why do you do your job, money, fun, creativity, because you have to (or any other reason)? can you have it all? fun, creativity, a good working enviornment and a good paycheck?

I own a machine shop. Being an owner, there is a certain amount of freedom that I enjoy. There is nothing but creativity when it comes to how we attack each job, so that's kinda fun. I sorta had to start my own business because I was at the end of my rope working for other people. But, now I work for customers- there is always a catch. The economy is exploding here in the Seattle area, so the money is just ridiculous. I'd have to say that I'm the happiest I've ever been concerning work right now.

The guess the answer to why I work is pretty simple. I like my toys and being comfortable is a plus. Unfortunately, that takes money.

I sell rich shoes to expensive people. I find it quite enjoyable and it pays the bills, with a little left over for those slightly more delectable things.

Why do I do it? The above, and the reason why most people have a job; I can't afford not to. It just so happens I quite like my job. The commission is very good too. Not to mention the fantastic shoes I'll be getting next month.

I can't figure out why I do it...it's certainly not for the pleasure, and it barely covers my bills. That's why I'm contemplating buying a gun and going on a rampage.

I look after the kids during the day, so the pay is terrible but it's pretty rewarding. (and frustrating at times). I also teach computing part-time at the local college and that's good fun. Keeps me in beer money at least.

I read this as Work: What Is It Good For. Which made me chuckle. I work in university admin, at a lower end but great big university in London. It entails telling morons what they're doing wrong all day (this covers students and academics, mind), and every so often drives me completely loopy. It pays ok for this sort of thing, and good holidays (27 days annual leave plus bank holidays, plus free days off between Christmas and New Year. I stay for the sole reason that (with occasional exceptions) my work colleagues are absolutely brilliant and make the day for me. I've worked in offices where this isn't the case before, so I value this very highly.
If I ever leave (I depress myself with that phrasing) I want to do something I actually want to do, but I don't know what that is yet, so I'm content.

Out of curiosity, how many 'bank days' are there a year, and how do paid sick days work there?

I get 10 days off (paid) a year, about 8 calendar holiday days, and 2 days sick. 20 days a year. I guess it's better than some companys, but it sucks when you get horribly sick and have to sacrifice no pay in order to struggle to get better, or show up to work sick and get reprimanded or written up (it's happened) for not functioning properly.

Let's see, eight public holidays I think. I'm looking at about 38 paid days off in total, I guess. Sick leave is pay-protected by law, so if you're sick, you get paid - it's hardly your own fault, is it? Obviously, you get investigated if you take the michael, but I know people that do, and get away with it.
I think if you're on long term sick leave (like three months plus), your pay is reduced to half. I think.

I'm thinking something similar to this:

Or perhaps:

I'm not usually that keen on brogue style shoes (or winkle-pickers at that), but I tried on a pair of those today and they were great, especially since I've wore Doc Martins for approximately three quarters of my life. That picture makes them look a little unpleasant though; the pair I'm after is coloured more like the first shoe.

One thing I do wish upon my job; I wish it was a tiny bit more refined, perhaps shelving some of the 'Crocs' shoes and silly things like that. I'd love to work in a proper mens shoe shop, on Jermyn street in London or something. Especially without the dance hits '98 playing. It's really not what you want to hear at 8:45am. Mind you, I usually get to slip on the odd album each time I'm working, which is nice. This week I managed to play a Talking Heads album, Pulp's 'His n Hers' and Animal Collective's 'Feels'. It's got to be pop, but not necessarily as the general public know it.

While I've enjoyed most of my jobs, and met some great people, I've never "done something I loved".

That is my goal, and I'd like to get started while I'm still young, I just have to stop putting things off.

In the local paper everyweek they do this "Spotlight" section, where they have someone, usually an self-employed artist type, and when asked about success or being happy, they always say something like "Success is doing what you love for a living" or "Follow your dreams"
So I have to think there's something to it. Plus they always pick "The West Wing" as their favorite TV show ( except of course for the ones who say they don't own a TV ) so maybe there really is hope for me.

I'm a mischievous fella who makes a bit of dough here and there. I tend to work in homely neighbourhoods where people tend to be trusting, as it makes my life easier if not theirs. I don't exactly love it but it's all I'm good at. The only other job I had was at Dixons selling tvs, but one day a bunch of widescreens got lost on my shift, and the blame was placed on me.

i work for the money....
well considering i live in the australian outback, why else would i live here?
once reality caught up with me and i realised that temping in london was never going to pay back my $50000 student loan or buy me a house, desperate measures were called for.

I work as a Geologist in a really really big open pit iron ore mine.
onto holidays...i work 9 days on and 5 days off, and get 25 days annual leave but no public holidays - but i get an 10% on top of my salary for working public holidays....

but yes, the only reason we live in the small town we do live in is for the money...
considering the nearest town is 450km away and the nearest city is 1200km away, the isolation is pretty tough to deal with, but thats why they pay well.
oh, and the heat...don't get me started.

I like my job, at times love it, but its not what i ultimately want to do. What do i ultimately want to do? I'm not sure - i have 3 answers right now - 1) get a part time internship at a recording studio and learn that trade. 2) go back to school and get a masters in education and teach high school. 3) open up a coffee shop/performance space.

Right now, i work to pay the bills and to do something that i sorta enjoy. Oh, i'd also love to be a stay at home dad.

work to me is but a distant memory....

I'm about to do a pgce though so next Autumn I'll be a science teacher. Hard work, decent holidays, decent salary and room to manoeuvre when I get round to settling down. Plus, fabulous excuse to buy stern teacher clothes.

Something that keeps me out of trouble?

Actually I'm lucky enough to work with some of the nicest people I've ever met. We all work pretty damn hard together, it can be quite stressful but at the end of it all we all have a laugh together over probably far too many beers at the end of every week. It's a fairly relaxed environment and there's no room for attitudes or bitchyness though the pay isn't fantastic. Still I'd rather be happy where I work for less money than unhappy for more.

Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself.
