Well yeah, I'm not going to be able to finish "freedom rock" for several reasons I'd like to leave unexplained. Sorry, but really, one less track you have to download!

Some interesting news: I just completed an interview for the Raleigh NC newspaper, called the News & Observer. They're doing a story about local artists' use of MP3 as a distribution tool. I made sure to mention frankblack.net and our little project here. Not sure when the story will be out but I hope it will generate some publicity for our hard work. When I speak to the reporter again later this week, I'll mention it again.
Bully for us!! -Chris

Oh, and that's great Chris. A little publicity certainly can help the board and as far as the CD goes, it really can't hurt for those contributing to get some exposure too. Thanks for keeping it in mind as you talked with the News & Observer, and be sure to post here if we do get any coverage (CD or FB.Net in general). I'd kind of like to read it even if neither are mentioned, actually...
Ryan, I've sent you my address, again, it's too bad you have to abandon, but I suppose it makes deciding on the final disc a bit easier if I need to find a bright side. Looking forward to hearing it either way. |

Puerco's cover of Heloise was just sent to Dave, I sure hope y'all enjoy it. I'm going to be saying "y'all" quite a bit from now on because I'm moving to South Carolina! A year ago I was living in a friend's garage and losing my job, but the Puerco website finally paid off...(Told you Dad! College is for Suckers, long live guitar!). Someone who liked my site happened to be the Creative Director of an established marketing firm and asked if I'd be interested in a career as a copy-writer. They're paying for all of me and my girlfriend's moving expenses and we'll be living in Myrtle Beach, earning a lot more than I was at the stinkin warehouse in the middle of Amish hell.
Oh yeah, I'm very sorry....about Heloise..
Give it a second to work on you, it’s not quite as dissonant during the verses. I did it that way after hearing them play this one live- I think Rich tuned his guitar down about 1/3 of a semitone and it just sounded so sick and jagged, 2 qualities I cherish in this song. None of my friends seem to like this song as much as I do, but it was my favorite from Devil’s Workshop after hearing it play once. Well hot-diggety-dang, I sure do hope y'all enjoy this here ditty.
Carolina Bound,
Eric R.

Eric, congrats dude. My company did the same thing for me 8 years ago: moved me down to Raleigh (from NJ...ugghh!) and paid for everything. I'm proud to say I've never actually said "y'all" so don't feel like you have to. I see you're on IUMA as well. I like Radio Poisoning the best. You're like Ben Folds (vocals) meets Joe Strummer (music). Good chord changes too.
Skeleton Man is in the absolute final stages. I've tweaked just about everything I can to make it better, based on 3rd party feedback. The upload will be coming soon.
I may as well do some pimp-age while I'm here: http://christophervanepps.iuma.com

A little pimping is well-deserved Chris, I was humbled by the incredible sounds at your IUMA page (...Ombudsman is hilarious). If you need any more 3rd Party Feedback, I'd be happy to Beta Test.
I cannot wait to hear what you do with a Frank Black song!
BTW, "Carolina" has me in tears. I am personally adopting it as my moving anthem, with or without your permission. Once I get settled, I'm gonna buy your album. Keep on Fockin in the Wee Rorld,
Eric

eric: can't wait to hear your Heloise. Your "How You Went So Far" is fucking excellent, and your own songs are great as well...I love Heloise.
Me? I'm still picking at the song....I gotta get it done! I'm gonna hopefully put down the drums and guitar for my second take today. |

Eric, I had a listen to Heloise, and although you asked me privately what I thought, I thought I'd say publicly that it is quite tasty in several regards. Thanks for getting that to me, and to the rest who have sent them in already. Things are starting to accelerate as far as people completing their cover, and I hope to have an FTP server set up soon, I'm just waiting on a few parts. Actually, I'm fairly pleased with the majority of what I've got so far, and I'm looking forward to the next few weeks and mid-July when the tracks are mastered somewhat and we're all discussing the album and everyone's inpretations of the covers.
I brought a flute into His Kingly Cave the other night, after it hit me that I had nothing from the winds in there. It actually is filling in for the solo until/unless Speedy M gets his part done. And we have a few backing vocals from Speedy M in there as well. But not in a traditional sort of way. You'll see. |

My dream of subjecting the world to my off-key caterwauling will soon come to fruition.... and sure, the solo would be nice, but I thought you might at least be happy with the rhythm guitar and drums tracks I laid down.... oh well, I suppose I'm used to crying myself to sleep. |

I finally got the fucking keyboard drum part finished (I suck, it took no less than 50 attempts). I'm going to be home alone Saturday, so I hope to get as much done possible then. I wouldn't expect anything much different from the original version in mine...depending on how much time I have...it'll have a little extra "oomph" to it. |

I'm suffering from "recorder's remorse" (similar to buyer's remorse) in that as time goes by, I think about the things I've added to the song and wonder if it could be better, louder, cleaner, is it mixed correctly, etc. So that's what I'm up to.
Also, I spoke to that reporter from N&O (see my earlier post) and I asked her if she could make an effort to include "www.frankblack.net" in there somewhere and she said no problem. The story will run on Wednesday, June 25. It would be really nice if it ran in mid-July: the CD would be all done and ready for downloading. But hey, you can't have everything.

The rough-mix for Brackish Boy sounds GOOD. My CD copy is adequate insurance in case of a freak accident involving my producer friend and/or his PC. |

Heh... kind of what I was thinking. I suppose he might have had to run out to get a new string, though... so maybe 20 mins. |

sorry to bum everyone out with my man of steel cover. it's not too different but i tried to aim it as if it were recorded during the first FB and the C's album. So it's a bit heavier than the real one. and the vocals SUCK. i don't have time to fix them or re-record so i am stuck with a silly version. oh well....heh. |

So, there's a week today remaining until the deadline for this compilation CD, and then we can unleash our musical musing upon the world, or failing that, the FTP site. Just a reminder to everyone that things should be in the wrap-up phase (ahem... Dave) by now and hopefully this goes without saying. I have received about a third of what I expect to see fairly early so I'm fairly positive that the majority of those remaining will be done on time as well.
Then, just so the FTP site is not being flooded July 2, remember that the tracks still have to be chosen carefully and then "mastered" or brought to the appropriate levels, courtesy of Atheist4Catholics, and the final tracklist given to AdamWest for the CD artwork. I will post when the CD is done and on the FTP site, and it will be on the news page as well.
As far as sending me the files goes, I hope to have my FTP server up by tomorrow, at which point I will email out those involved in the compilation so that they may upload there instead of trying to work out a time to meet me on ICQ or sending it via email as has been done thus far. There will also be a few bonus downloads for those participating, including the CBC broadcast of the Regina show. I asked Dave about getting this on the official FTP, but he never did get back to me (though it was in the same email that I asked him to post the news), so apologies to anyone who was waiting on that. Anyone who'd like to upload a concert in exchange for the various goodies provided will be in my good books for at least a week, but if you've got nothing to send my way, no big deal. I don't really care for the trading scene anyway.
Finally, I will actually be gone for the Canada day weekend, so I won't be available until probably July 1 after this Friday. If there are problems, send me an email as soon as you can and then I know that you at least tried to get it into me before the deadline. If there is a major malfunction, we will push back the deadline as necessary, but only then - I just don't want anybody to be getting stressed because they couldn't connect all weekend or something.
Good luck on the final week, and I'm pleased to say with confidence that our version of His Kingly Cave will be completed on time. Oh, one more thing...
IF YOU HAVE SENT ME/_WHEN_ YOU SEND ME A COVER, PLEASE SEND A CORRESPONDING EMAIL (to my airman account) OR LABEL YOUR MP3 (in the ID3 tag as well) WITH YOUR ARTIST NAME SO THAT WE HAVE THE CREDIT DONE PROPERLY. MAKE THE EMAIL TITLE "FB-CD Cover Credit" SO THAT MY EMAIL CLIENT WILL PROPERLY SORT THE EMAIL. LABELLING THE MP3 IS THE PREFFERED METHOD.
Thanks, and good luck. |

the1: most people will tell you LAME. I'd probably agree. It's commandline, though, so you'll want to get a good GUI for it. Encode to 192Kbps. |

OK, I used LAME and EAC (Exact Audio Copier) at one point...I hear CDEX really good, and I think that's what I'll be using:
http://lame.sourceforge.net/ http://www.cdex.n3.net/
Go to the LAME page, there's a plethora of LAME programs...there's even a WinAmp plugin. |
