"You know, I read a disparaging review that questioned whether someone wants to listen to old Frank Black singing about vaginas or whatever. I understand the point, but really the record is not meant to be a sexual appendage to your own experiences. It’s not meant to be a record you make love or masturbate to. I wouldn’t masturbate to a recording of my own voice either! "

so the guy at The Skinny doesn't like the new album. that's fine. he obviously has an appreciation for frank's solo work in general. coastline doesn't like FMRM. i don't think coasty has a vendetta against frank because of it.

this seems pretty cool (from the Rolling Stone interview)...
Any plans to do a solo tour? I don’t have anything on the books yet. I’m working something out with this film company and we’re trying to do a simulcast with a Q&A and a band performance. It’ll be a performance of the record with these little films and then a Q&A. We’re still working on that, though.

There's another track too: "Lost Me Love" - but I don't know exactly what that is on. Could just be a digital track?

A three star review in Record Collector:
http://www.recordcollectormag.com/reviews/review-detail/5380
Frank’s sex album. Gulp…
The Pixies are everywhere again nowadays, thanks to the whole reformation tour thing, and even the classic-album-in-full thing (last year’s Doolittle mini-tour). But they, and singer Frank Black (Francis) particularly, have never been, well, obvious. Until now…
The premise is that this is his “sex album”, and the promo material even includes a selfpenned penile/vaginal eulogy that’s difficult stomach. But, hey ho, if approached with an open mind, there’s some great work here. Lake Of Sin rattles away at the start like a secondary something off Bossanova, before the fabulous melody of O My Tidy Sum reminds you that this man can write a song. Six Legged Man gets even Pixier still, but the more sultry numbers let the side down.
Whether or not you need to hear When I Go Down On You, sung in Black’s now increasingly screechy voice, is a decision for yourself and yourself only. The title track seems forced, nowhere near as deftly played as material on 2005’s Honeycomb. And a Flying Burrito Brothers cover (Wheels) is inessential, if earnest. So does this hit the spot? Only like an average lover.

I love what I've heard of the album (and the title track really seems to appeal more and more after a few listens). I'm not sure of the 'increasingly screechy voice' comment. A bit clumsy and inaccurate, to say the least. Seems on fine voice throughout the record! But I suppose it's to be expected that someone aged 44, even looking after their voice, will sound different to even a decade ago. |

Fun stuff. I disagree with about everything the Record Collector guy wrote. Lake of Sin and Tidy Sum are the weakest of the album and When I Go Down is great. Honeycomb sucks. And the Doolittle "mini-tour" has lasted for about a year now. Oh well, to each his own.

To be fair, Tidy Sum has grown on me. It's just that it reminds me a bit of Grand Duchy, and I don't like GD very much.

Well maybe not many people will agree that they're the strongest tracks but they're intriguing. Mysterious, all the more for EDF's faint accompaniment. I'm starting to think the way they've presented the songs this time is a lot smarter than I first thought.

The intro to 'Lake of Sin' is fabulous. Gives the goosebumps just like 'Captain Pasty'.
It's weird how many reviewers still bang on about how much they like 'Honeycomb'. |

To be fair, the reviewer above was talking specifically about the musicianship. Even if Nashville Frank isn't your cup of tea, those players were damn good.

I like the playing on FMRM but not that much on HC. To me on Honeycomb the guys sound like session players, whereas on FMRM they really seem to be having fun and put their heart in it. There are some exceptions. The title track on HC is really good.

Apologies if Carl has already posted this.
http://thequietus.com/articles/03975-black-francis-nonstoperotik-album-review
I'm finding it tough to make sense of this review and there are a few dodgy references in there but from the sentence below I'm guessing it's somewhat positive...
Frank Black has finally turned in the greatest number of memorable tunes ever amassed on a FB/BF release; NonStopErotik deserves to turn heads...

I stopped at, "This melodiously bullet-proof songcraft plain begs to be disfigured into inverted forms, Pixies-style."
I can't figure out if he wanted plainly, plane, and/or is just a poser. |

Jeez. Listen to the second half of My Life Is In Storage and tell me you don't think those guys are amazing. Steve Cropper's solo* to close the song is one of the most beautiful things in all of Frank's catalog. It makes me cry like a baby.

A fair chunk of FMRM was recorded during the Honeycomb sessions - and all was Produced by one J Tiven. I think it is fairly obvious that is the case, it is a one-two punch. Not a particularly good one in some people's eyes, but one nevertheless.
All those songs have a post-SMYT break-up life-in-ruins feel to them imo > followed by XMASS rebuilding > then the Bluefinger explosion of a rebirth.

I wasn't sure about my ability to get away from work Tuesday and purchase NSE from one of my local music purveyors, so I ponied up for Amazon's advance purchase, which for an extra shipping fee promises delivery on Tuesday... guess I'll see if it really makes it here on Tuesday.
Excited about this... aside from a couple of tracks I've been closing my ears to the leaked music so I can hear most of it as album. Not as excited as I was about the Golem, but still excited about the new album and the prospect of live shows. |

Regarding "My Life Is In Storage" - that one was sort of getting the skip treatment from me until I heard him do it solo acoustic on a radio show. The way he did the ending just sucked me right in and made me give it another listen. It's totally different from the studio but has the same impact - a great coda!
It was on Minnesota Public Radio. I tried to find it on the internets to provide a link but can't come up with it - I have the MP3 file though
