We'll surely have to wait a bit for that FB-EDF project, though I think they WILL make it anyway, as they're very good friends. But with all those tours, Bluefinger, The Best Of, and the maybe pixies album... Actualy the couple Bluefinger-Best of have been a total surprise for 2007, I was waiting for a pixies album and a EDF album ! |

Don't forget about Grand Duchy and the Breeders. It's going to be a great next couple years!
What is the deal with Grand Duchy anyway? Is it Violet's band and Frank just sang on the one song, or is there an album waiting to be released, or what? Has anyone heard anything other than Fort Wayne?

Does anyone think Frank will get some grief from unsympathetic critics when they relealize the entire album doesn't sound like Threshhold Apprehension? It's a great single..but it's not the most indicative single. I actually had to re-calibrate my brain around it to appreciate the album for what it is. I went into it thinking it'd be mostly in the Threshold vein, but to me it's more in the eponymous Catholics album vein--minus the lead guitar. The occasional synths are a great addition.
The lack of lead guitar is interesting. I often found the lead guitar in the more rockin' Catholics work to be a bit hammy or indulgent--in the solos at least. But I grew to enjoy it over time, at least I don't notice it much anymore. I'm glad to see Frank give it a break though..though I can't say I wouldn't enjoy a few Santiago additions hear and there to give the songs that extra something. |

Good point, Itchload. "Threshold Apprehension" isn't exactly representative of the rest of the album. But I'm not sure any one song on this album really sums up the whole thing. They're all fairly distinct, and help make up the Brood portrait. I'm not sure many critics are going to dig this album, especially if they listen to it only once or twice. I don't think it's going to get great reviews. It'd be nice, but I don't think it's going to happen.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

After twenty or so listens...
Capn Pasty 9/10 Threshold Appreciation 10/10 Test Pilot Blues 6/10 Lolita 5/10 Tight Black Rubber 9/10 Angels Come To Comfort You 8/10 Your Mouth Into Mine 5/10 Discotheque 36 7/10 You Can't Break a Heart and Have It 8/10 She Took All The Money 6/10 Bluefinger 5/10
Of course, these scores are all relative, even Your Mouth Into Mine has a kick-ass intro that beats all other artists hands down! |

As far as critical acclaim. From the beginning of the rock "single" artists have put out the best, or at least immediately catchiest stuff first. Books, movies, all entertainment advertises the best part, so, you know, you'll want to see the rest. It's nothing new. Any professional critic should know not to expect the first single to be representative of the rest of the album.
I think critics will actually review this quite well. If they're worth their salt, they'll at least explore the Brood angle and do some research. At the very least, I think the whole thing is very appealing on first listen, and only gets getter with time.
I believe this is the album that makes FrankBlack-solo indifferent critics forget they are listening to "that guy from the Pixies" and just enjoy the album on its own merits. I think anyone could go into this one fresh off the boat and like it, no strings attached.

The only tune I still have mixed feelings about is Can't Break a Heart.... I'm glad it's not one of his songs. Good screaming, though.

As a different point of view, this is really how I enjoy the album:
Pasty 4/10 Threshold Appreciation 5/10 Test Pilot Blues 8/10 Lolita 9/10 Tight Black Rubber 10/10 Angels Come To Comfort You 10/10 Your Mouth Into Mine 9/10 Discotheque 36 8/10 You Can't Break a Heart and Have It 9/10 She Took All The Money 8/10 Bluefinger 9/10
But I dont skip the first two track as they clean up the ears very well!

Interesting, Grotesque. I'm surprised to see that someone would give both TBR and Angels a perfect 10. They seem like they'd appeal to completely different types of FB fans. Here's my take:
Captain Pasty - 6 Threshold Apprehension (not Appreciation) - 8 Test Pilot Blues - 7 Lolita - 8 Tight Black Rubber - 5 Angels Come to Comfort You - 10 Your Mouth Into Mine - 10 Discotheque 36 - 9 You Can't Break a Heart and Have It - 2 or 3 She Took All the Money - 6 Bluefinger - 10
(And the sum of the parts: 1,000.)
I feel bad giving a Frank song a 2 or 3, but it's really a lousy song. From what I've been able to glean, Herman Brood wasn't much of a songwriter. I think FB did his best to do a cover without ruining his own album. But Brood did have style -- tons of it -- which I think is what made up for his lousy songwriting. Ever see the YouTube video of Brood giving an interview with a bird on his shoulder? He reminds me a lot of Leonard Cohen there -- a drug-addled Leonard Cohen.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Didnt the orange album had Los Angeles and Two Spaces?
About Heart, it not stupier than a Little Richard song or Great Balls of Fire. The original Rock'n'roll was quite stupid actually, the meaning was not very sophisticated and sometimes it didnt mean anything at all. A lot of people outside of USA and England just take it for the sound of the words, but I think they understand the spirit of it. Frank Black himself said he took most of the pixies songs to enjoy the sounds and not to bother much about the meaning. |

I'm interested to know what's disturbing you (I mean not only you, trobrianders, but all of you) in that song. I tend to think it's because English is your first language, no ? When I first heard it and thought it was a Frank Black song, I thought "Wow, what a stupid rock'n'roll song" and I didnt ear at each verse if he could or could'NT break each think he was talking about, and what was the sense of all that. Knowing now it's not from an english speaking guy, I understand better why it is so empty and stupid, but I like it even more! |

The song has kitsch value. To be blunt (and unfair) the English speaking world don't believe that Europeans really get rock n roll. They think for Europeans it's more about 'the look'. Like expensive leather jackets and designer labels and eveything always fresh from the store. In other words we're snobs. But of course FB saw past this and so should we. I've rocked out to many Euro outfits as diverse as Young Gods and Les Negresses Vertes. Vive la similarité. But anyway, even if it's true, who cares. European movie-making is much better than Anglo. So what. Vive la difference.
PS I loved your Oddballs CD-winning song. Tu l'auras!

It's true that many Europeans who want to make rock'n'roll are like a quadriplegics' marathon. They dont get that they wont be able to make it, because as you said a culture is much more than some expansive look, it's everything you live since you're born. But like Lars Von Triers said, european people can now declare the're 25 per cent american, as almost everything we get from movies and music comes from there. But it's not a reason to make cops movies and rock'n'roll as a ridiculous kitsh copy. Europe doesnt have that kind of violence, we dont own many guns, we're not so obsessed by the competition, so when you watch a French movie and the cop boss try to shout in French an approximation of "What the hell is happening here? You've got two days to find the bastard that killed those poor girls!", it's pathetic. A guy like Sergio Leone could do that sort of thing, maybe Dario Argento a bit, but they're not many. Better do our thing, even if it's a bit more boring and quiter...
Oh I just read the end I thougth it was your signature, thanks, and thanks again to Brian and Dean to send me Oddballs, I'm as happy as FB on the cover. |

A modest reply. But Bertrand Blier is not boring. Emir Kusturica is not boring. Actually it's Anglo consumption that is boring.

I like "Can't Break A Heart And Have It".
But it's probably mostly because I picture a Robert Palmer video when I hear it. You know, which the silly models with white makeup on dancing in the background.
Same thing with Discotheque. I picture three girls on the side singing backup like some old Motown group. With the coordinated dance moves and stuff.

Can't Break a Heart... is just too unimaginative for me. Great energy, though.
Have you noticed the link between Discotheque and another song FB did with a girl serving drinks in a bar? I forgot the title... I love the chorus in this song.

I went over this in an earlier post, and everyone's entitled to his or her own opinions, of course, but I think a lot of you guys are really missing the boat on Can't Break a Heart. I wouldn't want to imagine Bluefinger without it.
