| Interesting thoughts on NSE here........ I don't think it's that the version of 'Dead man's Curve' is that bad. It's more that the version on 'Christmass' is so good. That was my initial thought of NSE, that this version couldn't hold a candle to the previous one. The one on 'Christmass' has so much feeling and a rawness about it, I just love it. NSE has it's moments, but mostly a let down. 'Six legged man' is the highlight for me............. |

| UNDERRATED album. Love the soft back-to-back sequencing of "O My Tidy Sum" and "Rabbits". Both songs have a nice 60s "baroque pop" thing going on. Very Curt Boettcher, maybe a little Donovan. Then there's the rocking back-to-back sequencing of "Corrina" and "Six Legged Man", which are both great. |

wheels, dmc, corrina and 6 legged man are ALL rocking. i love the sequencing, too. album starts with eth 2 mellow songs and then just lets it rip for a long time. great record. it's like SMYT meets COR.

Six Legged Man came up on shuffle and prompted me to play the full album. I really hope the guitar / keyboard ending to Cinema Star shows up on some climactic segment of a film. Amazing. Also, did that Lost Me Love track ever surface? Another post had it down with Grindsman and Rocket USA as b-sides. |

| Aside from Lake of Sin and of course Cinema Star, I've never really been able to get into NSE. I am hoping his next project is more cohesive than NSE, Bluefinger, Svn Fngrs. A more rockin version of The Golem, in terms of overall theme, would be welcomed. |

"More cohesive" is an odd choice of words, since all of NSE, Bluefinger, and Svn Fngrs are written around one single motif each. Especially Bluefinger. What could be more cohesive than that?

Regardless of the album having an overall theme, to me the tracks sound a bit all over. Musically I don't hear a theme, whether I'm told there is one or not. That's what I'm talking about. Many of these songs could be on different albums from each other. Rabbits, Wheels and some others have been demoed and around for a bit, so I don't think they were all made at the same time, toward the same theme.
SVN FNGRS is the set which sounds the most cohesive to me, but ultimately there are a few duds. My favorite of his recent releases, regardless.
Tight Black Rubber and Test Pilot Blues for exmaple, don't sound like songs that are of a single motif to me, musically.

I think the Blue-fingers-NSE period was a good one. By comparison the new Pixies recordings are a complete and utter train wreck, the old saying too many cooks spoil the broth applies.
NSE though I've never really given it much of a listen, and I really enjoyed pumped that out on my iPod today on the way into town, I think it has some really good, well produced songs on it. I'd forgotten about Six Legged Man as well and how rocking that tune is. And all the rest. Vocals are a bit dodgy in places, I don't really think he has as good a vocal range anymore with the high notes. Other than that, solid tunes, unlike EP1 that is really commercial and just bland, and forced. Hope they don't make the same mistakes with the follow up Kim album if there is one. |

You are indeed very dramatic. Utter train wreck? Please.
As for NSE, I like plenty of songs on there, but it's not cohesive to me. With that album title, I was expecting more songs like Lake of Sin, on that wierd sexual miscreant vibe. What we got was a mix of several styles, that don't for me fit together well enough for a steady listen. I stop and start this album more than any of his others. |

I think the diversity (one person's "not cohesive" is my "diverse", which is fine) of NSE is one of its strongest and most memorable elements. Punk rock, piano ballads, and 60s-style pop all on the same album? I'll take it.

It is a wreck the new pixies come back is it now? How many years have they been trying to pull this together, then finally it happens and Kim has a change of heart half way through, so they patch up the recordings with some new bass and vocals from two guys and start punting them out as limited edition surprise release EPs with apparently not great production. The whole thing is just balls and I don't see why they can't just rerecord them with the new Kim, unless as it turns out they are not really gelling together as a band.
NSE is a bit random too, but there are/were no expectations from it. I don't really get the whole non stop erotik thing but as fas as a collection of songs I'd say it rates with SVN FNGRS. That did have some discernible structure or point to it, but at the end of the day who cares anyway as long as it sounds good.
I like Ding's shouty marchy style of vocals with FB but not on a Pixies album. the only person who is allowed to shout on a Pixies album is Mr Black Francis. |
