Take that song, remove all the funky little noises in the original, insert angry guitar, speed it up a bit, turn up the volume to eleven, and substitute Frank's screaming for the vocals -- and say what you will, but the man's screaming has evolved just as his singing has evolved, into a finely tuned instrument -- and you'll get an idea of this cover version.
Not sure if the 6-year-old would love it as much, but once I figured out what he was doing, I really dug it. The band clearly enjoyed it as well. Very fun song to end with, and a perfect bookend to the fantastic Black Rider rock-out which opened. |

Wow! That sounds like a great show. I'm excited that the show was so rockin'. I hope the "Funk Soul Brother" cover makes a return appearance on the tour. Having abstained from any advance Bluefinger, all I can say is I hope the album is as exciting as a lot of forum members believe it to be.
I wonder if he'll drop the setlist as the tour goes on or at least derivate from it.
Anyway, thanks for the reviews! |

Considering that everyone playing on this tour has never played with Frank before, they'll probably work up a 15-20 song set and stick with that more or less.
There's still a few weeks before the tour starts though so maybe some songs will be added or subtracted from the warm-up date set. |

Sounds great! How was acting Frank without his guitar?
Can't way to see him in ... Massif Central!

It will be interesting to see how this band interprets some Nashville era songs, if they even bother. |

I would hope the new guys continue learning songs to augment and vary the setlist over the course of the tour. This is a great set, but variety is the spice of life, especially with a back catalog like FB's.
remig, he really acted like a rock'n'roll singer up there. Not just during the first song when he hopped down to the floor and screamed right at us. Lots of walking around stage with the mic in his hand, a bit more showmanship perhaps than we're accustomed to from him. Maybe it was just a playful night, or maybe he's decided to be a bit of a Rock Star. The effect was almost stunning, how engaging it was, the palpable energy. Like somehow he seemed more 'into it,' emoting a bit more than he could whilst strapped with guitar. I dunno.
Not Meat Loaf-level theatrics, mind you, but there's something cool about a singer singing, the voice as his sole instrument. Plus it was a new wrinkle from Mr. Thompson. Fun stuff all around. |

Hats off to him for the showmanship but I'm sure gonna miss his playing. For me it's one of the main attractions.

I have to see the untethered version of the man in concert! That just seems so odd to me. Completely unpredictable. |

After the show, I ran into a local musician I know named Mark Lemhouse. It's only been in the days since that I've seen a press release for "Bluefinger" saying that Mark is the producer on it. Anyway, his first question to me was whether I liked Frank with or without the guitar. I couldn't really say but I did like that there was a different side of him that was on display. The thing that occurred to me after I thought about it was how comfortable he was sans guitar. I know he's a seasoned veteran and everything but some people spend so much of their stage career holding a guitar that they don't know what to do without it. Frank didn't seem to have that problem. |

LOVE the photos.
There's something very punk rock about the simple 4-person singer/one guitarist/bassist/drummer band line-up. Black Flag, Ramones, etc. |

But now he's free to do kicks and chug beers like Bob Pollard :)
Maybe even tie some scarves to his mic stand.

I remember the first time I saw Pixies in '88 Charles had some of the showman in him, swinging his guitar by the neck while singing In Heaven, and he also encored no guitar a few times with Tame. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcn0f5s-aas&search=pixies+tame
Tell us more about meeting Mark Lemhouse.
