very good album, for second listening.
on 3rd listening the less perfect tracks "shines". I don't like "wheels" "six lagged man", and other mid-tracks. They are O.K., but O.K. is not enough. First 3 tracks and last 3 tracks are great. Maybe he should make albums with 6-7 tracks, like SVN FNGRS.
Dead man's curve - sad production, should keep the acoustic style, drums way too dominant, vocals not enough in front.
Songwriting is not as good as Der Golem, and when it's brilliant (DMC)production ruining the nuances.

I must disagree with you kotvana. I think the whole album is amazing especially the middle portion. He's mixing his old sounds with some new sounds, and to me it sounds like his recent albums(Bluefinger SVN FNGRS) when you listen all the way through. Also he keeps adding more instruments to his songs, of course it works because its frank.

Good job, Good album, I love it Frank, keep putting out these fresh tasty jams please!

yeah, i'm kind of tempted to throw SVN FNGRS into the tracklist somehow just to make it longer. but i've already fleshed SVN FNGRS out with bluefinger b-sides, the history song, abbabubba, and christmass studio tracks.

i'm missing Serious Curious and Get Away Oil (because i don't have them). but it goes like this:

1. the seus
2. garbage heap
3. half man
4. i sent away
5. svn fingrs
6. the tale of lonesome fetter
7. when they come to murder me
8. polly's into me
9. virginia reel
10. abbabubba
11. history song
12. do what you want
13. she's my way
14. demon girl
15. radio lizards
16. don't get me wrong

i guess i'll just get my hands on the NSE bonus tracks and tack them on at the end (AFTER ghost coming!).

I must also disagree with kotvana. I can't find many weak spots.... and the production on Dead Man's Curve is just fine, IMO. I don't know how the drums could be any quieter and still have it sound good.

If there's anything wrong with the mix of Dead Man's Curve, it's been compressed and limited too much, but every album in the world is that way nowadays. I thought the drums were a little washed out if anything. Less dynamic compression would probably have brought them out more. Of course that blame would fall on John Dent at Loud Mastering, rather than EDF or BF. Overall, it walks that fine line between too much and just right - I don't find it to be as big a problem on this one as most albums. Minor complaint. The world loves it apparently, so I'm in a minority methinks.

i am SO down with this album. from Lake of Sin to Cinema Star it's a brilliant and odd collection of songs. i'm pretty addicted to it!

wheels has grown on me like crazy. at first i thought it was sort of lame, nothing at all to send smoke signals about. now i absolutely love it. it kicks off the Rockin' Middle just perfectly.

can't wait to get me mitts on the bonus tracks!

Another positive review:

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/cd_reviews/article7091836.ece

From the UK newspaper Times

Black Francis: NonStopErotik

When Black Francis (then plain old Frank Black) supplied some guest vocals on a Gordon Gano solo album a few years back, Gano asked him to do the screaming thing. “What screaming thing?” asked Mr Black, who had apparently forgotten the desperate vocal style with which he fronted Pixies. The old band’s reunion fixed that. Now, reverting to his Pixies-era nom de guerre, Mr Francis is reconnecting with that aggressive weirdness of old. The scream is back (on Dead Man’s Curve) and so is the unexplained urgency (Six Legged Man), the brooding menace ready to leap out from strangely calm verses into scary choruses (Lake of Sin), the unique angular structures (Corrina) and the obsession with sex (When I Go Down on You). There may never be another Pixies album, but thankfully Black Francis is again drawing from the same creative well.

right there with you, johnny! i've really been digging LoS the past couple days. the lyrics are... dirty.

the first 3 tracks initially threw off the whole experience for me. LoS was fine, but putting 2 mellow songs at the 2 and 3 spots made it tough to take in as an album for some reason. now i very much dig the track order. completely unique in the FBF catalog.

Been listening to the album for a few days now, and I really like it! Every song is good, and there's a nice mix of loud and softer songs. There's something so endearing about Frank's high singing. Makes me smile! My fave songs are Nonstoperotik, and Oh My Tidy Sum.

Only complaint is that Dead Mans Curve is a slight let down after hearing some really great live performances of the song. But that's a bit of an unfair criticism.

2010 marks a a bit of a watershed for me. The first time I've fallen more for the Quiet-Quiet-Quiet songs. That goes for The Golem too. I've always liked them but never as much as this.

I still reckon NSE's sound was intended, not badly mixed. Reminds me a lot of Throwing Muses' debut album. Gary Smith who produced it (as well as Come On Pilgrim) said he and the Muses had agreed to aim for a sound where the rhythm was felt not heard. I can't so much hear precisely the guitar on say, Six Legged Man, but I sure as hell feel it.

had to buy this album off of itunes since no store in australia has it, well ive looked in like 10 at least!

so i got the bonus track, not bad, kinda reminds of virgina reel

i think this album is great. It is though mixed in a way where you really wont feel the delights of it unless you play it at high volume.
try it, youll notice the difference.

While i agree that dead mans curve sounds better in the acoustic live form, he has already released it that way on christmass, so why do it that way again?

although i really wish he included the "darlings" on the album version. doesnt feel right without them

my fave songs are:

o my tidy sum, rabbits, six legged man, corrina, when i go down on you and cinema star.

and yes cinema star is as great as everyone says

instant classic. Superb lyrics and vocal delivery and shifts patterns effortlessly

nice album
