i have no qualms with the mixing/production. sounds great in my car! i've grown to love every aspect of this album: the tracklisting, the lyrics, the songs themselves (of course).

I will transcribe the Q magazine review - the same edition has the top 100 front men of all time, and BF only makes the all important 95th position! However, Liam Gallagher is rated number 1, which gives more idea of the standard of the enterprise. The review of NSE is not quite as bad, though. it is by Andy Fyfe, and he gives NSE 3 stars out of 5:

'Charles Thompson's been getting some'

Anyone who doesn't fancy the image of Black Francis on the job should look away now. While sex has rarely been off Francis's agenda, on his 14th post-Pixies album it's mostly implied, even if the gruff, singer-songwriterly When I Go Down on You and gentle piano ballad title track suggest otherwise. Like most of his albums of the last decade, NSE covers all stylistic bases, from the crunchy rock of Six Legged Man to the gentler strum of O My Tidy Sum, with flashes of the Velvet Underground (Wheels) and spiky pub rock (Dead Man's Curve), though best of all is the final track, Cinema Star, an amalgam of everything else. Download suggestions: O My Tidy Sum, Wheels and Cinema Star

Apologies if this has been posted already - from NoRipcord (7 out of 10):

http://www.noripcord.com/reviews/music/black-francis/nonstoperotik

Let’s be honest, Black Francis isn’t that sexy, but he does write a lot about sex (usually the depraved, lustful, low-fantasy brand of sex) but sex none the less. His obsession with the topic can be traced back to the early days of the Pixies (I’ve Been Tired anyone?) but his latest in a remarkably long line of solo albums, NonStopErotik, is the most upfront about its subject matter. As you can tell by the charming title, NonStopErotik is primarily a sex album, but it’s less gross than you’d probably think. It’s more interested in the humanity, and even the spirituality of sex than the wild-dog fucking that dominate the Pixies discography.

Besides a somewhat out-of-place Flying Burrito Brothers cover, NonStopErotik is entirely without surprises; opener Lake of Sin adheres to the ‘Loud Quiet Loud’ blueprint Francis has spent his entire career patenting. It’s all serviceable of course, it’s clear that the songwriter has lost no steam over his now tri-decade career. Tracks like the southern-tinged Dead Man’s Curve, the Trompe le Monde-esque Six Legged Man, and the surprisingly tender When I Go Down on You scream like they fell out of the early 90s. He hits far more than he misses.

NonStopErotik aims to be a fast-paced, smutty guitar-rock album, and it hits that without any trouble. That of course counts for something, but it’s not necessarily a winning endorsement. The record ends up being a little inconsequential, it doesn’t have any obvious weakpoints per se, but this sound is so well-tred (admittedly by younger bands aiming to replicate exactly what Francis did) that you can’t help but get a little bored. All that being said, Black is still a hell of a lot more dedicated than his fellow alterna-rock artifacts, and it does take respectable amount of huevos to release such a sex-focused record at the venerable age of 45 – especially considering how much of a sex symbol Francis isn’t.

NonStopErotik lives and dies on your particular hunger for music like this in 2010. If you love what Francis has done over the span of his solo work, (and to a lesser extent, if you love the Pixies) you’ll find just enough in the album to merit a listen or two. If you only have a passing interest, it’s probably not worth your 45 minutes.

First time hearing it. Rabbits is... different. Too short, too pretty, too produced, but what a great surprise. Always loved the song, this version will need more listens.

Damn, this thing is fast, Six Legged Man is already on. First three songs are weird start for a FB/BF album. Sleepy one-two-three punch, when he usually frontloads his albums with the strongest material. Not sure these three won't be my favourites with time, but this slow start seems very deliberate.

Interesting how his choices for covers are always very simple songs, compared to the oddballs he normally writes. Wheels, Black Rider, Dirty Old Town, You can't break a heart and have it, I tend to expect being disappointed by the simplicity of the covers he chooses for his albums, maybe because I want the weird stuff on a Frank Black album. Not that his songs are always strange, but they usually have one or two twists, I guess. Not many twists on 'Wheels', as expected.

Start of Six Legged Man is a Pixies song. That megaphone sound transports me to Pixies mode every time. 'Don't cry that way', sang through that megaphone mic, would probably sound like a Pixies song.

Still disapointed 'The Water' isn't on this.

this is pretty much my first impression, too, velvety. after 2 weeks with it, though, i can honestly say it's one of my favorites. i can't rank FB albums in any traditional way, but i can say there are 2 tiers: S/T, TOTY, DITS, SMYT, NSE in the first, everything else in the second (well, i guess HC and FMRM are in a third).

Trust me, the first three will grow on you. I was initially apprehensive about the new Rabbits, and I didn't really get O My Tidy Sum - but now that I do, they're absolutely incredible, especially O My Tidy Sum which may be my favourite from the album. Also, Lake of Sin kids ass pretty hard once you get to know it.

WeeklySurge.com - Pod Picks for April 22, 2010.

"Six Legged Man" by Black Francis

What a perfect album title, because of course when ever you think "NonStopErotik" you think of Black Francis.
At this point I think we all need to accept the fact that we aren't going to get a new Pixies album anytime
soon...and you know what? That's OK. We have Charles Thompson aka Black Francis, aka Frank Black to fill
that void for us. "Six Legged Man" just takes up where the Pixies left off on 1991's "Trompe le Monde." It's
peppy, some spoken lyrics, some screamy lyrics and the best part...it clocks in at 2:47. I mean really, if you
can't get your point across in three minutes or less, you are trying too hard.

Something among the lines of

1. critiscism on FB because he (an older man) sings about sex is hypocrital, because sex is one of the main driving forces behind popculture
2. the production of EDF is both rough and tender
3. EDF played with the Pixies and the Catholics and this record takes element of both those bands.
4. BF has lot's of good years and records in front of him.

Nice Mark Prindle review (8/10):

Nonstoperotik - Essential Music & Marketing 2010

I think it's safe to say that nobody who has seen a recent photo of Charles "Black Francis" Thompson has come away from the experience thinking anything other than "I must make love to that man." He oozes sex from every pore of a physique that almost literally screams, "I look like a big floppy boob." But the time is now and your sensual prayers have been answered because Nonstoperotik is an entire album devoted to the act of special places!

You might consider Thompson quite the ding-dong for pulling a boner like this, but come on -- this is Black Francis. Would he (woody) commit a fallacy (phallus E.) like writing sex songs without decent riffs? Hell no! Besides, it's not like he's trying to keep Enos (key penis) on the air. That'd be nuts! (balls)

With uncomfortably intimate refrains like "When I go down on you, we'll be happy" and "I want to be inside of you all the way," you might expect that Mr. Francis has replaced his melodic pop-rock sound with tuff Ted Nugent sex-funk or hottt Madonna sex-dance -- and you'd be right! The whole album sounds like the Red Hot Chili Peppers produced by Justin Timberlake.

Ha ha! April 23rd Fool's!

To match its lyrical concerns, the album features lots of organs (har har!), as well as strings, piano, and both acoustic and electric guitar. The first three songs find Thompson in a particularly sensual, sexy and romantic mood that might throw listeners for a loop until they realize how well-written the songs are. After that, the album turns to "normal Black Francis fare," meaning everything from uptempo melodic rock and sweet pop to balladry, jazzy cool and Sonic Youth guitar action. The sexual Frankness (pun extremely intended) can be a bit icky, but musically it's the same clever and tuneful Black Francis you've loved since Pixies times. In fact, "Six Legged Man" might as well be called "Pix Legged Ies," it sounds so much like a Surfer Rosa song. (I love it though - and so might you!) (Lack of ditto for the title track though, a horrendous ballad that dig far enough into the songwriting dumpster to musically quote "Wonderful Tonight")

You know what stumbles my bum? The fact that Frank Black wasted time on those dull Americana records when he clearly hadn't lost a bit of his creative talent. It makes you wonder what amazing things Neurosis could be doing if they'd get off this "everything has to be slow" kick. Doesn't it? Doesn't this new Black Francis album make you wonder that about Neurosis?

And don't even get me STARTED on what this record makes you wonder about Hal Holbrook!

(hint: without the mustache, he looks a hell of a lot like Nathaniel Hawthorne)

That's the funny thing about this record. I absolutely love Wheels.
I just read a review in French that raved about Rabbits and hated 6 Legged Man. Blackolero loved O My Tidy Sum and didn't like Wild Son. I've yet to see 2 persons who have the same opinion on the album's tracks.
Don't know what that's supposed to mean though.
