That said, I really would like this album to be available in stores. I don't want an internet-only album. Please. |

for trading purposes: people like lossless more due to the fact that the quality will always be maintained unlike mp3's which often get the mp3 > wav > mp3 stage many times, which always results in incredibly crap sounding tracks. but for official releases, i don't feel like paying for already inferior material. if i'm paying for something i want it in the best quality available.
all i can say, thank god for polio! brian |

Exactly. Also, this guy went about his test all wrong. If you just go through a random playlist of lossy and lossless versions of the same song and do a blind test, it will be very difficult for anyone to immediately know which is which (unless, of course, the bitrate is extremely low). That does not mean that the differences are not there. If, on the other hand, you take an mp3 track and the original wav and do comparisons of each one, taking a specific part of the song and going back and forth between the wav and mp3, it will immediately become apparent that there are obvious frequency losses in the mp3, in addition to some digi-noise, which of course increases as the bitrate gets lower. These differences might be so subtle that it takes a test like the one I described in order for them to become apparent, but the fact is, there IS indeed a NOTICEABLE difference, which undoubtedly contributes to the overall effect of the song. Therefore, I do not wish to pay money for a lossy, sub-par, not-top quality audio file. But all this is irrelevant anyway, as it has been made pretty clear that this will be available on CD.

This is all just 100% speculation from a complete outsider, but because of the quick nature of this release (no "ramp-up" promotion months in advance, it's CALLED cHRISTMASS and we don't even have a release date yet on Thanksgiving) and how low-key it is, I'd bet it's a mailorder-only thing. Or if not, it won't be in very MANY stores, at least (haven't some reported seeing Oddballs in stores?)
I bet it's also a limited release. 2,000 copies, 3,000 copies... No clue. I guess only Frank and his management have an idea of how much something like this -- a release pretty much directed soley at the hardcore fans -- would sell. So I'd suggest that anyone who wants this keep a close eye on the site and be ready to buy quickly. I hope it sells well. I hope it sells out in 3 days. Maybe Frank will do more things like this, if so.
Mailorder is cool with me. Mark me down for two copies. |

OK, so on the Nov 22nd I turned the album in. It will be available mid December on Cooking Vinal. Track list is a little different than my post a while back. To be able to add in the new one (Don't Get Me Wrong - which turned out to be my favorite song on the album) and the Shrimp Song, I had 2 drop 2 others. I felt they weren't fitting anyway - so now I beleive it flows really nicely all the way through. And its over 71 minutes - so about as long as any album ever. (you can only fit 74 minutes on a CD) Plus 12 more songs from the DVD. A few people were asking about the selection process for the live songs - I'll put up the process we went though in another post.
Myles Mangino
Here is the final playlist. Do What You Want Gyaneshwar Bullet I Burn Today Wave of Mutilation Living on Soul She’s My Way Massif Central Where is My Mind Raiderman Demon Girl Dead Man’s Curve Cactus Six Sixty Six Radio Lizards Don’t Get Me Wrong All Around The World Nadine Manitoba The Water Outakes / The Shrimp Song

How did you order it? Didn't see it listed yet in their online store.
edit: answered my own question. It can be ordered here: http://www.recordstore.co.uk/home.jsp?&wherefrom=productdetail.jsp?productPK=unittest-c4LIMpSiCYU7PLEkqN3IEb-1
And, as CoF asks, will there be North American release(s)? If this is going to be a limited release, we need to know whether to jump on this now or wait for other outlets to offer it. Thanks for all the work and inside info.

Thanks Brank. I swear I searched an hour ago and couldn't find it anywhere at Cooking Vinyl. I ordered it at recordstore.co.uk for the exact same price for item and shipping. However, I plan on cancelling the order if we get better prices for a US release, announcement of which I suspect is forthcoming.

Never The Same Color?
Maybe "Los Angeles" is on the DVD?
So, I guess "The Water" is officially the name of the song? I mean, it's been submitted, so there's no changing it now, right?

Actually "Los Angeles" is on the DVD (unofficially). I know I said this in an earlier post but in case any missed it I'll post it again. You have to click on 'Play All' in order to see it. He opens the set with it before going into 'Brackish Boy'.

"Exclusive! Released 18th December '06 (TBC) CD and DVD Set, NTSC format, please check your player."
This info comes from www.recordstore.co.uk/cookingvinyl. Does this mean the DVD won't work in my european DVD player (I think it's PAL format)? |

Yeah, PAL is the european format. NTSC {National Television System(s) Committee} is the US format. You'll need a multi-region dvd player. If you look up the model of your dvd player online, some of them can be set to play other regional dvds. Usually it's just a matter of pressing certain buttons on the remote and then entering a code.

And I want to know if I'll be able to read the DVD before paying £11.99 + £2.29 for posting. Yeah, I'm cheap...

So, then a DVD only available from Europe is only playable on American DVD players? Hmmm..
I kid, sort of. Anyway before going to the trouble to get an all-region DVD player or deciding not to buy this ChRISTMASS thingee, Europeans might want to know that many DVD players can be easily hacked to play DVDs encoded for other regions. Often it's just a matter of pressing a certain combination of buttons and/or readjusting your players settings.
Here's a page with a list of players and hacks for them: http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/
If you don't find your player in there, just do a google search for your DVD player brand and model number + region + hack.. |

Will the DVD generally play on a computer or do they also have the regional restriction? |

when i put region1 dvds in my laptop it asks if i want to change the region code permanently, or just use this one time. I think i remember a window coming up saying that it would automatically change if i kept playing region1 dvds anyway.
I'm using InterVideo, it might be different for other players

I think it might be Windows Media Player that gives you so many chances to change the region settings, then stays on the last setting you used. I think Nero or some other program can play multi-region with no restrictions, maybe several players do that.
