I love I gotta move, but Dog Gone would have been a great choice too All of these songs aren't my favourites exactly, but I can see why they would work good on a best of. It's all pretty much up tempo rocking stuff.

It looks to me like it ends with "Manitoba".
Yeah looks like 22, but the English/translated version has an asterisk at the bottom and mentions 23 tracks in the block text, as well as something about a new tune, whatever that will be, I do not know...

The tracklisting isn't too bad, I would just change a few things: It would be better if "10 Percenter" or "Old Black Dawning" was the first track. It should be "Superabound" instead of "Calistan". Almost anything from FB&tC would've been better than "I Gotta Move". And of course, like someone said, "Hermaphroditos" is a good song to skip.
What I'd really like for CD2 is alternate versions & re-recordings. It'd be great to have certain songs from the first two albums re-recorded Catholics-style, and then to have some songs from the Catholics albums re-recorded with multi-tracking and TotY-style production. |

I don't know which track I would axe, but I definitely would have made room for San Antonio, TX That is one of FB's top three tunes ever imo.

OK having thought about it - I would swap Velvety for San Antonio, TX and swap Hermaphroditos for St Francis Dam Disaster. Other than that, a pretty solid line-up. Everythig Is New is a good track too actually. Very difficult task to just pick 20-22 tracks from 9 albums.

I'm baffled by "I'll Be Blue" not being on the list. Maybe that's because it's my favorite FB song ever, but maybe I'm the rare fan that way. Still, I see it as the perfect song, musically, lyrically, everything. To me, it's his crowning achievement in songwriting.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

DAMAGE!
that's so cool, a bit weird since none of the Honeycomb, FM/RM, Frank Black Francis and Christmass is one it, but a bit of Bluefinger is an excellent addition. I will buy this the second it comes out. Bring on the live and demos!

chapeau Denis! It is, I like to say it. It's better and funnier IMO than shouting someone's prophets name or curse. Here it's also common to curse with diseases...cancer, tuberculose, the plague, you name it. I consider it to be the worst part of the dutch identity, and I wish to keep myself from it, hence the 'Damage'. Great record too, I should buy it.
But what about Threshold on the Best Of, I hope there are some sec. between Manitoba and this track because Manitoba is the perfect ending to any album.

i really like hermaphroditos - i think the cryptic lyrics are cool. also, it has a very good structure. it comes along like macho, but it aint. not at all. the track listing is okay. i agree that "i gotta move" is not a good choice.
definitely missing are SF dam disaster & suffering. not to have SF dam disaster on a best of is a joke.
personally, i miss thalla.

Got to agree with you, Saint Francis and Thallasocracy are absolute must haves for a FB retrospective.
I think FB must be the hardest person to create a 'best of' for. I think if i had been given the job of picking tracks i would end up in an asylum. I find it hard to pick the best songs form a single album let alone the his entire body of work. |

SF Dam disaster isn't one of his favorite songs I believe. Frank never played it live, couldn't remember the lyrics and took forever to finish the songs anyway (I read in an interview).
I sure like the song though, would have been a great choice. But what Best Of-albums are actually a good representation of the back catalog of an artist? I can't think of one

i know and i thought the same. but it is ridiculous - i mean, how lyrics, the story and the music go together in there, is out of space. this definitely is a best of-song.
the 2nd perfect lyrics-story juxtaposition is billy radcliffe. i miss it on the album too, but i do understand that it is not there. it is not very catchy for "outsiders". but SF dam disaster surely is.

Now that we know the list and general breakdown here are my fixes....
01: Los Angeles 02: Ten Percenter 03: Czar 04: Old Black Dawning 05: Abstract Plain 06: Calistan 07: Speedy Marie 08: Headache 09: Freedom Rock 10: Men In Black 11: Kicked In The Taco (You Ain't Me) *12: Dog Gone (I Don't Want To Hurt You) 13: All My Ghosts 14: Steak 'n' Sabre (I Gotta Move) 15: Smoke Up (Bad Harmony) 16: Western Star 17: St. Francis Dam Disaster (Robert Onion) 18: The Swimmer (Hermaphroditos) 19: Out Of State (Velvety) 20: California Bound 21: Massif Centrale 22: Coastline (Manitoba) 23: Threshold Apprehension (hidden track) 24: Bonus Album of Live Tracks/Demos
* Cult of Ray Ray doesn't deserve 3 songs IMO.
I would love to see one more song added from BLD. I Will Run After You, 21 Reasons or possibly Jane The Queen Of Love.

I guess I'm in the vast minority but if it did have three songs I can't see how one of them wouldn't be CULT OF RAY the song, except that it was never a single. THAT is the song I go right to every time on COR.
But I dont think Frank has every played it except on the COR tour, can anybody confirm or deny that? I guess that means he doesn't share my opinion of his high-rock value. |

totally agreed. COR the song is unbelievable, as the whole record is. COR the record is a best-of itself. creature crawling, you aint me, marsist, COR, the instrumentals,... really great. may god protect lyle workman all the time.
i think he played COR the song in vienna 1996, but i may be wrong. he played it solo acoustic in snta monica, 1996. however, he forgot the lyrics and in a later interview he sayed thats why he didnt like to play it live..

If I had to choose 1 song off of DITS it would be "The Swimmer". It's in my top 10 favorite songs by FB. I like "Robert Onion" a lot and I only removed it to make way for "SFDD" which is a superior song IMO. I would have liked to see 4 songs from DITS make it on a "Best of", "Bullet", "Robert Onion", "SFDD", and "The Swimmer". Choosing only two is tough.
*Edited to say including "Hermaphroditos" is major head scratcher to me. That song is one of his worst IMO. It is a rocker and probably a hoot for the boys to play live but listen to the studio version and tell me they even cared about it when they recorded it. The end seems like they even lost interest after the 50th time Frank repeated the somewhat annoying chorus. |

OK, they've got a serious problem there. SOME people like Dont Want to hurt you, so never mind about it. But EVERYBODY hates hermaphroditos, so what is it doing here ? At least, if Frank himself likes it, it might be a good reason: he wrote the songs, he has the right to choose. But if it's an agent or record company choice, that's a big mistake. |

I like "Hermaphroditos".
No problems with the comp tracklist here. I think it might've been interesting if they'd mixed everything up rather than gone in chronological order, but maybe they tried that and thought this sounded better.
Neither Frank nor Cooking Vinyl are lame enough to make Christmass be the second disc of this set. |

Hermaphroditos isn't exactly my favorite, but I can see why it works on a best of. I like the ending, love the sound they got too. Like everything on DITS btw. At least the singing is good and the playing clear, 'Velvety' is a good song IMO but I don't like the sound at all.
It's just a best of anyway. We all share the story of not being able to get your friends high on Frank, a Best Of won't change that. If we can't do it ourselves than no commercialy produced cd can. I think this Best Of is more a chance for the FB-fans who lost him during his solo-years to catch up.

I also happen to love Hermaphroditos, and every time I have to 'say my name after the beep' on some voice mail or something, I'm temped to say "HERMAPHRODITOS IS MY NAME" in song. In fact for a while that is how I had my voice mail set up. It would go: "Please enter your password"... beep beep beep beep... then... "HERMMAPHRODITOS IS MY NAME!... has... TWO new messages..." etc.
As for Robert Onion, it definitely is one of the most 'Frank Black' (at least to that point) sounding songs on the album. That kind of blast-blast-blast strumming is very much of the FB lexicon. So I can see why it would make a best-of, definitely. |
