Well I guess I'll buy the full album on I Tunes for €11,99, they give away all the 21 live tracks for 0,99 each it will cost more. Does the live CD have liner notes?

you know, a lot of the songs we wished were on the best of are on the second discs (oxy moron, ain't she?). mumphrey did say that he thought some of the live versions surpassed the originals.
these live songs are great! (but there's noway anyone can get me to like johnny barlycorn)

And what makes it even better is the way it's transition into Living on Soul seems like a surprise. Best surprise ever. Set like Frank's instrumental break was a song instead.
As for liner notes, there's no booklet, just credits and a discography on the inside.
I'm guessing everyone that's gotten there's so far has gotten the European version like I have? I guess it won't be too hard to get the US bonus disc here. I just wish I could get hold of the Japanese version easily. |

Do NOT, I repeat do NOT waste your money on this! The packaging is AWFUL!!! To begin, it's one of those cardboard gatefold sleeves that scrathes your CDs every time you pull them out, but then, and most importantly, there is not a booklet to be found. The only photo in the whole package is the one on the front cover. No liner notes, NOTHING. This, in my view, is completely unacceptable for a best-of release. I haven't listened to the live disc, so that may make it worth it, but not $26.00. That's right, I paid $10 for shipping from the UK (could have gotten free shipping on Amazon) so that I could get the poster, and sure enough, what do I get? Some tiny little promo poster that's folded in every which direction and not even evenly, mind you, so it's just a mess of creases! All I can say is, the live disc better be GREAT!

You can download all 21 live tracks from eMusic too. (At least eMusic Europe.)

I was also displeased with the packaging, lack of photos, liner notes, etc. However, I just can't see NOT adding this to my collection. I bought it locally today for just under $20 including tax, and I obviously didn't get a poster. Listened to the first 7 tracks and then skipped to Threshold Apprehension. Will get back through the rest of the Best Of tonight. Haven't gotten to the live cd yet.
As an uberfan/completist, I had to buy this. However, I will probably not listen to it too much. I wish he'd poured more into the 'packaging' of the 2-disc, but at the end of the day, I'm happy to have it nonetheless. Can't wait for Bluefinger.

I have to agree with the packaging, but in my opinion, the live CD is sure as hell worth it. At least the European one for sure. |

Yeah, but with the downloaded version you get all the live tracks at once. It doesn't sound like buying the physical CD is really worth anything extra.
I believe it's worth buying for the 21 live tracks alone!

iTunes downloads are horrible sound quality (the 128 kbps bitrate is inexcusable). Do an A/B comparison to the CD and you'll agree, unless you don't have ears...

Got mine today, finally. The poster is kind of a bummer, as is the packaging, but the release is quality. Here's something interesting though, I'm in the US, but I ordered it from the cooking vinyl website. I was wondering what version I would end up with. I received the UK version with Bullet kicking off the second disc, but oddly, the track listing, song titles and lengths (if played on the computer) come up as the US version.. Bullet is called Deadman's Curve, Nadine is Raiderman, etc... weird. The live set kicks ass though.
I love this part... Yeah, we did it! |

Well, I don't know if it has anything to do with I-tunes 128 kbps rate, but the leaked version of Treshold is better than the one on the best of called "Radio Edit". Drums are flat.

Can you download anywhere else (besides iTunes) at a higher bit rate than 128? Is emusic higher than 128 for example?

According to E-music's FAQ on their website, the average bit-rate that their files are encoded at is 192 kbps. This is still noticeably low, though better than iTunes; a non-compressed AIFF or WAV file direct from CD is at 1411 kbps. E-music seems better than iTunes because of this and the fact that you can download mp3's rather than the protected AAC files that iTunes gives you. I find better quality than 192 kbps (sometimes) at www.gomusic.ru. Don't know how legal they are, though they claim to be legit and the songs are usually 19 cents each. Their selection is odd and often doesn't have what you're looking for, though they have alot that iTunes does not. Including the Beatles (and Beatles bootlegs). I guess some Russian gets the cash and the artist may not...quote: Originally posted by 1965

Thanks for the info Ben. I downloaded the (missing) 3 Japanese Live tracks from the 93-03 Disc plus some tracks from Snake Oil/OFRFTH off iTunes and they sound dreadful. The studio tracks sound extra bad to my ears.
A CD release one day would be pleasing.

there are a lot of sites like that which aren't real. if money's not going to the artist why not just download it illegally for free?

I would sooner download for free from LimeWire or Poisoned than pay for "bootleg-quality" from iTunes...quote: Originally posted by PixieSteve

This is an email response I got when questioning quality control:
"Thank you for contacting the iTunes Music Store. All music purchased from the iTunes Music Store is encoded using MPEG-4 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format at 128kbps, a high-quality format that rivals CD quality."
