I'm not sure how this has managed to stay under the radar with only two and a half weeks left until the show. It appears this would be his warm-up for the European tour.
My seats are already reserved. I really love the fact that my all time favorite musician now lives in Oregon and this will be the third time in about 9 months that I've seen him, in the 3 smallest venues I've ever seen him play. |

I hate you. And I can't even plan a "business trip" in Oregon, I have no business there. Unless... |

I've never had their pizza. I didn't even know it was a pizza joint. I only knew of the place by the name Lefty's. The pizzeria part had always been left off whenever I heard stories about the place. I do plan on testing their pizza and selection of brew the night of the show. I am also planning on taking my camera. Hopefully I can get some good shots. The place is really small, but it might be a little dark. |

Yeah, I'll check if I can find a prospective customer in Salem. With my points I can go to Winnipeg easily so that's another possibility. |

Dude, sfakajones, thanks a million for posting this. I just snagged a ticket for this show, two weeks hence. Fantastic.
I was just lamenting how miserable it will be to wait for this next FB tour to come here, given the long schedule in Europe. How selfish of me! I saw the man three times (Olympia, Seattle, Portland) at the end of '06, so I should have been very satisfied. But I lamented anyway. And look, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, in the form of a warmup show down the road in Salem! Good times.
Thanks, sfakajones. Thanks! See you there. |

Anybody heading to the Salem show from Portland who needs a ride, I'd be happy to give you a lift. One or two passengers. I'll be flying solo otherwise, and it would be nice to have company for the ride home after the show.
Cheers. Nate |

Just as an FYI to anyone, since there's not a lot of info on the Lefty's website, tickets are 18 bucks, and it's reserved seating. Only around 200-person capacity, so it's going to be very intimate. Can't wait! |

Damn, I'm going to be in Eugene that day, visiting my parents so they can see their grandson. I'm trying to convince my wife that it would be great bonding to let the boy bond with his grandparents while we go on a date to see Frank Black in Salem, but so far she's not going for it...

That's a tough one, Jeff. My road trip prospects are so limited with the little one at home that this Salem show is a godsend. God bless my wife. |

When I booked the ticket, I believe the nice person mentioned something about an opening act, but frankly I don't recall. I was delirious at the notion of just hearing about and immediately getting a ticket for a Frank show two weeks away. Still am!
I am starting to wonder whether the man might make an appearance at Sasquatch, which is happening the same weekend as this Salem show. Somebody mentioned Sasquatch on another thread, and I don't want to start a rumor, but how cool would that be? Very, very cool. |

I might just cry; this is the 2nd time Frank has played a tiny venue in my town & I will miss it again. I'm leaving town for my first vacation in 3 years earlier that day. I am profoundly disappointed. |

Hi, Orbiter!
http://www.gazettetimes.com/articles/2007/05/25/entertainment/columnists/night_rider/tenpas.txt
Frank Black at Lefty’s Pizzeria & Blues Club
I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume I don’t have to tell you much about Frank Black. Just so that’s established, I know I don’t have to, but I want to tell you just a little bit, lest you miss a truly one-of-a- kind opportunity.
The artist formerly known as Black Francis formed The Pixies with Kim Deal of Breeders fame, Dave Lovering and Joey Santiago back in the mid-’80s and they proceeded to become underground rock heroes. Albums such as “Surfer Rosa,” “Come On Pilgrim” and “Doolittle” continue to be played by fans of alternative music or just plain rock and roll, and “Here Comes Your Man” is about as ubiquitous a song from the period as you’re likely to hear.
Although they broke up in 1993, they reunited in 2004 and played sold-out music halls all over the country, fulfilling a generation of fans’ wishes for nostalgic gratification.
Beginning in 1993, Black started releasing solo albums, starting with a self-titled album featuring the song “Los Angeles” that MTV’s “120 minutes” played the hell out of, burning it into my brain to this very day. Since then, Black has continued to release solo albums to critical acclaim, and on the verge of a forthcoming European tour in support of a career retrospective, he’s playing a “warm-up” show at Lefty’s in Salem on Saturday.
For those unfamiliar with and hence possibly leery of the term “warm-up” show, let me reassure you that such performances are often the best of the tour, as they’re the least predictable. As the band hasn’t quite decided what exactly it will do with its arrangements, or when and how it will improvise, the audience is treated to a unique rough mix of the coming tour. Last year I saw another great band, Secret Chiefs 3, on the warm-up night for its last tour, and not only was it a truly “dangerous” night of music in the best possible sense of that word, but it also provided a pretty amazing segue to the next segment of this column. Don’t you think? |

Oh man... I live in Portland, and Work in Salem. I would so incredibly be there if I weren't going to be at Sasquatch that night. I'm actually kind of eyeballing not going to Squatch, if this is going to be here. |

I got to Lefty's early and to my delight FB was doing sound check. With maybe a half dozen people I sat and watched the warmup for the warmup. Then they drifted out and I got a glimpse of dad Frank holding his little one. Priceless.
I didn't get a setlist, but they were definitely snatched up from the stage and will probably make their way here. I also missed out on the cool little show flyer which disappeared; hopefully somebody will scan it and put it up.
1. Frank didn't play guitar at all, the whole show. 2. He looks great, even slimmer than last fall. Healthy living, methinks. 3. Violet joined the band for the last handful of songs. Really great seeing them on stage together, like Johnny and June. 4. The new band were rough, raw and rocking. It's going to be a noisy tour.
He opened with a particularly vigorous 'The Black Rider' and just went nuts, even leaping off the stage and bouncing around on the floor (I was front and center and so was two feet away from screaming Frank. An electric thrill.) He may have overexerted himself on that one because soon after he complained that he had blown out his upper register, and even skipped a song on the setlist. But as always he soldiered on and just killed it.
What do I remember? Old Black Dawning, Los Angeles, All My Ghosts, Captain Pasty, Threshold Apprehension, jeez, he played a ton... best version of Manitoba I've ever heard, actually the first version I've really liked.
After some banter about how his kids love the hip-hop, he closed with that "Funk Soul Brother" song. This one THRASHED.
No encore, which reminded me that the first four or five times I saw FB, he didn't play encores, which I thought was awesome in an age when the encore is all but obligatory.
Good people of Europa, you're going to get your socks knocked off by this tour. |

I have a set list but I'm not swearing it's perfect. Anyone that was there is welcomed to point out a song I may have missed, incorrectly added or put out of order.
1. The Black Rider (Tom Waits cover) 2. Old Black Dawning 3. Tight Black Rubber 4. Captain Pasty 5. Los Angeles 6. California Bound 7. All My Ghosts 8. Freedom Rock 9. Massif Centrale 10. Ten Percenter 11. Re-Make/Re-Model (Roxy Music cover) 12. Threshold Apprehension 13. Lolita 14. You Can't Break A Heart And Have It 15. Manitoba 16. The Rockfeller Skank (Fatboy Slim cover)
As it's already been stated, Frank didn't play guitar in the show and Violet joined him right before "Threshold Apprehension" to sing backup through the end of the show.
A sign by the door said the capacity for Lefty's was 270. When I asked the lady at the front about tickets, she said there were some still available. How wrong is that? |

Most unexpected? Okay, I'll take that as a sign that it’s okay to blab some more.
A few more thoughts...
The venue Lefty's is a credit to quiet little Salem. This is a top-notch small venue. Apparently a heavy blues tilt to their booking, and I gather that they usually sell reserved seating without general admission. You sit, order food and drink, and enjoy the show. For FB last night, I dutifully sat in my assigned seat (terrific clear view, about 25 feet from the stage) upon arrival and through the opening act, but the floor in front of the stage was open. I asked if it was 'okay' to roam around out there and got a yes from the waitress and the fellow who I think is the tour manager. [Back story: After sitting during my first ever Pixies show, at all-seater Constitution Hall in DC, I vowed to never again be chained to a seat during an FB/BF/Pix show. Never again!] So when FB and the band came out for their set, I immediately made a beeline for the still-empty area in front of the stage. Stood respectfully back from the stage front to give the man some room, which was a good thing because of the aforementioned roaming about he did during 'Black Rider.' Eventually everyone else got hip to this and came down front.
The opening band were two Norwegian women who sang authentic folk songs or something, called (and I am not making this up) 'The Fjord Motor Company'. A dazzling display of cheekbones. One or both of them are in the band which opened for FB last fall in Portland (Wonder Ballroom), called something like 'Defenders of Metropolis.' Yet another in the parade of obscure, bizarre, challenging but not unenjoyable opening acts at FB shows over the years. A fellow with a handlebar mustache came on late in their set and played the saw. 'Nuff said.
I noticed during the sound check that FB's guitarist looked incredibly familiar, but couldn't place him. After seeing the Fjords I remembered that he was the guitarist in the Metropolis band. Maybe you guys all know this already, but it felt like I'd solved a puzzle. Charles Normal is the name.
The bass player was introduced as Ding and looked like he was auditioning for a movie about the Clash.
Did I mention that I loved the show?
One more from the vault: it occurred to me that this is the SECOND time I had the good fortune to catch a small-venue show before FB left for Europe. He played IOTA in Arlington, VA, before leaving for Europe, I think this was right before Dog in the Sand was released. Just him and Dave the guitarist, who was fairly new at that point. Tiny, tiny venue, completely packed. Midway through, I yelled out 'The Swimmer,' and not only did he acknowledge hearing the request, he seemed sort of impressed that someone knew the song, and he played it, telling Dave to sit this one out because he didn't know it yet.
Sorry for the rambling. Still very high from the show last night. Cheers. |

It was baffling that the place wasn't full. But it is a holiday weekend, there was virtually no press for this show (I heard from a local), and the Sasquatch festival probably distracted a lot of Portland folks who otherwise would have been there.
Lucky us, anyway, those of us who were there. |

To follow up on a point just made, Charles Normal is, indeed, the guitarist for Guards Of Metropolis. My understanding is that Frank's drummer for this tour is also from that group. The pair of them live in Salem, which would help explain why Frank decided to play here.
And, Nate, if you want to put one more piece to the puzzle, here's something that will help everything make a little more sense. Charles is the brother of Larry Norman, the Christian singer Frank is such a fan of. |
