And it isn't about whether my kids are dumb enough to go out and kill people or not -- it's about whether I think something (in this case a video game) is going to help me raise them in the ways I've determined to be make them valuable members of society.
It's not Frank Black's (or Sony's) job to raise your kids, much less make them "valuable members of society."
This thread just gets worse and worse.
By the way, since the song on the game is a Stooges song, that means Iggy had to sign off on it too. So don't forget to throw him on the fire.
Personally I don't look for political idealism in a rock musician. It tends to muck up the works (I won't name names). |

You're putting words in my mouth, mixedbizz. I didn't ask Frank Black (er, Black Francis, I guess it is now) to raise my kids. Where, in this thread, do you find me saying that? What I said was I don't intend to introduce this type of video game to my kids. And in a completely different part of the conversation, I mentioned my unease with him being involved with the game -- that comment was based on my distaste for violent video games, regardless of my being a parent.
Be disgusted with this thread all you want, but don't invent something that's not there and then rail against that.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

The GTA games are totally sociopatic, and feature music and vocal contributions from any number of recording artists. |

I believe he means 'Grand Theft Auto', a series of popular but extremely violent video games. |

GTA is kind of a weird, on-the-fence kind of game for me in this argument.
I played it and at first found it revolting, especially that kids would be able to play it. But the violence is so over the top and cartoony that it's almost funny. The game is not realistic in any way. The biggest problem I have with the game is that it sucks. I didn;t find it fun to play at all. The controls are shitty, and the in-game missions are tedious and boring to repeat over and over till you get them right.
Ultimately it's the parent's responsibility to make sure kids know right from wrong (and reality from fantasy) before the opportunity to play these games comes into their hands. In this day, it's probably impossible to keep kids from playing the games, so education is the most important thing.
I still think the realistic war games are kind of sick. Even "Metal Gear Solid" made me feel queesy. But actually reenacting a historical battle, running around killing human beings - I don't think it's healthy.
I think that's the point people are trying to make. Is FB in a way supporting the virtual killing of people? If you're a parent, does that concern you? Or is it no big deal, it's just a game. I don't think this is a stupid topic at all. It's totally worthy of discussion.
Violence, sex and death have always been topics of FB's music, so if you're a parent, you might as well ask yourself when it's appropriate to start letting your kids listen to Pixies. Or the Doors, or what have you. We all have bands that we think are exceptional, but probably would need a bit of explaining to a wide eyed kid.

GTA is outrageously fun and stupid. I played it with a bunch of drunked punks (it fits well to punk humor). That game shows more than any independant movie the degree of desesperation and morbid materialism of our rotten society. Anarchy!!! And Gus Van Saint is useless. |

my gut reaction when I first heard the guy's point was "awww come on man - it's a video game - get a grip!!"
when I watched it a second time I saw his point - I could understand where he was coming from - but I still don't hold anything against Frank for doing it
but that's not why I chimed in tonight - I chimed in because some of you are mentioning GTA. I don't play video games - but I used to watch a buddy of mine play GTA at his place and he had all the cheats or whatever and I used to watch him just run through the city and wreak havoc and I was simutaneously amazed and disgusted.
I was wondering if any of you caught the Coke Superbowl commercial that was done in the GTA style. It had the GTA guy running through the city doing his usual killing and mayhem - then he drinks a coke and becomes a do-gooder. He gives his jacket to a homeless guy and helps people out and all of this kind of thing. As well as a whole bunch of other things just about like this.
I'm not writing to give some great message or anything - I just thought it was a cool commercial and was wondering what ya'll thought of it. Cuz when I saw it I thought "YEAH!!!" And in all the hubbub since the Superbowl where they size up the commercials and what not I've not seen this one even mentioned.

just watched it again - you know what would be cool -
I don't have the computer savvy to do it - but one of you guys aught to put a FRANK tune to this commercial - that might bring a little ease to Newo's mind
I don't think "Gimme Danger" is quite the right tune though - what should it be?? hmmmmmmmmmmm.....
how about "My Terrible Ways" naw - maybe........"Bad Wicked World"......naw......how about "Better Things"...or "Horrible Day"...
or......"Sing For Joy"
while I'm on this train of thought - why don't one of you put a Frank tune to the Kevin Federline "Popozao" clip?? |

It also argueably trivialises gang violence and makes it seem fun and acceptable to kids. Not to come over all morally superior. I mean, I have played some of the GTA series. |

I live in a town where Video game companies are big employers - GTA started life here in Dundee, Scotland.
I get told, because i'm in illustration and design, I should get into that market but i'm wary of it for many of the reasons you folks have mentioned. There's no getting away that this stuff has an strong negative effect on some kids - even older kids who should know better - but by some quirk of nature, it has no effect on others who can rationalise it all for what it is. Fantasy.
It makes me feel uneasy to admit to myself that I enjoy 'Goodfellas' - but I rationalise it as almost a morbid fascination. Also, there is no way you could watch that movie and think being a 'wise guy' is a good thing to be. It's a 'live by the sword, die by the sword' situation, and that is clear.
What worries me with the computer game industry is that the inevitable end will be photo real characters. Even putting a photo real version of yourself (or someone else) in the game. The technology is there, it's only a matter of time.
At the end of the day I wouldn't endorse a game like that encourages that kind of violence. But then who cares if I do? However, Frank, in admittedly a relatively minor way, 'has' endorsed the game - and because of his status he has to accept 'some' level of responsibility. Maybe a lot of you don't care what he does away from his albums but this 'celebreties' sell - the advertising world wouldn't waste the millions they do on celebrities if they didn't - so he actions have repercussions and he's responsible for that - that is the life that he has chosen.
I'd be interested in what Franks views are - and I don't think that that is an unreasonable of me? Me buying his records doesn't make him my slave but - he has 'some' level of responsibility to his fans.
I won't stop buying his stuff though. I take music on a 'song by song' basis. Just because I liked the last album doesn't mean I'll like the next - and unless it recognisably manifests itself in his writing his politics are his own business.
Sorry for the long post but this seems to have been quite an emotive subject. And why not.
My mind is like the ocean...
