It's the screaming on Can't Break A Heart that does it for me, sends shivers up my spine. Apart from that I think it's a pretty dull song, reminds me of early Blondie.

I won't (can't) get into the clash-of-(rock-)culture discourse, but I think it rocks pretty hard. Not too complex maybe, but hey! it's rock, no? It's a decent little ditty, imo. The screaming is wild! Franks energy is there. And he has a nice crescendo going on to get there.
The only thing I don't fancy too much is that the whole song rises a semitone for a more dramatic effect, and not once but twice. Whats that called again? |

That rising is my favourite bit of cheese. Excellent hollering on top. |

Found it on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modulation_%28music%29
Phrase (direct, abrupt) modulation Phrase (also called direct or abrupt) modulation is a modulation in which one phrase ends with a cadence in the original key, and begins the next phrase in the destination key without any transition material linking the two keys. This type of modulation is frequently done to a closely related key -- particularly the dominant or the relative major/minor key. A common device in popular music, the "truck driver's gear change" or "Star Search modulation," is an abrupt modulation, usually to the key a semitone above, typically used to provide an "emotionally uplifting" finale.

Damn, I'm not near my iPod right now. It happens at least twice during that song. I think it's at the beginning of the verses. Can't tell where exactly at the moment but will try to post that later if noone does in the meantime. |

All these 5's and 3's and 0's... Are you a true fan? or maybe.. a music critic?.. I could never mark/grade FB songs less than, let's say, 8, for every song he ever created (OK, except maybe I'M NOT DEAD, which is 6-7). He has so much talent that it's impossible for him to write a 5's and 3's and 0's songs. And especially saying for those energetic, full of insipration and desire songs of Bluefiner. (es, You Can't Break a Heart and Have It is simply AMAZING. No one in the world can scream with so much expression.

Where the shouting starts, (after the) second chorus. You'll notice when the key changes twice and the screaming gets more intense.
Without it the song would still be a very nice "circle song" a la Lou Reed's I Love You Suzanne, but that part is what makes me want to hear it live in Holland this summer. |

I gotta say, 'You can't break a heart' is one of my faves on the record. I prefer the Frank Black version because it's got his signature yelping in there... but I think the original is really damn good, too.

You can't blame Charles for the modulation, it's all Brood. Brood famously sung My Way so has everyone made the connection with Bluefinger's title track? Like it's a more personal version of My Way that Brood might have sung. Youtube of the kitsch video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K1fRY9Oe8U

Bluefinger was recorded in Portland, OR, with drummer Jason Carter (Guards of Metropolis), Violet Clarke on vocals, and bassist Dan Schmid (The Visible Men). Mark Lemhouse produced the album. http://www.marklemhouse.com/ for more news.

I thought there was a thread somewhere about Violet, but I am just going to say this about her.
I love her voice. She adds so much to Bluefinger and I wish I could find out more about her. She just seems so interesting.
Maybe I will grin but I won’t bear

To that kistsh debate around "heart" and Brood, that have already been discussed, I'd like to add that the "My Way" you said Brood covered, before being a respectable Sinatra song, is written by Claude François, maybe the kitshest french singer. Just to know, is somebody like Springsteen considered kitsh ? I meen, to a french rock fan, Springsteen or Steven Seagal it's about the same. |

I was intrigued and went to wikipedia. It claims that the lyrics to My Way were written by Paul Anka and were unrelated to the François lyrics.

PS Springsteen isn't kitsch. |

My friend Oona babysat Björk. Grotesque, check Kundera's L'insoutenable légèreté de l'être for an eye-opening definition of kitsch. Springsteen? I guess so.

This has probably been mentioned already, but did anyone else notice on the youtube video of herman brood (link below, hope it works) when he's on the train, right after he blows a line he laughs and exclaims, "Amazing, it works!" He's also wearing black leather in the shot. Again, sorry if this has already been mentioned and I just missed it. If not, check it out.

That's right, the melody is exatly the same but the lyrics are completely different, unlike The Sea, wich is from Charles Trenet and already had good lyrics. Hey I realize Sinatra had an obsession on french singers... By the way, does anybody except me thinks Wave of Mutilation is a secret cover of The Sea? Hum, OK guys, back to topic, pretend nothing happend...

"Bare Jr., who recorded The Pixies' “Where is My Mind” for “Meow,” lent his skills to Pixies leader Frank Black's solo effort “Bluefinger,” which will come out in September."
This is a mistake, I take it?! Or did BB Jr. play on Bluefinger?! |

Remember the apprehsension/apprehensive question in the discussion of the "Threshold Apprehension" lyrics? After watching this vid from Toulouse, France, I'm certain now that it's "apprehensive." (Which means I was wrong.)
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Just listened to Brood's Shpritsz, and he had some great songs. You can't break a heart and have it is good in my opinion.

i find the song bluefinger probably one of the catchiest songs on the album... i listened to it just before a week in spain with no access to music and i just kept singing it to myself.
i love the way the verses plod along
i don't need a do not... disturb.. me sign the manager here.... is a friend... of mine
and the kind of lazy guitar playing, which is actually very skillfull.
also, what does "I'm a jumping jack to this thing on my back" mean? it sounds cool. "Idiot" is just her sig. |
