Denis, re: the Beck thing, it was just that something felt different after I heard he was. I got no problem with he's a member of whatever group, just I felt surprise after enjoying his satiric lyrics of a police-state in a song like Hell Yes, and then I discover he's a member of a group known for being fervent about compartmentalising knowledge (i.e. ones who'll only tell you some parts of their system after you part with a lot of cash). Too, my mother's boyfriend was a Scientologist briefly when he was in his thirties and left when he felt he was being unfairly drained of money, he had a good friend who joined at the same time, is still in the group and has not spoken to him in decades as it is one of the tenets that if someone leaves the group, the current members are not permitted to have contact with them.

Good point. I actually forgot about that.
Frank doesn't seem to be too fussy about commercial/moral things like this. Remember, he consented the use of Tame in a Smirnoff ad because, in his words, it was a lot of money and he likes vodka! |

I can't say I'm shocked by these games, as I play some of them, but then I don't know how I would react if I had kids. Supposedly it changes your outlook on life a bit. Wonder what Frank thinks of letting his own kids playing them, but then I guess the question might be a little too private.
Although to be honest, in most people's minds, the fact that similar types of games (America's Army, namely) are used by the Army to target potential recruits probably doesn't mean that playing any of them equals endorsing war or supporting an invading army. That sounds like a bit of a stretch. And I'd imagine that's the way Frank saw it, if he even paused to think about whether he should accept that cheque or not.
It is true that, in what is broadcasted at least, the line between actual warfare and videogaming has been somewhat blurred, but I think this comes from careful editing on the authorities', and in fact the medias', side (show the war from a distance, close-ups are much too gross, plus it will make us look so technologically advanced, and even, if we can twist things just enough, more humane. Rememeber surgical warfare?). After all, it is now the army that chooses what the journalists are allowed to show, when they don't provide their own images. Paradoxically, when actual, ground-level images of what war still is and always will be about (i.e. people suffering, mangled bodies, blood and guts, naked humans piled up in approximate pyramids, that sort of unpleastantness that you definitely can't show a whole nation at dinnertime), they tend to come more and more from the grunts themselves, thanks to camera phones.
What I mean is, although it _seems_ that we can equate modern warfare to videogaming (point, click, whoosh, done, next target), I don't think it's actually the case, and I can't see nerdy gamers become ubersoldiers anytime soon... That sounds too much like Ender's Game in a way.
But then, wanting to have nothing to do with gun culture and the overwhelming spectacle of violence that seems to have taken over every screen is, in my view, a valid moral stance and I certainly won't blame Owen for it. In fact I'd rather commend him for having a moral stance to begin with. That's something I don't feel up to myself.

so i assume frank is pretty much a republican, and i truly don't give a fuck about it. when i wanna read about politics, i read marx, or todd or any conservative newspapers (knowing your ennemy) but i sure as hell don't give a damned fuck about frank's opinions. the guy is just a singer.

committed? I don't know Andy, that would mean there are principles involved. All I know is I watched a little of the trailer, it felt nasty and I said what I said. I could buy a Frank album tomorrow, just at the moment I'm not feeling it. These days I'm trying to cultivate some more gentleness in my life, and when I saw that clip, something in me said "stay away." Though like Erebus sez, we're far from rational and I'm the last person to claim to be such a tightly integrated system that I have rock-solid beliefs, sometimes I feel like a million persons. I'm more than seventy percent water so I'm hardly in a position to renounce something forever. Maybe I'll see a Frank show again, maybe I won't, who knows? just currently I'm going on a feeling, so if you're looking at me from a logical point of view, it's entirely understandable that you feel I'm too strictly committed/not comitted enough.

Fantastic post, jediroller. I'd reply to the whole thing, but there's too much there to respond to adequately, so I'll fill in the blanks a little on the first paragraph.
Certainly it's too much to expect Frank Black to answer the question of what he'd think of his kids playing this video game, but as a parent, I'll gladly answer it myself. I'm not sure being a parent changes your outlook on life as much as it solidifies what you already believe and feel. I have two songs, ages 4 and 7, and I'm trying to raise them to be the way my parents tried to raise me: I want them to be creative, inquisitive, responsible, and respectful toward their fellow man. If I felt like a video game where you pretend to be a vicious killer and blow the heads off enemies somehow helped them toward that ideal, I'd be all for it. This game is sick; whether or not a person believes in the value of warfare, he ought to recognize that this glorifies it and has very little redeeming social value.
And lest you think I'm presenting an unreasonably cleansed version of the world to my boys, I do realize that they're little boys and they love a great fight scene in a movie. And like any little boys, they like to imitate these fight scenes, which I think is perfectly healthy. Yesterday afternoon, they pretended they were Peter and Edmund from the Narnia movie, running around the living room with their swords and taking on the White Witch and her animals. And we watch "MythBusters" all the time, where the guys on the show re-create all sorts of explosions and gunplay that are war-related.
But there is such a big difference between 1) understanding war and taking part in little-kid role-playing; and 2) placing yourself in a completely realistic depiction of war and pretending you're single-handedly blowing the heads off a series of human-looking characters. This type of violence is unconscionable, in my view.
Oh, and Frank Black/Charles Thompson a Republican, Teafer? If he said it, he was blowing smoke up the interviewer's skirt. They'd run him out of Eugene! Then again, when they see this video game ...
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

so you KNOW what frank thinks, eh? wonderful. there were a certain number of interviews little francis did by that time that all went in the same direction. i remember the question in les inrocks was like "you have repeatedly stated in interviews that you were rather on the right side of the chessboard. comments ?" but you "coastline", you won't get fooled, cause you KNOW what's in franky's head, right? how very very interesting, but like harry said "opinions are like ass hole, everybody got one"

and coastline, i believe your statement is exactly the same left wing people self righteousness i was mentionning, to think that right wing people are basially cunts. so frank's cool, he's cultured, has a sense of humor, writes bizarre songs THEN he's a democrat?
Coastline, i'm not trying to start a fight here, allright? but there is a fraction of the forum that has decided that whatever frank does, writes, says is ubercool. well, no. some concerts (one in fact) i saw were shitty, frank says pretty stupid things every once in a while, and he could be a die hard fan of the bushes for what i care.
for me, frank's alone in the major league of songwrtiters with macca and brian wilson. but that does not mean anything else than that.
pour les francais : être de droite, c'est quand même pas comme aller à un meeting du FN, je me trompe ?

I definitely took the never buy again statement literally and I was thinking about the logical implications of it. If you're not going to buy an artist's product due to a moral dilemma, wouldn't you also not wish to propagate anything with which that artist is involved? Fan sites, playing your record collection for friends, radio stations promoting his music etc. Also, if feeling so strongly about this, wouldn't you wish all others followed your lead? In which case that artist would never see another cent for any of their art ever again. In which case said artist would be forced to join the Marines in order to feed his family. I mean if you need a reason never to spend another cent on frank, did you not hear Honeycomb? Ha, just kidding.
Seriously, I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, I'm just expounding upon your original statement. For what it's worth, I empathize with your conundrum and it saddens me that frank would lose fans over this.

I regret speculating online about Frank's political position. Could and should have made my point without doing so. It's not like I have much more than tea leaves to go on. But it's worth noting that Doolittle is almost twenty years old and that a person can, and should, change a lot between early adulthood and forty. Hell, "even" I went through a muddle-headed period when I was twenty. I was in love and all sorts of insanity ensued.

here's what I've noticed: every once in a while I post an article/opinion about nefarious doings in high places real or imaginary and we trade snooty remarks with each other. So now I have made up a story where you are bitter and sarcastic and you have one where I am a petty and selfrighteous crusader. I could continue in this way and make up a more elaborate insult but I feel like the more I do, the more I'm merely picking up on something I don't like about myself and passing it your way, like I've swallowed venom but think it's you that's going to get sick. So anyway, peace.

Are you kidding me? There is some mis directed anger here. The problem is that Bush is an a-hole, that the military recruits poor people by luring them with money and a college education and flashy adds, and that in today' world there is just a lot of violence. It has nothing to do with a video game or a soundtrack to it. I like these type of games. I have no inclination to go kill people. If you think your kid is dumb enough to wanna run out and kill someone after playing a video game then maybe you shouldn't let him play it.
Do you really oppose all war games? No squirt guns, halo 2, or the board game risk? Are you in favor of a society where all simulated violence is eliminated? Don't you think that we are sophisticated enough as humans to make our own decisions? Or do you think that we are so impressionable that we need to walked through life with a hand to hold so we don't go astray?

Nobody said they're going to take away your shoot-em-up games, Someone. I guarantee you'll always get to play them.
And it isn't about whether my kids are dumb enough to go out and kill people or not -- it's about whether I think something (in this case a video game) is going to help me raise them in the ways I've determined to be make them valuable members of society. We do play the board game Risk in our family. It's a great strategy game, and it helps my kids learn how to think ahead. But Risk is a far cry from realistic graphic simulations of killing. There's a huge difference there. It's silly of you to compare them.
Whatever happened to Pong?
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

yikes, the conclusions some folks leap to. did I say eliminate anything? did I mention making anyone's decision for them? or that I felt the need to walk anyone through life? no, no and no. I only stated what I did or didn't feel comfortable involving myself with. I could care less if you want to spend all day playing a wargame called Run Sand-Nigra Run while drinking a glass of goat's blood, it is none of my business.

Maybe Frank should have covered a song for a Nintendo Wii game. Then everyone would have been like "aw that is so harmless and fun." Then Frank's kids would go bowling and golfing because the video game influenced them to.
I just hope Frank Black's children don't grow up wanting to hurt people because their father covered a song for a violent video game trailer. [emphasis on sarcasm. don't take literally. just a joke] |
