| I consider these two my "Forgotten" FB albums. I bought 'em, listened to 'em, and well, they just didn't stand out for me like alot of his other stuff. Anyways, I'm dusting 'em off again because I maybe I missed something the first time. What tracks are your favorites? You know, the ones that maybe deverve a little more analysis or attention. |

| love both albums. Faves would be Suffering, I Need Peace and Back To Rome off FB & TC's , and off Pistolero: So. Bay (my favourite catholics song), Western Star and ummm probably Billy Radcliffe |

I listened to Devil's Workshop on a plane from Dallas to Finland (stopped somewhere on the way) and it seriously puts me right back on that plane any time I hear "Are You Headed My Way" or "Heloise". OK, you are talking about a different set of records though, sorry. Had to get that off of my chest... "every once in a while". ridiculous. So dark. I'll be back to answer your question after I get out of my chair.

Off of FB&theC's, I always dug the rhythm of Dog Gone followed by I Gotta Move then to I Need Peace, probably my favorite stretch on the album. I Need Peace... "Bad Things will seep right down into your sleep" and "I got peace turned up so loud". I got very into Suffering back when that record came out. It is a different album, totally genius but different... On Pistolero, you may have been smoking something bad because I don't see how you missed this one. The whole record is great but focus on Billy Radcliffe, Skeleton Man, and So Bay. So Bay is Top 10 Frank song of all time.

FB&TC is very special to me. It's my fave FB&TC record along with BLD. It's not about the songs though, I'm not sure there's anything on there as great as, let's say, End Of Miles (except maybe Solid Gold. Now that's a killer song). But the album works so well as a whole. It flows perfectly, sounding like the entire album was recorded in one take. Releasing it as it sounded instead of re-recording it on multi-tracks is the best idea Frank ever had IMO.
Pistolero on the other hand is my least fave by him, despite some great songs (Western Star, So Bay, Bad Harmony... That's about it).

I'm far more into those albums now than when I bought them. On FC&TC I love 'All My Ghosts' through to 'I Gotta Move' but after that it's a bit hit and miss - 'Suffering', for instance is one of those songs where I think "this could be anybody". Ok, maybe not Celine Dion, but you know what I mean.
On 'Pistolero' my fave is definately 'I Switched You' followed by 'Western Star', 'You're Such A Wire' and 'So. Bay'. Some of the other tracks, like the aforementioned 'Suffering', sound kind of anonymous to me.
When FB&C and Pistolero came out I was dissapointed and confused by them, but nearly ten years on I wouldn't want to be without either. |

All My Ghosts is my favourite song ever. Other favourites are Back to Rome, Dog Gone, I Gotta Move, I Need Peace, King and Queen of Siam, Six-Sixty-Six, Suffering and The Man Who Was Too Loud. Basically nearly everything.
Off of Pistolero I Switched You, Western Star, 85 Weeks, I Think I'm Starting To Lose It, Skeleton Man and So. Bay are some of my favourites.
For me, FB&TC's selt titled is FB's best album. It's been said before but if this album wasn't in alphabetical order it would sound weird. It just flows so well and I love how raw the recordings sound. I listen to it every day.

Wow, it never occurred to me that the tracks on FB&tC are in order. That's kinda cool. I know he's done that with concert setlists (as have other bands), but not an album. It's a good thing "All My Ghosts" starts with A -- that song *has to* be the first one on the album.
Besides "All My Ghosts," I like "Six Sixty-Six" and "The Man Who Was Too Loud." I don't dislike the rest of that album, but it's certainly near the bottom of my Frank Black list.
On Pistolero, I love love love "Billy Radcliffe." Other great tracks for me are "85 Weeks" (the one about Captain Beefheart) and "Western Star."
Looking for memorable songs on those two albums, I'm not finding as many as I expected. I think what stands out the most for me on the Catholics albums is their overall sound, rather than individual songs. There's a definite mood there, and I put these albums on to fit my own mood whenever I listen to them. There have been some threads recently about turning people on to Frank Black, and I certainly wouldn't use either of these albums to do it -- there just doesn't seem to be much standout material on either to hook anybody with.
Oh, and it's "God of Miles," Denis. but it *should* be titled "End of Miles."

| It is "God of Miles" on Itunes for me. "The Man Who Was Too Loud" is my favorite off FB&Cs and "I Think I'm Starting to Lose it" and "Smoke Up" on Pistolero. |

I think iTunes gets its titles from CDDB, so probably both. And, to be honest, I only became aware of the song's title once I got an iPod and iTunes. Back in the CD days, I never paid attention to song titles. So, I could be totally wrong about the title. And I don't remember earlier forum discussions about it -- but I've only been around for a year or so.
And for future reference, you can usually assume I'm serious. Too many jackasses already on this forum -- somebody's gotta play it straight all the time.

it is funny because when I had cd's, I knew all of the song names but now with itunes i burn them, write the disc name on the cd that i burned it to and it goes straigt to my car that way so i have no idea of any names of any songs anymore. once i get my ipod in my car, i'll be able to look at it while i read my blackberry while i talk on the phone and sing "I think i'm starting to lose it" all at teh same time. I can't believe I didn't mention that song. That is a jam. So is "I switched you". I will go to another forum to talk about the genius of 1826.

pistolero was my favourite frank album for a long time.
the rawness and loudness really appealed to me.
songs like "so hard to make things out" are some of the heaviest thing franks ever done, and i love it.
the guitar interplay in the first half of the song mesmerises me.
that song is still my favourite on the album.
fb&tc's has a slow burner for me.
when it first came out i was really disappointed with it, and have only recently pulled it our for futher listens, and i do now like it alot. and as denis said, it does sound like it was all recorded in 1 take. has the feel of a live album to me, which it essentially is, but you know what i mean.

Steak n Sabre all the way for me. But FB&TC was a slow burner for me too. Hard for tracks to distinguish themselves at first.
Same goes for Pistolero. The standouts for me now are the epics, So Hard To Make things Out and So. Bay. Skeleton Man's like a companion piece to I Bleed and Western Star I guess sticks out in the same way as The Man Who Was Too Loud (off FB&TC) does, kind of like the way a single released before an album proper never really sounds like it's truly part of an album.
Anyhow I know both albums so well now and there isn't a single song I skip so I'd say definitely dust them off 'cos once they get under your skin you'll wonder why you ever doubted them.

I hated Pistolero when I got it soon after it was released. 'I Love Your Brain' got my attention but it wasn't enough and I kinda gave up on Frank for a while.
Anyway, I finally got into this album about 2 yrs ago. I still love that song! "I love your brain, it's a beautiful brain, wanna sleep with your brain..." I mean, come on!! how cool is that?!

I know I was part of that "Western Star" thread. I think that's one of the greatest rock songs ever written, in my opinion. But reading this thread makes me want to listen to both these albums again. I just got an iPod Shuffle, so I know what I'll be throwing on there when I go running this morning. I'll report on my findings.

Basically all of them on FB&TCs, gotta be one of FB's most consistent records, every song is pure gold, I especially love when he says "For sure" in a high-pitched voice at the beginning of "All My Ghosts", besides that masterful track my other favorites on that one have gotta be "Solid Gold" and "Steak 'n' Sabre", oh, and the guitar on "I Need Peace" is ass-kickin' in the truest sense of the word. The whole album is fantastic though.
As for Pistolero, I guess my favorite has gotta be "Billy Radcliffe", also love "You're Such a Wire".
I bought those albums in I think 2001 or something, when I first became obsessed with FB, and I thought they were pretty "same-y", but I now realize the error of my ways, they're among his best work.  |

When I bought them I thought there were too many "obvious" californian punk songs for a FB record ("c'mon is that Offspring or what?" was my reaction to "back to rome").
Now I quite like these records, the songs are not SO obvious and it's good to have them in FB's discography. |

| Yeah, All My Ghosts is an incredible song, and by far my favourite song from the record (though i do like the whole thing). I think from Pistolero my favourite track would be Tiny Heart, Western Star, Smoke Up or Billy Radcliffe. Having difficulty picking one from those four so i won't bother, they all rock. |

I've always loved "King & Queen of Siam" and "Steak and Sabre" off of the Frank Black and the catholics record. 1st time I saw 'steak and sabre' live, the vocals were just amazing.. Not to say that the rest of that album isn't amazing.
Pistolero - Western Star, Billy Radcliffe, I want rock'n'roll... so many to chose from. Hard to believe that "Valley of our Hope" was an outtake. When you get to that level of outtakes, I guess you're pretty much ready to release two records the same day. |
