That's the funny thing about this record. I absolutely love Wheels. I just read a review in French that raved about Rabbits and hated 6 Legged Man. Blackolero loved O My Tidy Sum and didn't like Wild Son. I've yet to see 2 persons who have the same opinion on the album's tracks. Don't know what that's supposed to mean though.

Yeah, it's certainly turning out to be one of the more polarising albums, isn't it?
I've gotten used to it a lot more now. 'Lake of Sin', 'Corrina' and 'Cinema Star' still stand out for me though. |

I really love wheels too. I love the Flying Burrito Brothers version, and I love what Frank did to this one. It sounds great coming after Rabbits and gives the album even more variety.

'When I Go Down' is a standout for me, O My Tidy Sum, Dead mans curve and Cinema star are next.
Im not a fan of Wheels at all im afraid (and I tend to agree with Prindle about the title track).
Im really enjoying the album, but not as much as the Golem.

If I may correct that... The opinion reflected in this review is its author's only, personnally I almost entirely do not agree with it and I think Wild Son is a great track on the record. I wonder what the others think about the album, especially Jediroller and Ray La Manta(well he already gave us some insight actually)!
Hum, this message was to add to the idea that indeed, we all do seem to have different visions of NonStopERotik(the better, I guess).
Quick personal thoughts:
Lake of Sin / a bit better in my opinion than what I thought at first. Oddly, I don't know where this comes from, but I tend to think to Trompe Le Monde songs(Palace of the Brine and Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons that haven't much to do with it I know) when I listen to that song and it makes the whole experience better, curiously once again.
O My Tidy Sum / I didn't like this loop for the beat - I have nothing against the idea though - but I got used to it and as I think the voice is particularly great on this one, now it's ok.
Rabbits / cool version all in all for me, I like the atmosphere of the "synthetic chord background"(I'm not talkng about the main instruments)... it wasn't obvious I'd accept all this because I really adore the original version, just with guitar and voice / screaming. But this one is great too, I believe.
Wheels / I like it, as it was the first track I heard of the album I guess I'll always do but I don't care that much now. I think it's quite nice though, due to the tempo, the energy of the track. A good transition with what's next, in my mind.
Dead Man's Curve / A bit like for Rabbits, except from the first listening to now I loved it. I take it as a vision of the song at a given time, who knows maybe a rawer version will appear on a Shoarma album or whatever...
Corrina / Ok but not "wow". I guess I could have loved this, done by Pixies(and weirdly I would define myself more as a Charles Thompson / Frank Black / Black Francis fan), or with different arrangements. Just my lame two cents but I believe with a way sharper sound(especially on the guitar) the song would have better been done justice to.
Six-Legged Man / YES! Some might say it's an easy one, using the magical Black Francis songwriting method on a quite repetitive mode but I feel it works, the keyboards are bringing a lot in my opinion, but everything's great here from my point of view. One of my favorites for sure.
Wild Son / Not to underestimate in my opinion, a bit discreet compared to some others but the value I find in it can appear with more listenings(just of the song or the whole record). Contrary to many Nashville recordings - it's just my own experience - I feel better that there is some soul in it, I liked some of the lyrics I could understand(sorry I'm a poor French guy), it's amazing it works!
When I Go Down On You / Could have been a great opener but I think it's a clever choice to put that one here. I think this track is incredible, has everything, not to mention all the technical aspects from passion to ambition, it's really a pleasure for me to hear that and to think it is Black Francis, now, doing what he wants. I love the lyrics, the sound, the music. One of my favorites too.
Non Stop Erotic / The first listenings were quite strange for me, but I got over it and I take it as a really intense, passionate and intimate song, with a haunting atmosphere. A success all in all, though at first I didn't feel quite well about it(and still, I always understood the quality of the recording by my own standards).
Cinema Star / Epic closer. I love the song's structure, my favorite part is the finale but everything before is incredible in my opinion. One of my favorites, if not the favorite on this album.
Taint No Use / Just really great, I love that.
Rocket USA / INCREDIBLE!
The Grindsman / At first was my favorite of the bonus tracks, I still like it but a bit less compared to the others I guess. But I really like it, I like the sound of the instruments, the whole performance and arrangements, and even if I don't know the original I suppose I love the composition...
(sorry it was longer than what I could have expected before writing...) |

When I Go Down On You plays as the first track on the BF.net jukebox. Wonder if it's a mistake or not.

well I got it, thanks Daisy
O My Tidy Sum, is my favorite, right behind Cinema Star. Wheels is good too, especially when you consider Frank's reason for covering it.
glad I payed for the import, more is more.

There's a quote in an interview somewhere about it: i think the gist was, when he was producing art brut's record he kept trying to get them to do a good Wheels, but ultimately discovered that the obsession with that song was his, so he decided to record it for this record.

according to "balls" http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19719
"So then Frank Black played Los Angeles, Cactus, I Burn Today, then started telling a story about the drive there. "It doesn't take 3 hours to get here from where I stayed last night. It actually takes a lot longer." He related how his driver/roadie kept trying to pass an 18-wheeler on a narrow winding road while a particular song was playing on the radio, when Frank realized they were inviting disaster by trying to do that. He then played the song which was Wheels by The Flying Burrito Brothers. I wasn't aware of him performing this song before, but he seemed to know it pretty well and did a great job. He continued to refer back to this incident throughout the show."

Yeah, I'd it quite odd hearing Eddie performing 'Wheels'. |

I absolutely can not take the song Nonstoperotik seriously. Each time I hear it, I think of Russell Brand in Forgetting Sarah Marshall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFAYgnIqv9U |

There meant to be films made for each song, by Judy Jacobs (who did the films for the Doolittle tour) to coincide with a webcast of a gig performing the album. |

There is a DVD (original film made in 1920) that is synched to The Golem soundtrack - but there are also films made for NSE: see above Ziggy comment.

Hi, I'm an old member that rarely posts. I thought I'd chime in here. This album sounds more diverse than the last few solo records (I missed Golem, perhaps a mistake). I have yet to hear an album since 2003 that tops the final Catholics record, Show Me Your Tears, but it's a decent listen all the same :)
BTW: who ever won that battle for FB best lp: the orange folks or TOTY folks? haha |

The orange folks lose because they fight among themselves about whether it's orange or yellow. |
