okay, about three listens later, and I'm hooked. Its really strange to me how this happens to me on almost EVERY FB album, but I hear it at first and go 'oh well, his earlier stuff is great at least... can't be greedy' and then a few closer listens and it just emerges. THe ending of Angels Come to Comfort You DEFINITELY sounds like it could fit on TOTY, as does Discotheque 36. And he does sing a bit more than I was griping about on Tight Black Rubber, though he is channeling his inner Lou Reed in a good way. The shouts definitly fit into a pixies-ish vibe. And might I add the muscle-y end riff on Lolita is another great blast of Frank-noise, fittting right into his amazing ability to slice pieces of seemingly 'different songs' together (I'd put the end of Angels in that too).

Am I the only one who has noticed that most of the songs on "Bluefinger" have fanstastic endings? Often, so much effort goes into the beginnings of songs, and the endings are just a sort of fading-out of what has already gone on in a song (this goes for any artist, not just FB). But on this album, he seriously considered finishing the songs strongly.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Yeah. I dont want to charge once again the catholics, but this arrangements are COMPOSED! There is feeling in there, or at least "happy accidents". |

My mind is still blown by this album, after dozens and dozens of listens. I'll never forget the moment I heard "Threshold Apprehension." I swear it gave me the same feeling I got the first time I heard a Pixies album and realized I was listening to something special. I haven't figured out whether this is because I was so exicted to hear FB returning to his old sound, or whether it's because it's truly a memorable song and album. Probably both.
I second what Carl said, and would add: This is, for me, the greatest unreleased album ever. Can't wait until that's no longer true. And when it does come out, I trust every single person on this forum who has a leaked copy will buy it the day it comes out. It'd be a shame if we didn't pay for this great gift from The Man.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Please let Frank decide to shit can the record or maybe lose the masters...it would be another mystery record everybody owns in some form and be hyped and cultivated by the indiepress. Sometimes unfinished or unreleased albums are the best (Smile)

SHE TOOK ALL THE MONEY marks the first time (that I can think of) where Frank sings with a definate vibrato! Very strange, yet it really beautifies his already kick-ass voice!

I can't wait to buy this. So good.
Remember the part in loudQUIETloud when frank says he lets the others in the band hear his demos to remind them he's 'still in the songwriting game?'
This sounds like what that album might've been had it been made.
It's like Frank doing Pixies songs hence the name he used perhaps? |

Got it last night. Its all true, its fantastic. It resonated with me immediately, especially Capt Pasty and TA.
There has got to be some message to the pixies with the name change. I mean, if the Pixies (KD?) hesitated after hearing the demos and Charles said, "you can't put Pandora back in the box, Black Francis has returned whether the Pixies are on board or not" |

also I am generally against artists having wifey or boytoy join the band. Not for any ethos or anything, it just doesn't seem to work out. That said, Violet's voice SHOULD be on this record. She adds an element, and I don't think she sounds a lot like Kim (who is incredible, don't get me wrong) either. I dig it. |

I may be in the minority, but I need to chime in and say I really hear no PIXIES sound in this...perhaps CAPTAIN PASTY seems like it could be a distant cousin of a song from Trompe le Monde, but other than that, no. Sounds like Frank Black. In my opinion, of course. To me, BLUEFINGER feels quite a bit like ODDBALLS...wonderful unheard b-sides, or something. But don't get my statement wrong...BLUEFINGER is what we have all been waiting for...for years. Not to diminish the past 6 albums, but BLUEFINGER ARE GO!

I dont think the sound of this disc is pure pixies, but, I think some of these songs could have been great pixies songs and would not sound the way they do on BF. I dig them as is, and more than anything, we need an untethered Charles who can follow his muse and not be slowed down (ha, relative only to his past output) as he was during the Pixies touring years. If he didnt record honeycomb in 1 or 2 day marathon sessions, there would have been a pretty big gap between FB records (again, for him).

i agree, nothing at all like the pixies, (fort wayne, now THAT is pixies) but as a catholics-y album, it's great. threshold good stuff, the middle to ending of angels beautiful and your mouth into mine good stuff too. really don't like the fact he's releasing this as black francis though. looking forward to buying this cd, hopefully the release date gets brought forward, september seems a long way away for something leaked that's this decent. |

That's pretty much exactly what I thought on first few listens... now I hear some more variety in the arrangements, especially the ending flourishes on a couple. Stripped down sonics like oddballs, but a bit more subtlety in the songwriting....
Still processing, but loving it more each time.
Ft. Wayne is still on endless repeat though. |

Lolita, which I think is the best song on the album, sounds like a post-Catholics Frank Black song. |

Captain pasty, lolita and your mouth into mine are the best for me. I agree with you transmarine when you say that bluefinger doesn't sound like pixies album. I miss riffs that make the difference between pixies songs and FB songs. It is just pure Frank Black Francis.
But i'm still looking forward to seeing him on stage in Lille aeronef. It will be a great moment !!

Hey - anyone having an issue with the YouTube videos being private now, instead of public? I can't view any of them except "Your Mouth Into Mine" now. That includes the new "Tight Black Rubber" post. |

I have bought 5 CD's since I received Bluefinger and I just can't stop listening to it. The other CD's are just sitting on my shelf. His CD's are so addictive.

#1 well, anything released so far as black francis has been pixies, so just as kim (and a lot of others like myself) don't want the 'legacy' to be ruined...this 'tampers' with it a little. #2 what langdonboom said. lol
but hey, it's his work, he can do as he pleases. just airing my thoughts. |

Actually some of the songs on ChristMASS are credited as written by Black Francis.

Doesn't he make you sick? How does he do it? Not only does he have a staggering voice, write songs in any style you care to choose, plays a mean guitar and now to cap it all I find he plays a mean harmonica too!
Fekkin brilliant - Threshold apprehension has more than a touch of early white stripes about it (which is odd considering I've allways thought they had more than a dash of another band about 'em). And as for the ooooooo's on 'angels coem to comfort you' they exceed those of another song (you know the one).
As much as I love google I hope the leak doesn't damage sales of this gem.
Right, I'm off to google more of this Brood chap |

Loving this album. Definately one of his best. Good solid pop/rock. Guess his found his old muse whilst trying to write Pixies songs. Some of his latest songs have a Pixieish vibe about them. |

This album just gets better and better. FB blindsided and suckerpunched me with this one. Just when I wasn't as enthused about his new work as I used to be.
I have to agree with the general consensus that the Pixies comparisons are a little off the mark. There are a few moments here and there, but this does seem like a rejuvenated Frank Black, circa early to mid-nineties. Oddballs? I don't see it. I think some of those recordings sound a little muddy and rushed, though there are some great tossed-off gems.
Actually, my love for Bluefinger has compelled me to listen to his back catalogue in the last week. To me, if you listen to them side to side, Bluefinger seems like a distant cousin to the eponymous Catholics record. The brevity, the variety, the roughness, the immediacy. There's also a touch of earlier stuff (the odd-timed, lopsided ending of "Angels" sounds like the ending of "Parry the Wind High Low").
In short, it takes everything I like about a lot of the old records, assimilates it, and turns it into a new, energized direction. Viva Black Francis, I say.
In the end it's all pop song, I guess. |

Doesn't someone who shoots up in their hands end up with some nasty black & Blue Fingers ??
After you've heard this disc for a few weeks, 'Threshold Apprehension' might well be your least favorite track...
How about the 'Oh-Ohss' on Disco 36? Nice.... Great bass line and hook too, what more can anyone want?
I'm sticking with the alphabetical order no matter how the release comes out, it's spot on...

this album being about Herman Brood and all he should get some major attention in 'de lage landen'. I hope he comes on de laatste show or something. Bluefinger is absolutely great. To me it sounds like a sum of his hole carreer. I have it on repeat for a couple of days now and loving it more and more. It strikes me how he can make something as tragic as the suicide of Brood into a heroic romantic thing. He's a such great narrator. Amen. |

I think it's one of those rare albums that hits you straight away (like it has for me) yet continues to reveal new qualities the more you hear it - and it's only the rough version! For me there's a nod to all aspects of previous eras; Pixies (Captain Pasty), early Frank (Threshold Apprehension), Catholics ( Bluefinger), Nashville (Test Pilot Blues). Anyway, it's undoubtedly the soundrack to summer 2007. Felt a little uncomfortable downloading it but I will of course, like most here I'm sure, buy the cd when it comes out.
Incidently, I kept misreading Captain Pasty for Captain Pastry - now what would THAT have been about?! |
