| Hey guys! been away from the computer all day. just got a few minutes, but I was giving up until i found a way to interpret Fast Man. Ok here goes...So I think the song is saying that he is living a fast life. He goes for miles without any rest and then the only rest he gets is sleep. He does not stop and smell the roses in life, (but he uses the looking up at the stars). Anyway he is going through life without purpose and without purpose he is lost. But being a Fast Man, he can't slow down and always remains lost. Maybe I am wrong, but I would love to know what others think. |

| well now that is just sad. ok so i will just have to accept that i like the song and there is just isn't any real deep meaning hidden in it. Maybe i am just thinking a bit too hard about that one. |

i'd say every song got an individual meaning. one might say that this or that is meant in the lyrics, another person would say different. who cares, as long as everyone finds his own meaning. even if the original meaning of the song is totally lost...
i'd say the important thing about interpreting lyrics is that everyone should be able to find something that makes him/her feel better. |

thanks gapu, that makes me feel better. mine is more interesting to me. that is how i feel about my life sometimes so i guess that is why i interpreted it that way. Oh let me say that i have listened to Dog in the Sand. Great CD!!! love If It Takes All Night. My mission today is to listen to Show Me Your Tears. Can't wait. I love first times.  |

| Ok i listened to the entire cd and i think so far it has impressed me. It has potential of being my favorite. I love every song. I am used to most cds having songs that are not good, but not FB. He has a few songs that i cant quite understand the words, but he is a master. For sure. I am sure I will eventually figure out all the words. My mother even commented on how beautiful his voice is. I didn't let her listen to the harder stuff, though. She wouldn't be able to take that. lol. Everything Is New is a great one. I really loved the bluesey sound he incorporates into his music. (Ok that is not a word Blues-ie, ok whatever you get my drift). FB is a genre. |

| yeah Surfer Rosa. I really liked Cactus. I will have to listen to the songs while reading the lyrics. Some of the songs i couldn't quite get the words. Bone Machine was great, but that is one i couldn't get all the words. I hope the lyrics are available for this cd. my goal today is to listen to all of Doolittle. I love Here Comes Your Man. |

| ok i looked up TOTY and i have heard several songs. Speedy Marie, Headache, Superabound and The Vanishing Spies. If the rest is as good as these then I would say it will probably be a favorite for me. I have to get the cd so I can hear all of the songs. |

| I listened to all of Doolittle today. Wave of Mutilation and Tame were the two (besides Here Comes Your Man) that really struck me. I liked Debaser, too. Well they were all great. |

I remember when me and my friends first heard Doolittle. We just looked at one another in disbelief. My favourite song ever is on Doolittle "Dead". I ought to start a thread about that song. But I don't know if others love it as much as I do. Tame and Wave are great first choices.

When walking down the street listening to Dead on my ipod, I often feel like screaming "Dead!" in sync with Frank at random people, as a way of venting frustration. I haven't actually done it yet, but I'm sure their reactions would be worth it.

i had to go and listen to Dead again so I would know exactly which song you all were referring to. Now every time i hear that song i will have visions of screaming "Dead!" at people. btw it is a great song. i have to get used to all his different singing styles. i know he screams and such but sometimes i think "this is not the same guy singing all the time." Is he always the lead? (in the pixie i mean)
i looked up what i have and i believe he is always the lead. correct me if i am wrong, please. |

| Awestruck...Yeah, he always sings the lead with the Pixies (unless it's Kim singing, of course). An exception would be 'La La Love You' - drummer David Lovering sings that one. |

Just read this and brought back many many memories. I listened to Doolittle in a dorm room in lubbock, texas in 1993 and I swear to God I almost died and never looked back. It is very difficult to try to compare Frank to the Pixies stuff. Personally, Teenager is my favorite album maybe ever but saying any album is better than Surfer Rosa just sounds horrific. That being said, if I had a choice and could only take one record to a deserted island, it would be Teenager. That recording is from the future I am convinced...
Kim sings lead on "into the white" which was a b side off of the Here Comes Your Man CD (phenomenal single). She also sings lead on the song "in heaven" (sometimes, frank does as well on the "at the bbc" cd circa 1988. In Heaven was written by David Lynch btw. She sings lead on the most recent song Bam Thwok which to me is totally underrated. And of course Gigantic. All of that said, her voice is another instrument when it comes to the Pixies. Her voice is an instrument that compliments his voice in a bing bang kind of way. and it is one reason why it hard for me to compare frank vs. the Pixies (joey is another big reason but i think kim is the biggest)... Silver (doolittel). I think that is it...
If you have not listened to Bossanova yet, you are in for such a treat. I am envious of the ride you are about to take. Get ready because his voice changes again and it is as cool as EVER on Bossanova, TRUST me on this (see Rock Music). Good luck finding any other artist that compares. I've had no luck. Stephen Malkmus when he was in Pavement was the closest but it really wasn't that close. I love Wilco but they are more of a "feel" band whereas Frank has something incredibly unique... Sorry to go on so long, but again, I'm envious. I'm happy for you.
One last tip and there are thousands of them as you REALLY listen to the music and the words, things unfold. Listen closely to Cactus and David Lovering spells something out which David Bowie pillaged in his cover of the song. I'm pretty sure you have to have the song turned up to max in your car. I was jamming so hard to Kicked in the Taco after a frank show in dallas once with a good friend / fellow Frank fan that my wife had to come out and get us out of the car and she said she was pounding on the car window for an entire song but we couldn't hear her. Beer played a role in that film.

The first time I heard Doolittle, I had to stop my car in disbelief at what I was hearing. A friend had handed it off to me to listen to and I think it stayed in my cassette player for about a month.
It's weird to me that so many people come into the Frank Black pantheon in mid stream. I wonder what that is like? Doolittle was my first, and it wasn't easy to find Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa (I finally found it as the import that had both albums on the same disc, but not till a year or so after Doolittle had come out - remember there was no internet back then - you had to go from record store to record store to find things, and you had to listen to college radio to hear about cool bands).
I think it's awesome that people get to discover Frank Black fresh and new, but it must be daunting to try to get to know everything he's ever done. It was a lot easier to be there almost from the start and just have the latest album to digest. But lucky for you, it's 95% awesome, so it must be fun to catch up.
For example, I know Frank Zappa is supposed to be genious, but there is so much material I just wouldn't know where to start or if I could ever have the time to get through it all. I couldn't name a Frank Zappa song, and that's kind of too bad. It's just overwhelming.
So good luck, and I admire your dedication to The Man! It's well worth it. He should be inducted into to R&R Hall Of Fame as himself as well as the Pixies.

It was 1990, I'm sorry. I graduated in '93 but was lucky enought to meet a guy who threw the Doolittle tape at me as if it were nothing. He did appreciate the genius but he was looking for something else not sure what or if the dude ever found it. Anyway, agree with jeffamerica, totally on the zappa comments. I wouldn't know where to start. I count the days for every new release of Mr. Blacks'. I am just remembering that I would tape all of my cd's onto those Maxell 90 minute tapes and jam to them in my car. And I would freak if I heard a mere mention of the Pixies on any radio station. On FM radio today though, same thing. The only chance of hearing FB is on satellite and I don't know which station would even do that other than Fred with the Pixies old stuff...

That does it I'm defintely starting a thread on Dead. So great to know there are others who love it. Pixiestu, I'm not sure I could handle a wild-eyed guy screaming Dead at me in the street. Be careful out there. But I get where you're coming from.
I remember seeing them perform Dead on some tv show and after, the dumb interviewer asked Charles if the Pixies had a manifesto. Charles just looked at Kim and Joey, laughed and said "We used to have one but we don't have one anymore". Totally cool response.
For all lovers of Doolittle I recomend Ben Sisario's little book on it.
Hey Awestruck, did you check out the podcasts? If you love Nadine there's a lovely acoustic version on the latest one if you haven't got hold of the last CD Christmass yet.
