I do feel bad... but I live outside Saskatoon (a major centre) far enough that I didn't get full broadband until 3 years ago. Never going back.

So...did I miss something? Will "the best of" be selected as the "actual CD" or something? Uh oh, personal politics here... |

Alright, so another progress report:
His Kingly Cave is mostly finished, just trying to work out a part on the 'ol harpsichord. We might re-record the drums since we should be receiving 4 SM-57s in the next week or two to do some recording with. That ought to improve on the sound that we've been getting from a few vocal mics.
Oh, that reminds me, the most important thing is still not done: vocals. But we make slow progress.
Others? Let's keep people talking about what they're up to. And there are a whole whack of you I haven't even heard from yet...
Finally, you should all be happy to know that I've officially unleashed the Art team now that we are officially working on "You Ain't Me". Thanks Mr. Radiator and whoever suggested the original, "We Ain't He", and the rest of you for suggestions/voting. |

Oh, so now we're re-recording the drums... I see. You bastard. One night of pain and last verse screw ups wasn't enough for you? Do you want my blood? It's in me to give. |

That's too bad, BF, hope things go better this weekend... let me know.
As far as the topic of people being dropped from the compilation, I'd REALLY like to get an email from the following people (second request for many). I've emailed and asked for emails on the forum from all of you and have not received anything, so if I don't hear from you, I'm going to have to drop your name from our number. Please get back to me (either way) soon:
Leah MMBanner HoboBumSteak JoshIAm Ericr Glo39dm
Also, FranknWeezer, could you please email me so that I can confirm that you HAD in fact emailed me prior to May 1st? Thanks |

Firstly, I'd like to say hi to everyone, this is my first post.....it's about time I stopped observing and participated. I'm doing "Sir Rockaby", not my first choice by any means, but I'm really enjoying it, and the song is really growing on me. As for the debate regarding straight up cover or different, I'm finding that while I started out doing it straight up, it is starting to sound quite different. I'll hopefully get a lot done over this weekend, and start wrapping it up..... I've just read that there are designers already working on the artwork...is it too late to contribute, or is it "send in your artwork and best/favoroute gets chosen ?"
Retch.

I'm all finished with two versions of how you went so far, one being a elevator music soundin jazz tune with guitar bass drums piano(guitar covering the vocal melody) and a bit of a harder rock version not metal or anything but the album version was kinda tame, so not metal but more rock I guess. I also just watched mullholland drive. What a good movie. |

Men In Black Update.
The backing track's done. More or less. Well, more than less actually. Mostly more with just a little bit of less left.
So it's the vocals that are getting the doings done to them at the moment.
I've expanded the lyrics extrapolating from the few facts remaining as presented by Mister Black in his personal account of the Palmdale Incident. They are as follows:
= Start =
Men In Black ( Frank Black )
You believe it? You better. Go-getter to the letter me. I’ve got their number, see? And they’ve got mine. Just this side of disorder. Classic mental camcorder. Raw. Everything they did, I saw. Clear and crystalline.
Dinner plate. Dilate. Special guests and cosmic gapes. Slumber and cucumber shapes. They got it in the end. The ‘papers. I’m going to tell the world and Howard Stern. Sing to whom it may concern. The visitors ain’t our friends.
In the cool, cool night. And in the middle of the day.
I’m watching my back. I’m waiting my visitation from the Men In Black. Are they grey or is it my own nation?
>Breakdown<
It’s been a good year for beer and cheer. All throughout the summertime. Now I’m waiting for the door to chime and the ‘phone to ding-a-ling. A good year for fear. For fate I wait. The Silencers will come. They surely know I won’t be dumb. If they know anything.
>Bridge + Chorus<
Our little race. I don’t want to fail. So just in case I made you a copy and I put it in the mail.
>First Verse<
>Bridge + Chorus (Twice)<
= End =
So once the vocals are recorded and sitting pretty in the mix that should be it.
Peace, Love and Thud.

What is going on in here?? No progress reports? No happenings? No updates since May 27? COF, I hope I'm not spinning my wheels (and busting my arse) making this thaang. My progress on Skeleton Man:
1. Drum loops arranged 2. Guitar recorded 3. Guitar solo recorded 4. Horns (keyboard) recorded 5. Vocals recorded 6. Bass recording attempted (waiting for blisters to heal) 7. Mastering settings approximated (and sore back due to sitting on ass) 8. Many cigarettes smoked and beers drunk
I imagine the bass will come within a week. Then I'll spend another week mastering. Then, dear COF, I'll be e-mailing you a 192 bps MP3. I really can't wait to hear what the rest of yours sound like. I'm so excited. And I just can't hide it. -Chris

Awesome, I'm quite looking forward. Don't worry about the lack of progress reports and stuff like that - pretty much everyone is in contact with me via email these days and I estimate that we'll probably have about 70-80% of the participants with something to submit. I've even collected a few more songs in the past few weeks. I just don't want to nag everyone to death.
I'm also really looking forward to hearing everyone else's. The ones I have so far a pretty decent, so I figure that's a good sign. Mine hasn't moved much, mostly because we've been waiting on new equipment which came in on Wednesday, but we should be finishing it soon. I still have to figure out something for the harpsichord over the chorus (or maybe it just won't be there), and Speedy M has to nail his solo down <ahem> and ours will be ready to roll.
Those of you that are emailing me (and more importantly, are NOT), feel free to post here so that everybody knows what's going on. |

I have been using Cool Edit Pro 2 and Pro Tools. I am having problems when using the multitrack. When I mute a track and try to record another track the muted track bleeds into the recording. Does anyone know how to fix this? I tried reinstalling the drivers and that did not work. I use an Audigy 5.1 soundcard and I have this problem with both recording programs. It used to work fine and now it is not...what gives? HELP!!!!!
I got about half of my cover of The Vanishing Spies done and this problem started, please help! |

I'll assume you're muting tracks for a good reason and point to the dubious sound card selection. I don't think I've heard of an Audigy 5.1. There's the Live! 5.1 and the plain old Audigy, then there's Audigy 2 (with 24 bit recording, finally) but no Audigy 5.1.
http://www.soundblaster.com/products/audigy/compare.asp
I'm sure you don't want to hear this but there's no Creative product meant to record much of anything. It can play the hell out of wavs, mp3s, and gaming sounds. The recording drivers are crap, which is probably causing the bleed. I use M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (I have 3 of them, in fact) and I love the little bastards. The 2496 retails for about $150 US and the drivers are like buttah.
http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/audiophile.php
You probably don't want to buy another sound card so maybe you could try to install older Creative drivers (gasp!) used before you noticed the bleeding. Good Luck!!

For the moment we're using my Audigy 2 to record and while it's certainly not fantastic, it gets the job done passably for a project like this. I don't get any bleed either, nor did I when I had a Live 5.1 (Audigy 5.1 = Audigy, incidentally). But you are correct that there are much better sound cards out there for recording - it's just that he probably doesn't want to buy a new soundcard to record his cover and that the soundcard isn't the source of bleed anyway. Unless he had a multi-input soundcard, but even then... |

A recording update.
I decided to use the harpsichord only over the verses since it seemed to detract from the organ and french horn during the chorus, but I'm not sure it sounds as good as it did in my head, so we'll see what Speedy M thinks and scrap it or not. I also made a weak attempt at vocals, but this aspect continues to plague me. I thought of singing it ala Elvis (since it is about a visit to his home), but thought much better of it after. Especially since I can't pull it off without sounding really cornball. And of course, Speedy M continues to hammer away at a solo. |

Whoa, dude! Harpsichords, hammond organ, french horns! Good Christ, man! Do you have the sound of a kitchen sink in there? I really can't wait to hear this! Kingly Cave is pretty rockin' with those bizarre chords and all. I know exactly what you mean about sounding it out in your head. The recording never turns out the same, does it? I'd bet green money that all musicians have that problem with their records. That's why it's important to get the right producer.
Anyway, the blisters on my poor hand have healed early and I was able to pound out that bass line to Skeleton Man. It's been mastered as well; I'm happy with it but I want to get the opinion of a third party before I send it off. I learned that lesson the hard way.
My version of Skeleton Man is a funky reggae tune at 85 bmp coming in at 4:40.
Luck to all!! -Chris

Hammond organ? When did we get hammond organ on there? Apparently Dean is not telling me everything... I think I'll secretly sabotage the project, just for spite. |

OK, here is an update in regards to "Speedy Marie".
From what I thought, there was going to be an extra three people in on doing the song other than myself. A drummer, a bassist, and someone who would add backing vocals and some Hammond organ. When I first proposed this undertaking to the others, the energy/enthusiasm levels were through the roof. Now it appears that everyone is flaking out on me hardcore...unreturned calls, being stood up for practicing, and a general lack of interest have really begun to piss me off. Actually, these people have been pissing me off to the extent that if we don't get solid studio-time booked by the end of this weekend, I'm going to give them all a big "FUCK YOU" and just do it myself like I originally intended to. This would probably mean that it would not get done in a professional studio, but will be a home-recording done by yours truly. There is nothing wrong with that (I'm fairly proficient at that whole process, I record my stuff all the time) but then again it will not have the luster/professional sound of getting it done in a real studio with an array of professional recording equipment. Still, all that is better than the song not being done at all...which is what would happen if I let myself rely solely on my so-called associates and their schedules.
So, all things considered, "Speedy Marie" might just be a strictly bass, drums, guitars, and vocals affair pieced together by just me in true multi-track style. Not to say it will be any worse off of a cover for these reasons, just not what I was originally anticipating it to be. I will give you all an update once I know more...
Fuck flaky musicians. |

If Speedy M had given me a chance to reply <ahem>, I would mention that it was actually PsychicTwin (and I think one other person, which I was going to look up, but...) who is using a Hammond organ. I hate to disappoint you guys, but all these exotic and even not-so-exotic instruments are produced by my little keyboard and aren't the full-blown real deals. :( I wish they were, but I certainly didn't intend to give you that impression. That said, Speedy M IS indeed on track to sabatoge the song by not EVER getting a solo decided on. :) PT, I hear you about those 'flaky' musicians. :)
Seriously though, I'm sure your recording will be fine, just keep going with it, and maybe get them talking about what's going to be so great about it, and you might find they have a renewed interest, much more so than if you just ask them "So, when are we going to work on it?". Not that it's your fault at all, some people just need a little more pushing, unfortunately, which is what my job is all about. How many people have signed up in the initial buzz and done nothing so far? Enough. So you just do whatever you can, and certainly don't stress about it since it's just supposed to be a fun little project anyway and isn't meant to break up any long term friendships. Luckily, I've only been friends with Speedy M for 5 years or so, so that doesn't count. :) |

He lives WAY to close for my comfort. Technically outside the city, but I'd still like a larger buffer zone. Of course, our jam space being in his garage prevents me from saying any of this publicly.... |

Yet, here we are. We actually used to write music by him sending me a part and me adding something and sending it back, and so on. Our first few songs were written that way. The odour was much more pleasant that way, that's for sure. :)
Having a jam space set up is much nicer, I have to say. |

Just two guys talking about their organs . . . .
I'm nearly finished with I'll Be Blue. Just Bass and Vocals are left. I edited together some drums and strings from some other songs of mine to fit this song. The drums were recorded in a real studio to 2" analog and sound great. I hope you'll all be surprised by the grand scale of the thing. It's almost melodramatic.
