Sounded great. Very stripped down with a single guitar, bass and drums.

Very interesting. Wonder if FB will dig out the Telecasters for some shows.

I thought it was kind of strange seeing FB perform without playing a guitar. I was there during sound check as well and I noticed he was just singing without a guitar, but I didn't think anything of it at the time. He definitely has moved past the Nashville era like it was just a phase he was going through. This could be the most raw, high energy FB show I've seen. I'm assuming all the unfamiliar songs are on the new album, and they all sounded pretty damn good.

On a side note, to add to Brian's Larry Norman revelation, if that name sounds familiar, see Six-Sixty-Six. That's probably a "no sh*t Dick Tracy", but thought I'd mention it.

Oh dear. I'm gonna burst if I miss this tour. Are you all being serious or is this some kind of elaborate joke? This setlist is unreal. Looks like my own FB best-of.

I just wanted to say "tmesis." I'm a nerd like that. Anyway, does somebody else here have "awe-fuckin-some" patented for forum use?

P.S. My apologies for going off-topic. Threads like this should be about the music. Frank, can you use tmesis in a song, please, to bring me back on topic?

I didn't eat any pizza the other night but I've had it before. It's good but I think it may be a bit over-priced. The beer was reasonably priced and that's what I was focused on.

The pizza wasn't bad, but even in little ol' Salem, you can do better. But in the same breath, I live and die by the mantra "pizza's pizza".

As I was reviewing the pictures I had taken Saturday night, I remembered something kind of funny that happened during soundcheck. The guy at the sound board yelled "Charles", and after both of them responded, Charles Normal said something like "I can already see this is gonna cause a problem". I've uploaded the pictures that aren't awful. I'll post a message when they're up. Brian, you'll appriciate one of the shots which prominently features the back of your head.

While you wait for pictures of the back of OMBrian's head, fbc, check out this old live-show thread from last year: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16738

One of the great show reports ever, including some pre-show planning that had me wanting to sell my Frank Black collection and just go to Nashville. I was looking at this thread the other day, and it just got me pumped for FB all over again. Except who knows when I'll see him again. But I hope I see him with OldManInACoffeeCan when I do.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Ahh, good times.

Thanks for that, Coastline, I forgot about that one completely. I need to look back over old threads more often.

OMIACC's a legend. I miss him. And Kelly needs free tickets to most shows so she can send me cool pictures of six strings.

Any word Obiter on the live recordings? Were you able to record the show?

Thanks to OMBrian and Nate for all your reviews. You made me feel like I was there.

My wife grabbed a set list off of the stage. Here it is:

The Black Rider
Old Black Dawning
Thalassocrasy
Captain Pasty
Tight Black Rubber
Your Mouth to Mine
Los Angeles
California Bound
Abstract Plain
All My Ghosts
Freedom Rock
Massif Centrale
Ten Percenter
Re-make/Re-model
Robert Onion
Threshold Apprehension
Lolita
You Can’t Break A Heart and Have It
Manitoba
The Rockafeller Skank

Frank skipped Abstract Plain because he was having some problems hitting high notes that night. They played Lolita twice because Frank skipped an entire verse and he wanted to do it correctly. Frank apologized and said this would be a good time to use the restroom if you didn’t want to here the song again.

We originally grabbed a different set list that had crib notes for Charles Normal for each song. When we were talking to him he said he needed the notes on our set list and he got us different one.

Frank had a lot of good audience banter. At the beginning of the show he told everyone that cell phone use was OK during his show.

At one point someone in the audience was shouting out a request to him and he replied
“I can’t hear a word your saying, I’m completely deaf. I can see your mouth moving, and I appreciate that, but I’m completely deaf.”

We got to talk to the band a bit after the show. Ding, the bass player played with PJ Harvey for a time.

If I had to describe this show in one word it would be surreal (or sur-fuckin’-real). To see Frank Black in such a small place was incredible. In addition, most people stayed off of the dance floor so the was no crush of people in front. My wife and I put our pitcher of micro IPA and glasses on one of the two small tables that were placed in front of the stage and rocked out.

Did I mention this show kicked ass?

I took some pretty good pictures, which I will upload soon.

From what I saw, Normal is a very capable guitarist, a straight-ahead punk rock mentality. Rough and raw and solid, competent. (I can't imagine how daunting it is to take the stage with FB. Hats off to all these lads for taking care of business.) It was a noisy show, more so than you would think upon hearing it was 'only' guitar/bass/drums. FB's voice of course had a lot to do with that result.

This noisy, energetic band as a whole feels to me like a very obvious step away from Nashville, and from all the years when there was a steel guitar on stage with Frank. (Steel guitar as signifier... at least since DITS days.) The band last fall gave a very different sound -- yeah, of course it rocked, but it was smoothed, leavened somewhat, by the steady Nashville hands of the supporting players. These young fellers have a different sensibility altogether, a balls-out cutting loose, or at least that's the impression I got from the Lefty's show. FB/Charles (Abnormal?) is making some kind of point here, or was with this one show.

In fact, I'm having trouble reconciling the fantastic rock show I saw on Saturday with the Bluefinger album tracks that I've heard, aside from Threshold. It would make more sense to me if the upcoming record were like 'Frank Black & the Catholics,' that fever dream of power guitars. One man's opinion, anyway.

Eager to hear what you guys in Europe see and think when this tour rolls through, and how the sound evolves as they play more and more shows. Very promising start!

Won't it be hard for record stores, if there's one section for Black Francis, and another for Frank Black?

I can't believe I was an hour away and didn't go to the show.

I even got the green light from my folks to go, but my wife and I were too exhausted from our first plane flight with a child to even consider it.

On the plus side, Eugene is beautiful, and I can see why people would want to live there. And I got to go to Cafe Yumm, which is currently only in Eugene I think, but should be franchising to a city near you in the future. Yummy indeed. They served Full City coffee.

You're right coastline, Full City is indeed a very fine cup o' joe!. Thanks for the tip.
