A little elf treated me to three of the new songs on Christmass today -- the three that weren't already available on YouTube. I really like She's My Way and Demon Girl. Still warming up to Radio Lizards. The thing I can't help thinking when I listen to these songs is how it's almost as if Kim Deal's voice was meant to back Frank's in so many places on these songs. The other thing I've noticed is that it seems like Frank had a cold when he recorded much of this album -- at least a couple of the new songs, plus some of the September live tracks. That's always been one of those little things that sort of bothered me on some FB recordings. Maybe what I'm hearing is a man whose voice is partially shot from so much touring. I don't know.
Anyway, thanks to my little elf for the new tracks. It's Christmass indeed.

Hey, I want a "little elf". With Frank what you hear is what you get, as I know you know. He's definitely a creature of his season. He works through anything and everything, and sometimes he's hoarse, stage or studio. As he has said, to bastardize the man, half of creativity is simply doing. You gotta get up in the morning and do, come what may. And we get Frank, warts and all, bless him.
edit: i am a stupid, to quote the immortal Roberto DiVicenzo.

Whoa, I just read that Robeto DiVicenzo quote a couple hours ago, Erebus. It was in a book by Rick Reilly, the sports writer. What a co-inky-dink, as they say.
Yes, bless Frank and his warts. Dylan used to work the same way. I liked him better back then. But I still love him.

kathryn, Llamadance, and any others who may be interested - there is a far more lengthy explanation of what's going on as well as some interesting background info regarding the recording of Radio Lizards on page 1 of this thread, courtesy of Myles Mangino. It's not in his first post, it's the one where he lists all the tracks with corresponding notes.
Nothing is ever something. |

'Demon Girl' just sounds better on each listen. And 'Radio Lizards' too. They're fabulous as they are on the record, but I'd love to hear a fuller recording sometime too. |

I'm not surprised with Don't Get Me Wrong. Kim's harmony over the top of Frank would have suited it so well, even though the FB version is just perfect without her and will always be the definitive, for me.
That must be quite a mess to decide where the new songs are going to end, with on one hand Kim Deal uncertain about recording with the band and on the other Eric Drew Feldman strongly involved on the next solo album (featuring Dead Man Curve with that typicaly Eric disco punk beat that we could hear on the tour, cant wait to hear the studio version). A solution could be that Eric produces the next pixies album (didnt he play on Trompe?) but no: on the podcast interview he clearly said that he wants to consider every arrangement possible, like having frank with just a cello and a piano, wich means more liberty than having the rock band on each song. A vague reminisence of the production of Remain in Light by the talking heads, ending up being almost a Brian Eno/David Byrne solo album. |

Eric did play on Trompe Le Monde. He played keyboards on Alec Eiffel, Planet Of Sound, Bird Dream... etc. He was also on the american tour following the release of the record. |

I really like Radio Lizards. I was expecting BB, DJ, and EDF to be on these new recordings. That must have been a great live show, I hope that shows up somewhere.

Just out of curiousity: Anyone in the states who has recieved their copy of Christmass, where are you? And when did you get it? I want to try and gain a visual image of the movement of these babies across the country, although I am not expecting any ryme or reason.

Interesting that "Dead Man's Curve" on the CD is listed as written by Frank Black, but on the DVD as Black Francis.

I noticed a page number on the bottom right-hand side of the packaging invoice (mine's page 88) I'm trying to figure out if this is page 88 of "x" amount of Christmass cd's sold/ordered of the total stock. Basically, that way people might get an idea of how many copies were sold. The "order number" at the top right of the invoice is most likely a total number of orders of anything from CV, so the page number is a better indication. What page number do you guys have?

Just watching the DVD now - i wish it wasn't so washed out in parts - the camera that is shooting from the left-hand side is really hindered by the stage lighting.

Oh, and this is printed on the invoice as well:
Coming Soon: Frank Black : Fastman/Raiderman : Competiton
What's that, a contest or a new version of the cd set?
