Stunning! The NME gives the album 8/10! What's happened, did they mix him with another guy called Black Francis who's 20 and rips off every 60s band and has it produced by Xenomania?

http://www.cookingvinyl.com/press/Black+Francis/NME_3April10.JPG.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=1

There's a bunch of reviews on the CV site:
- Daily Mail: 3/5 (includes Nirvana reference)
- Daily Mirror: 3 (out of 5 I guess)
- The Fly: 4 (out of ?)
- The Sun: 4 (out of ?)
- And an interview from Uncut which is mainly about porn flicks, and has 2 great quotes that I paste here:

"- Does the road to excess leads to the palace of wisdom?
- Yeah, I do think that is true, but probably not in the way most people might think. If you go down that road you're gonna think, 'Jesus, what the fuck have I done to myself?' You arrive at the wisdom of knowing most of the stuff on the road was a pretty fucking bad idea.

- Finally, why do you hate being reminded about Kurt Cobain's remark that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was his attempt to write a Pixies song?
- Because every fucker asks that question, and at this point I am almost bitter about it. That has nothing to do with him. It is just sort of insulting, though, that all I will probably be remembered for is that fact that a very famous dude casually dropped my name in an interview. That this is as good as it will get for me, that I will always be subservient to that remark."

It's VERY direct. Back to Show me your tears / Black Letter Days style.
Now why does it put you off? That song is so emotional I cant pay attention to the structure, it's just like a big fall. You cant even say if it's sad or happy. For some reason (but not a musical one) it makes me think to "When Will Happiness Find Me Again?". Maybe it's an answer to it (=Now!)

Something else: I made a nice experiment that I want to recomand! Just listen to Wild Son again and again (with the repeat option) as a backround. It just flows!

I don't dislike 'When I Go Down On You', I suppose. It's frustrating hearing a song that sounds like it was recorded through soup.

I agree that is the crucial thing about the song. That makes it a good song, that makes it a well sung song. Not about sad, not about happy, about everything. Saucers for ashtrays.

today I listened for the first time NSE, I think it will grow in me after a several times, the highlights for me are Corrina, Six Legend Man and Rocket Usa, the version of Deadīs Man Curve dissapointed me, for me doesnīt have the "balls" that BF gives in the live version, maybe lack of a stronger bass or drums....mmmm better Iīll listen again...

I think feilds of gold is probably the best.

I always thought farewell bend should of been the end of black letter days.

I have to disagree. If you listen to the 2003 show at Slims (the one which starts with FB+EDF acoustic), Farewell Bend is used to introduce the band after the "precore". Starts with FB acoustic and then the lead guitar (was that Rich or Dave?) comes on stage and does that great solo. Then when the song ends they segues into Where Is My Mind. Amazing opening.

I think this one will be a grower on the highest order. I really love it already, but, like all good FBF records, it's a subconscious little worm that keeps burrowing around in my brain while I carry out my daily activities that do not include listening to music.

@ motorscutor ---> I almost always disagree with pitchfork reviews. I'm usually suspect if they give something a GOOD review. Honestly though, most people just don't get FBF, even if they think they get the Pixies. I don't see the disconnect, myself. I've ranted about it before on other threads. I have to say though, I couldn't handle this album if it didn't include the louder songs. They work great in the context of the album, IMO. I read a review somewhere that calls the album a "rollercoaster," and that's dead on, in a good way. I think the sequencing is perfect, except I still can't dig the chorus of Lake of Sin. I do feel, that as a listening experience, it is much better than The Golem. But the Golem is much much much more rewarding. And it's like apples and oranges as far as subject matter.

Ayerigvlagabriga-Raraaaargh!-Rumbahl-Jumbahl!

i think for the most part that you have to listen to his albums for a while before you can give a proper review. listen to it 5 or 6 times then put it down for 6 months. "it works!"

I hope you're talking about pitchfork and not me, 'cause advice like that on this board is like going to a Mac forum and saying 'OSX is better than Vista'...

Ayerigvlagabriga-Raraaaargh!-Rumbahl-Jumbahl!

I was talking to everyone including myself. i used to skip brick is red for years on surfer rosa. (among other great songs) now it's one of my favorite songs. I was extremely disappointed in him covering changing of the guards. thought it was a boring song. then 5 years later it's one of the only songs i put constantly on repeat. I feel like 9 times out of 10 with charles, if you don't like it then you just need to wait. cuz eventually you will. of course with exception. :)

it is a little obvious. and i like farewell bend as intro to a show even more. our band covers just a little (the beau brummels) "I can't stay..." and we would either end the show with that or start with it. but usually we started with it.

I didn't mean to imply that it puts me off. When the song titles were announced, I thought it was great while a lot of others seemed seriously worried. Now, had someone shown me the lyrics before I heard it, I might've raised an eyebrow, but somehow the music makes it all right. Mostly it's reviewers who're surprising me. I expected a lot more of them to harp on how base the subject matter is.

I'm surprised there is no theme Golem vs Erotic yet.
I think they complete quite well actually. If NSE is a bit fat, Golem is just meat and bones. They should be a double album!!

Jose Jones: this is what I mean by 'vendetta'

Maybe the wrong word, but you'd have to be a cocks-smoke with a bone to pick to write/compile a review like this.

Ayerigvlagabriga-Raraaaargh!-Rumbahl-Jumbahl!

perhaps. at the same time, these reviews make me question if the reviewers have actually heard the pixies. they're all saying it sounds like the pixies, or it's trying and failing to sound like the pixies. maybe they're just not listening to the album. either way, they can fuck off.

after repeated listens the album has grown on me to the point where i really like/love every song. it helped that some just got stuck in my head.

i really enjoy the sex parts, not because i'm a horny young man but because his immense love and infatuation with his wife is front and center. his love of bonesing it up with her would not be as great if he didn't love her so much, this woman who is his wife, friend, and mother of his children. i can totally relate to that.

the only problem with the album is that it's 11 songs too short. more, please.

Yeah it's strange how people and critics get a bit fussy about that sexual content, while the pixies early lyrics were a lot more explicit. Anyway, a song is not a real person. I just listen to the songs, I dont know and dont want to know Charles and Violet. It sounds like a tabloid thing to me that way of thinking to artists as REAL people and trying to understand them with some kinda first grade psychology (dont mean to be offensive to anyone there).

I'm not really digging this album.

I like the obvious, dead man's curve, when I go down on you, rabbits.

The rest of the album I find pretty tired. I do like the key boards though.

I think the reason the sex (personally I think it's pretty tame, and certainly delivered innocently) is getting so much attention in the reviews is because a) the album's called nonstoperotik, b) charles released that eyebrow raising write-up about it, c) he's an overweight, middle-aged, family man. If Justin Timberlake or Brittney Spears or someone like that release a song about "going down on you", no one would care and 4th graders would be singing it on the school bus.
