Whiny self-important pianist who obsessively covers other people's songs or one of our times' best, most thought-provoking and overlooked singer/songwriters?

Loved loved loved her first two albums. But she lost me after that, when she started singing directly to girls. She's still really hot, though. I swear I've seen her have an orgasm, fucking her piano bench onstage.

My fave Tori lyric: "With their nine-inch nails and little fascist panties tucked inside the heart of every nice girrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrl." Frank never wrote a line with that much teeth.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

I used to really like Kate Bush but when she went MIA, a lot of people (myself included) picked up on Tori Amos. I like her first album, but the appeal wore thin quite quickly and I really can’t be bothered listening to her more recent stuff.

For those who don’t know already she was also in a heavy metal band that released one album which bombed. It was after this that she went solo, changed her name and moved to London.

If you are a fan, I am sure that you won’t like reading Mark Prindle’s reviews of her albums. He really drags her over the hot coals.

Nick Cave's comment - Green eyes and a twinkling cunt. That was funny. I have also seen her fucking her piano bench onstage. Might work in New York but a London crowd, well...

First to albums and Song From The Choirgirl Hotel are great, don;t really know much of her other stuff.

Oh yeah, she may never have been a Cornflake Girl, but she was a Just Right girl:

I like her first few albums a lot, although I don't find myself listening to them much anymore. I did have "Past The Mission" come up on random this morning, and I remembered that it's a great song. I've only listened to her most recent album a few times, but I think it's a clear improvement over her last two, which were pretty mellow and adult-alternative-sounding.

I don't think she humps piano benches anymore, for what it's worth. She seems to have worn herself out in her early years, and grown old before her time. She's still batshit crazy in other respects, though.

I love her. Her music has gotten more kickass as she's gotten older. Plus, her subject matter is more compelling since she worked thru her "I was a teenager in a Christian environment" issues and since she stopped writing about gender politics.

coasty, an even sharper line from Precious Things is, "So you can make me cum, that doesn't make you Jesus."

Not to be contrarian, but I've often been struck by how she sings the word "Jesus."

I liked her when she was on Divorce Court. Either that or the Special K corn flakes commercial. All down hill from there.

It's cool she eventually got on with her own thing I suppose. But, she always reminded me of one of those girls in high school who was way into astrology, fairies and butterflies. There's a sort of unsettling vacuousness about her. She can play though.

She can indeed play, HJ. Here's a cool vid of her playing the piano and the harpsichord at the same time -- all the while singing. And fucking the piano bench. And being hot. Sometimes I forget how much I like Tori.

I like her stuff. sure.

before any of you guys use the word "cunt" or "fucking" when talking about tori amos, you should know she was raped by a dude who gave her a ride home after a show many years ago. it explains a lot of the angst in her lyrics.

As if she's some sort of meek little pixie because she was raped? Far from it. Tori owns her sexuality, and it's a huge part of her performing persona. It's the most impressive thing about her.

Ew. Must we delve into heavy stuff? This is what I meant earlier about preferring her post-gender politics stuff.

she's gone political? i haven't heard any of her new stuff; i'll have to check it out.

she definitely owns her sexuality or whatever. indeed, i would never call her meek...right...but you can't deny that such an experience--her being raped--does command a little more respect, all the while giving us further insight on her view of the world, which is significant for any artist to possess, own, cultivate, explore, share and ... yes ... ravish

but seriously, Kathryn, I'm going to the CD store after work to pick up the new Iron & Wine ... tell me more about her new politcal stuff...it sounds like it could be really good.

TORI AMOS SELLS CONCERT BOOTLEGS TO FANS
Writer: Jeremy Goldmeier
News, Published online on 17 Oct 2007

Tori Amos, come on down! You're the next contestant on "Direct to
Consumer Tactics!"

The songwriter will make several live sets from her current American
Doll Posse tour available for fans to download via her Legs & Boots
website
. The first show, Amos' Monday evening set at
Philadelphia's Tower Theater, is already up for consumption. The
material comes either as 256k mp3s (take that, Radiohead!) at
$9.99 or super hi-res FLAC files for $14.99. The mp3s will go up a
few hours after each show, while the FLAC versions will pop up 4-6
days after that. Those who purchase the FLAC package will receive
mp3 files to enjoy during the added wait time.

This move, of course, is not without precedent. Pearl Jam long ago
made a business of bootlegging, while the Pixies offered similar
"instant live" packages of their reunion tour concerts. Amos herself,
meanwhile, offered double-CD bootlegs for six separate shows back
in 2005.

Still, given the current record industry climate, every little move an
artist makes toward independence these days will be more carefully
scrutinized than ever before.

See Tori's tour schedule here.

Never really cared about her. There's something that I don't like in her music, her voice, but I don't know what precisely.

I was at the show at the Tower. Not sure if I want to buy the bootleg, though. I'm not generally one for listening to recordings of entire concerts.
