There are really a lot of decent programs out there, but I haven't used any enough to offer any serious recommendations, sorry. You can't go wrong with the LAME codec, though, which I believe EAC uses.

To convert wave to mp3, and back again, I use and recommend dBpowerAMP Music Converter ( http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm ). It's LAME, it's freeware and with added codecs will support many additional file types such as WMA and Ogg Vorbis.

Hmm... I'll have to check that out, I've heard good things from a few others as well. Of course, I have absolutely no idea why anyone would want to willingly convert to Microsoft's proprietary format... I #&@$%ing hate WMA. Slow, ungainly, and a crappier version of something that already exists.

Nature doesn't want me to fucking finish this song. Today I get home early from work with intent to begin recording. The power must have gone off and on while I was at work...no big deal. I got my package from Musician's Friend and happily restring my acoustic. First I record my drum track, which I recorded into the keyboard's memory. Oh! The power went out! The memory was wiped! No problem, I'll redo it...there goes 15 minutes. Guitar track takes a few takes until I get a take when I enjoy enough. That's fine...now I'd like to hear what it sounds like on my PC speakers (good speakers). Oh wait! "System failed memory test" WOOHOO! MY COMPUTER WON'T BOOT. I pretty much lost all hope, figuring something got fried, but what the fuck, I'll poke around. I take out the CMOS battery and clear the CMOS, it boots up, I change settings, I'm in Windows. Fucking thank god. Time to record the bass track. Oh! Wait! My amp is making an annoying fucking noise! Oh I must have to resolder that fucking capaciter that I've already fucking soldered about 5 times. AGH! Here I am now...I don't even want to know what's going to happen with the vocals....I swear to god I'll get it done by Monday night.

OK, so I got all the music and vocals down, and I'm pretty satisfied with the results. Well, I'm as satisfied as I will ever be, since I'm not a perfect musician (I rarely do a take without a mistake...and this is the only recording I've done with piano, and I've never really played piano before this) nor am I a good/great singer, but I did my best. Of course I'm more judgemental upon myself cause we are our own worst critics, but I have a fear of people cringing when they hear my stuff. I hope I'm not the only bad singer out of the bunch. The instrumentation in my version is different and a little more "fun" I guess you could say. I think it's slower than the original, but that's cool. Agh, I hope you guys like it...I'll have it mixed and sent by Monday night.

Sounds good, Jim.

I'm officially on my way to the lake in the next 30 mins or so, but I have the FTP server up all weekend. If you've already uploaded and the file isn't in the covers directory, this is normal, so don't worry about it. You also aren't able to download from there. I'll do all the catchup when I get back Tuesday so don't worry too much if something urgent comes up while I'm gone. Good luck with the recording everyone - oh, and we re-recorded our drum track and it sounds about 50x better. Maybe 100.

Have a great weekend and happy Canada day to all (even non-Canadians).

Hopefully I'll have the finished product(s) in my hands by tonight. All that'll remain after that is choosing between two mixes, creating a sample for and adding it to the beginning of the chosen mix, and MP3 encoding.

I recorded the drumtrack for Parry The Wind High Low yesterday.

The drummer didn't know the song and for some odd reason I forgot to bring the cd with me, so I learned him the song by memory...

Tommorow I will record guitars and lot's of voices...

bye

So (as Dean mentioned) we re-recorded the drum track for His Kingly Cave. I must have played it 20 times, never getting it quite right, missing a fill here and there and such. So we took a little break and just jammed and did a lil' karoke to some Frankage, and suddenly it was very late. So we had one more go at it and boom, one take and I pretty much got it. What is the deal with that? Oh well, it got done. That's what I get for changing the drums. Not that what Scott does isn't brilliant, but you know, you gotta keep it interesting.

Robert Onion is a done as its going to be. Recorded through a Tascam US-428 to a Celeron 550 laptop running CEP2. Various remote locations.

The lappy started to bog down on 9 tracks with real time effects, but still chugged along like a champ. CEP flat out rocks, Adobe better not muck it up.

Will be FTP'd tomorrow when I hit broadband.

I recorded with my husband, steaknsabre, and I'll tell you, once the band learned the basic song, we stopped listening to the original. Brian and I are the only FBheads (or are we calling ourselves Blackheads?!?) in the band (the otthers have a few of his CDs, all but one know the Pixies...) but i think it turned out better this way. If your drummer got the jist of the song, but sounded more like HIM (the drummer, that is), I think it will be more interesting anyway. I'm looking forward to hearing everybody's own spin on things. If I want to hear carbon copies, I'll just listen to FB himself!

a couple days ago while i was getting ready to record a frank tune, i inadvertently started playing "there goes nadine" without ever knowing it before. :) I took that as a sign that I should try that for the comp. (I hope nobody else has called this already! eh??) about 500 takes later I got a decent enough recording (guitar and vocals live.. and some drum machine that didn't really pick up). Then yesterday I did some frantic backing vocals which I'm not sure I'll use. Now today I'll try to add bass and maybe do something about the drums.

Just to let you all know....since my original collaborators pretty much flaked out on me, I found someone else to record drums for "Speedy Marie" only this past weekend. I need to lay down a couple more tracks tonight (vocals and another guitar track) and do a mixdown. I will upload either late tonight or tomorrow evening...

I hope things have gone smoothly for you all, and I can't wait to hear everyone's covers!

i just uploaded mine too, i uploaded the wrong version with less bass and acoustic guitar by accident. sorry for uploading 2 copies the one with "CORRECT VERSION" is, as it suggests, the right one. If anyone feels like listening to it and critiquing, i might be able to change some stuff before the final. Infact it wouldn't be a bad idea for us all to comment on each others before its finalized, just so its as good as possible.

we can't download covers from the ftp so we'd each person would have to host their own mp3 and put out the address.

Parry The Wind High Low is uploaded!

I forgot to name it after the people who worked on it:

Surface Noise (me and 2 friends)

I'm the one that's singing and the rythem guitar('s) are mine
It's a traditional cover although it's a lot faster and darker I think.

BTW I can't scream like Frank at all so I just did something with guitareffects on the mic.

We recorded it on an analog 4 track

so i guess my vocal track isn't TOO bad on white noise maker. I think I'm gonna keep it and upload it soon. For those of you who fly solo and don't actually have a band name, are you guys gonna make one up? I made one up cuz i don't just want my name to be used.

I used my name. I figured if I didn't want my name on it, it wasn't good enough to upload.

Then again, I could be using a pseudonym, you'd never know.

Minor stipulations have arisen, with more major consequences....

I will not be able to upload Speedy Marie until Wednesday night or Thursday afternoon at the very very latest. Dean, I've e-mailed you about this a little bit ago.

Everyone else, I'm hoping that it won't be a problem....I've been really stoked about having the opportunity to do this.
