Who here believes intelligence is genetic?
I do for one.
Therefore, if you group a bunch of genes (be it by race or head size), one group is bound to have more intelligence than another. However, this could simply be by natural variation and if you did it a couple of years later the reverse may well be true (indicating your categorisation was not correlated to intelligence).
Nonetheless, I would argue for the scientist's right to propose such a hypothesis and try and to prove it. It is not a ridiculous theory. Nor is one which says "white people are stupider"..
It is one however if proven true may cause problems for us socially.
Are Black people faster than white people?
There are some studies that say they are.
From a genetic point of view, their is no difference between one trait (say intelligence) and another (say muscle size). They are both selected for in different environments.
It is just society at the moment that places a high value on intelligence at the moment.

It may or may not. There is not much evidence to support it (as such). But studies at this level are difficult because of the social factor (which is hard to keep constant).
My point being if it was correlated with race, it is not such a important or dangerous thing. Intelligence is only one trait. We seem to hold it above others (only at present). 6000 years ago having big muscles was the thing (actually in some environments, having big muscles still seems to give you an advantage with the girls - speaking not as a pacifist by nature but as a pacifist by physique).
Genetically speaking diversity is a good thing (as important gene combinations can be lost otherwise). |

I think if there are any supposed lower intelligence issues associated with blacks or the possibility that many are not the best employees - as suggested by that geneticist - it's because of the environment they were brought up and continue to live in.

No, I think he is saying that race has something to do with genetics and so does intelligence but that there is no correlation.
E.g. big noses are genetic and so is skin colour. That does not mean big noses and skin colour have a correlation. Big noses are most likely equally prevalent within races. |

Indeed true and that probably is the difference if there is one. However, any true test (from a scientific stance) must try and neutralise this (nature v nurture). IQ tests do to some limited degree.

I read a very tedious book this summer that had an entire chapter dedicated to George H. W. Bush and race hygiene. It was the best chapter in the book.

Intelligence is subjective. Creativity, for example, has nothing to do with, say, mechanical perception. And there are some people who are intelligent who don't like to engage in deep thinking.
Come to think of it, race is pretty subjective, too. Within ethnic groups most genetic variations come. The SLC24A5 gene only accounts for about 1/3 or 1/4 of your skin color. Though I'd be lying if I said that there aren't some people who are unmistakably black, the line is not well-drawn. |

I don't believe that any race or group of people is genetically smarter than another. I believe that basically all people start out the same. I think it's a question of culture and values. If we compared Frank Black fans with, say, 50 Cent fans we'd see a big difference in values.
For instance, I'd rather impress people by doing really well at a game of Trivial Pursuit than by having expensive, shiny hubcaps. I think most people on this forum feel the same way, but I think it would be the opposite on The 50 Cent Forum.

Also, I disagree. Based on empirical evidence, fans of Fiddy are Ivy League co-eds who'd give you a run for your money on Trivial Pursuit and who wouldn't be caught dead in anything blingy. Which brings me back to your very correct point -- one shouldn't generalize.

All people do not start out the same. Some people have genetic brain disorders, some people will never reach the same level of intelligence (i take your point that there are different kinds of intelligence etc) of other people (because of their genetic disposition).
And just cos i mention genetic disorders etc (does not mean you can say "oh, well i meant normal people"). They are as normal in the sense that there is statistically meant to be x% of these per population.
On the subject of spirituality etc. it does not mean that when you look for a scientific explanation for something (you're an atheist). I tend to agree with Gould's Nonoverlapping magisteria.
