess Luxembourg isn't exactly St. Tropez, either. But we could rule our Garage Rock Synth Chick Non-Stop Erotik Poussez-Poussez Dominion from a place like that. Just a little place on the river, in the ravine, in the trees, in the stars. Our pied-de-terre. A place to stop on our way to your European nite klub.”
which is in turn a Soft Cell reference, yes?:

It's not that Rabbits is a bad song, I just had higher hopes after hearing the live version. Same with Dead Man's Curve. I expected Rabbits to be a bit more acoustic, but it sounds like a lullaby (which might be the point). DMC isn't quite raw enough and when Frank does scream it sounds forced, like he figured that's what he was supposed to do. I'm being picky though.

I'm there, too. I very much prefer the Cafe du Nord version. Still, a great song, despite the strange instrumentation (including that bizarre humming sound -- what is that?).
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |
