My son just scored his first soccer goal ever tonight. He is 6, and this is the 4th season he has ever played (fall & spring are each a season) but he has never come close to scoring. He is more the brainy type as opposed to the super athletic type. Anyway, I was coaching our goalie at the entire opposite side but saw him kick it and watched it sneak in just inside the goalpost. It was the winning goal, and I was so excited for him I had to restrain myself from running down the field to hug him. He was so happy after the game! Being a parent definitely has its unbelievable elations.
Anyway, couldn't help but display my fatherly pride!

It's Striker, homers, as in 'soccer'. Centre Forward I believe is more commonly used in 'football' (not to be confused with the sport where by hugging counts as a tackle)

He was pretty darn fine when Norwich made it into Europe. Bryan Gunn used to rival Neville Southall for best bald goalie at the time as well. I've been reminiscing of my football sticker collection (season 94/5), good times.

One of his coaches IS from England, so we were talking about how our team should be extra gritty and have really hard slide tackles and such. But then again they are five and six, and many of them are more interested in pulling grass out of the field.
Position wise, there is pretty much goalie and the pack. He was playing in the pack.

I was against that change because I thought it was going to cause a scoring-fest, but last fall was the first season with that change and it went well. Kids did score a little more (but scores were still reasonable) and nobody had the burden of being goalie (and as a coach I didn't have the burden of telling someone they had to play goalie). |

I would love to say it's a Davis self-esteem initiative, but it's a national AYSO recommendation. Beyond the self-esteem stuff it's suppose to get the kids playing soccer and defense rather than relying on the keeper. Plus, we know keepers aren't real soccer players - social misfits.

| I have sympathy for the young goalies I see stuck in full size 11-a-side goals. Catch the ball right on a windy day and you can lob him from the half way line, poor kid. |

No goalies is nonsense. You take your turn in goal like everyone else: how else are you going to make a decent keeper out of someone? Toughen 'em up, I say.
Or, introduce playground rules...
Stick goaly - can't leave the penalty area
Rush goaly - can handle the ball in the penalty box and move anywhere on the field.
monkey rush goaly - can handle the ball anywhere on the field...
Jumpers for goalposts, isn't it? Hmm? Marvellous.

Aren't some of the best keepers in Britain from the US? We don't have problems finding people that can use their hands; it's the feet we have problems with.

You make a good point, but if you're eliminating goalies now, don't hold much hope for the future...
You're right actually, I've always been impressed by Brad Friedl in particular. There's one or two outfield players with some skill, Brian McBride (or is he Canadian?), and I hear nothing but good things about Freddy Adu, I look forward to seeing him in the World Cup.

| I'm talking about small sided games. AYSO (AMERICAN YOUTH SOCCER ORGANIZATION) is trying to move towards young kids playing 5 on 5 games without a keeper. I think that's a pretty good way to learn skills rather than a pack of 22 kids chasing after the ball. |

I've seen matches (5-a-side) where instead of a keeper, they have goals about 1ft high/2ft wide. Reducing the size of pitch, number of players and size of ball is a great way to teach the children. They get more of the ball individually, learn to pass and receive because of this, and are under greater pressure from the opposition due to the smaller pitch.
Then you grow up, start smoking and cough'n'wheeze your way through the first half. Subbed at second. |
