You must REALLY be digging She's My Way.
Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho? |

In the podcast, Frank Black alluded to the fact that some of the newer songs on Christmass may be the ones he wrote for the Pixies reunion album, the ones Kim passes on, back in August (there was an interview with Frank about it at the time). Is that the case? Which tracks?
As for the griping about Fastman/Radar Man, I'm a 34 year old guy who started listening with DOOLITTLE in high school, and have bought every Frank Black record since - retail. Even the iTunes stuff, with the initial release of Oddball, the EPs, everything. I've seen him solo in small clubs, etc. I'm down with the country-rock tinges. But I gotta say, Fastman STILL hasn't clicked for me. It seems very sterile and slow, the lyrics seem awkward. Of the Catholics period, my favorite tracks are ones like Hermaphroditos, where his quirkiness is worked through a Byrds, Graham Parsons idiom.
Also, in my humble opinion, I've been able to recognize Joey Santiago's playing on every Frank solo track before I look at the liner notes. He's the Don Rich to Frank's Buck Owens. Even if he doesn't want to tour, I'd enlist him on the recording sessions. I know Frank likes working with pros, and has been very complimentary about Lyle Workman and others, but to me, Fastman is the ultimate example of how too much musicianship can kill rock and roll. I remember Richie Ramone arguing with Johnny Ramone because Richie wrote a song with a minor chord, and the Ramones only used straight power chords - root and fifths. To me, Frank had WAAAAAY more "soul" on songs like "New House of the Pope", with emotional but obscure lyrics, pathos in his voice and a band that sounded like a cabaret/bar band than anything on Fastman.
Anyway, I've been a serious passenger along for almost the whole ride, and have few complaints, but I don't think Fastman was the record to put out to capitalize on the Pixie reunion, and I also don't think that the sales are the fault of the audience, but of the record. Something akin to Cult of Ray (with a better cover, or even a repackaging of his harder songs from his Catholics output probably would've given him a huge solo platform. |

Mine came yesterday. I haven't had time to listen to the CD, but I watched the DVD and it's fantastic! The packaging is great, and the liner notes tell who played what on each track, like Dog In the Sand, which I always appreciate.

I don't understand how people located 3000 more miles away from England than I am got their copies days ago, and I'm now evidentally going to be Christmass-less until at least January 2nd.

I just found out the post office is closed on Tues due to Pres. Ford's Funeral. It's also obviously closed Monday due to New Years... so it's going to be a few more days for those in the US that haven't gotten their cds already. |

To all those who haven't received XMASS yet and won't get it until next tuesday or wednesday, I feel your pain, I don't have the CD/DVD yet either. I foolishly downloaded mp3 versions, which sound absolutely dreadful.. the sound is distorted and they skip the whole way thru, spoiling the experience big time.
Anyway, I wish a Happy NY to all!

Anyone else here think Demon Girl sounds like it could be Tenacious D song? Something about the lyrics, (tales of rock and roll vs. the underworld) acoustic guitars, I don't know, I can just hear Jack and Kyle singing it.

Got it in Reno today. Only watched the DVD so far, 'cause I was at that show. Just had to go back there first. Good to see some of that again.

A little package from the UK with a CD and DVD in a nice purple slipcase arrived in Lewisville, TX today. Solo acoustic "Bullet" is blaring out as I type. |

It's REALLY NICE to have Frank's solo acoustic arrangement of "Wave of Mutilation" on an official CD. |

"Demon Girl" is so 60's. And British-y (that pronunciation of "garage"). To me, at least. It sounds like something that would fit in nice with a lot of great old forgotten 60s singles. Put it on the mix CD between "Baby I've Got News for You" by Miller and "Another Game" by Grapefruit.
Listening to these great solo acoustic concert recordings, I hope Frank makes a "one guy and a guitar" record of all new material some day. Like that Johnny Cash record. Maybe in 20 years when he's 60 he'll do it. |

Upon audition, as in inaugural audition, this Christmass CD-portion disc stands as one of Frank’s finest. Ever. If a person were confined to that proverbial island with but one Frank disc, from Pilgrim to FMRM, he could hardly do better. From select classics to novelties to studio/hotel treats, it is quite the tour-to-force (or is that tour-du-force? I’m not a man to know.) I love ALL the new stuff, especially the freshest “She’s My Way” and “Radio Lizards”. Given the experience with the genii, from Townsend to Bowie, it’s shocking how much Frank can still dip into his reservoir. Deep and wide? Seriously! The man has got the goods. I’m pleased that those unable to catch him on this North American solo acoustic set now have these recordings. Bullet (always a latter-day fave, and apparently his also), Burn, Wave, Living on Soul (!), Massif Central (!!), Raiderman, The Water. Good stuff, all the way though. What a document! Yes, I am enthusiastic. Now, twenty years on, young as it could get, with a touch of maturity on the, our, side. Feels fun to rely upon a smile.
