Yeah, I can see buying it, I think I always assumed I would, but, after looking at it and thinking about it I can't imagine actually listening to it. I like the album concept myself. So, after I Gotta Move, I NEED Peace!
But, its going to be weird not to buy a FB release when it hits the shelves... |

yeah i'm not particularly excited about this....i made my own copy of the tracklisting, and sure, it does sound pretty damn good. however, unless it's been remastered or something i don't think i'll be rushing out to buy buy buy... and the bonus discs don't interest me much at all. quite disappointed by the choice of bonus discs....
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

I agree. Remember Death to the Pixies' second disc? To me that was something special and my incentive to buy that compilation. |

I just got an email from Cooking Vinyl with an ad for this release where if you preorder it you get an FB poster and can win Frank's handwritten lyrics. It said the best of cd "features Teenager of the Year, the Cult of Ray, and Show Me Your Tears." Funny. |

Pre-ordered it. I'm a sucker for posters. It will fit nicely among my Surfer Rosa one.

I'll pick it up for a few reasons. I'm hoping all the songs have been remastered for one. Also, I have to throw in on any excuse to support Frank and his projects. Unfortunatly, the tracklist makes me want to pull my hair out. Probably the least representative overview of any artist since any of the various Jethro Tull compilations. A couple of choices are acceptable. But... Hermaphroditos. If I'd never heard Frank Black and I heard that song, I'd never purposely hear another Frank Black song. How in the Sweet Kidneys of Christ do you pick that one over every other song on DITS? BTW, I'll pre-order for the poster too. For shame...
I love this part... Yeah, we did it! |

I actually bought it from a street guy in front of Le Zénith in Paris where Pixies were playing during the Bossanova tour in 1990. I was on vacation with my wife and by chance we could go. Ahhhh... those were the good times.

The poster certainly swung it for me. The Best of is for my brother, but shhh, don't tell him it came with a poster. Cheers!
(i have singles, eps, lps, movies and interviews. i wouldn't be me if i didn't have the best of (even though in my unoriginal opinion it isn't the definitive) |

Quick question (if anyone can answer it):
I live in the US, but would I get the "Europe Tracks" on the bonus disc if I ordered through Cooking Vinyl? |

I've read here on the news that the second live cd of the Best Of has different tracks for Europe, Japan and Us. But those discs do share some songs anyway. Does anyone know if those shared songs are taken from different concerts or are the same version for all the cd's? ...because I was thinking about getting all the 3 versions. Thanks PS I've already emailed Cooking Vinyl and still waiting for an answer. |

Well, got my Entertaiment Weekly and there's a review for 93-03. Simon Vozick-Levinson gave it a "B+" and called "Threshold" a "manic new cut." Overall, very positive. |

Am I too late for the poster and handwritten lyrics comp? Or is the poster free with every order, regardless of when it is actually purchased?

Two more days. Does this Best Of come in only one variety in each territory? Sometimes you get limited numbers with freebies or choice between card/plastic cases.

Got it in the post today.
Nice collection, love the mixing of the live songs.
The packaging was apparently designed in a lunch break. 'Brian' Ferry wrote 'Remake/Remodel', and, althought I love 'Manitoba', it's surprising to see Jean Black listed twice in the personnel credits. |

Yeah!!! it was released in france today. I enjoy the frank Black francis-like package. super quality live bonus disc. The best ofin itself is of course frustrating as it was already discussed: I gotta move, Hermaphroditos, velvety, california bound and Massif Centrale are not that bad but compared to the "A side" of the best of they are weak. I should listen to them all in one take. Maybe it can work, but I miss whyskey in your shoes, nadine, Whispering weeds or Blast off so so many BETTER tracks than those...
anyway, check out Stardom Road, the latest Marc Almond released today as well.
gros bisous, gros branleurs!

Its really amazing... I'm reminded of that Guy Garvey recent interview - everybody's best-of for FB is widly different! I guess that means that random chance is involved somehow, that all the songs are so close to being as good as one another that only the slightest personal preference for this or that sound in them set them apart.
To wit: Massif Central and California Bound are two of my all-time favorites! And so is Hermaphroditos! Though I might agree with you about I Gotta Move. Vive la difference! |

Here are a few early reviews of "93-03":
Portland Oregonian: http://www.oregonlive.com/entertainment/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/entertainment/1181602551264780.xml&coll=7
TEXT: One busy decade
Friday, June 15, 2007 CURT SCHULZ Frank Black is an enigmatic talent who might have invented alternative rock. He's also fixated on UFOs, and judging from his song lyrics he has a shaky grasp of Spanish grammar,
But say what you want about the ex-Pixie and current Oregon resident (aka Black Francis, born Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV) , the guy's productive.
If it's noteworthy for any artist to launch a major retrospective at age 42, "Frank Black 93-03" is remarkable in that the two-disc set is entirely culled from Black's second career, after the breakup of the Pixies, and it covers only the first 10 years of his solo work; he's put out several projects after the 2003 cutoff date.
While his full-length efforts are ambitiously uneven, this well-assembled collection offers 22 tracks from nine albums, a teaser cut off the upcoming CD "Bluefinger" and a bonus disc of live material recorded last fall. Short of playing solo sets for every fan who buys "93-03" (and perhaps that's under discussion), Black's definitely done his part to work his audience.
On this best-of, Black's compiled all his must-haves ("Los Angeles," "Headache," "You Ain't Me") along with album cuts that express his themes of evocative places (like "Massif Centrale," and the jazz-inspired "Manitoba"), his ongoing focus on sci-fi topics ("Men In Black") and his obsession with the American West ("California Bound").
Over the sequential timeline, Black moves further away from his two biggest contributions to modern rock (a surprisingly musical screaming-singing style and his trademarked soft verse and loud chorus attack) to favor a more Americana-roots flavored sound, but the recent live tracks and the single new studio cut ("Threshold Apprehension") show him as feisty and angular as ever. "Frank Black 93-03" should neatly serve double duty as a love letter to his fan base and a handy entry point for new converts.

TEXT: Video: Frank Black: Various
It's hard to imagine what to say about Pixies that wasn't already said during the band's recent reunion victory lap. The solo career of Pixies frontman-- Black Francis with the band, Frank Black as a solo artist, and Charles Thompson to his mother-- doesn't suffer from the same over-familiarity. Like one of his heroes, Jonathan Richman, Black the solo performer has largely shuffled off the burden of being a "seminal" band's former leader, releasing no-frills albums every couple of years with little fanfare. It didn't start out that way, though: Black's 1994 double-album Teenager of the Year, in particular, teased us with echoes of the Pixies' heady pop brilliance, though it didn't get its due at the time. Next week, the Cooking Vinyl label will release a 2xCD collection of Black's solo highlights called Frank Black 93-03.
In this 1995 Chicago cable-TV interview, Black talks about his influences, touring, and being a solo artist. "I am my own scene," he memorably (and accurately) asserts-- but he also assures us it's OK if you only buy three albums a year and listen to Bon Jovi. "The whole cool thing... it's all baloney," he says. In between such banter, Black performs solo rarity "Jumping Beans"-- which he describes as a cross between They Might Be Giants and the Violent Femmes-- and Richman tribute "The Man Who Was Too Loud", which later appeared on 1998's Frank Black & the Catholics.
Frank Black: "Jumping Beans" and "The Man Who Was Too Loud" (live, solo acoustic)
Back in those days, not only did MTV play music, it even provided at least a modest stage for indie rock. Matt Pinfield-era 120 Minutes was Pixies-friendly territory, and not only because the VJ sorta looked liked Black. In this 1994 performance, Black and his band casually make awesome with three Teenager of the Year tunes, "Whatever Happened to Pong?", "Thalassocracy", and "(I Want to Live on an) Abstract Plain".
Frank Black: "Pong", "Thalassocracy", and "Abstract Plain" (live)
When Black isn't reaping his overdue rewards with the reunited Pixies, he has continued to perform as a solo artist. This video from a November 2006 performance at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Ore., gives a flavor of his recent solo tour. Once you get past a few seconds of darkness, you can see Black giving an intense, solo acoustic performance of "Manitoba", from 2003's Show Me Your Tears. Compared to the Pixies, this is practically Leonard Cohen: Over heart-tugging strums, Black proclaims, "I have seen the face of God." Um, some in the audience might say the same, guy.
Frank Black: "Manitoba" (live, acoustic)
*****
USA TODAY: http://blogs.usatoday.com/listenup/2007/06/first_impressio.html?csp=34
TEXT: Frank Black, '93-'03 (out June 26): Black's solo work gets a raw deal. Most critics who grew up with The Pixies seem so invested in boosting that band's mythic heritage or hoping for a permanent reunion that they regard any positive qualities in Black's own stuff as a threat to those initiatives. But listening to this long best-of package, I was constantly struck by how consistently powerful and infectious his best solo material is, even when he's affecting a strange falsetto or blenderizing contrasting musical genres. If you haven't paid attention or want to reassess, this is a great jumping-off point.

FYI - I downloaded it from iTunes today and the US version has all 21 of the live tracks with it. It goes for $15.99 for both discs.
I don't know if the retail versions are still going with the 3 different live release format or what, but I was happy to be able to get them all at once.
The live stuff sounds great!

Nice spot Jefrey. That's brilliant. Now I don't have to buy a CD three times full of songs I already have just to get some bonus tracks! I can get them all for just £9.48!
