As Derek said, it wouldn't really make any sense for someone to try to sell their mix since it is available free from FB.net, but even if they did, it would not be sanctioned or done through FB.net so there shouldn't be any responsibility. It's kind of like holding a record label responsible because a CD they printed was ripped and distributed by some music pirate.

Hey Cult of Frank, I read mention of you normalizing the tracks and I wanted to offer my services as an audio engineer. I'd be willing to master the "chosen" songs before you make the final compilation (not all of them as it's a fair amount of work.) Normalizing is okay, but if something is really peaky, it won't change it's overall volume very much. For example, if a song is mostly around -10dB except a small section that peaks at 0dB, the normalizer won't change anything because the song as a whole is already peaking at 0. I could compress and limit the recordings and maybe even EQ them a bit. It's an extra step in the process, but let me know if you'd be interested. I have a broadband connection so the transfer time wouldn't be too bad.

Thanks for the offer, I may actually take you up on this if you are really interested. As long as the dynamics of the song aren't lost in the compress/limiting process (I'm not an audio engineer and don't really know what that even refers to). I suppose if they were I could just continue using the originals. |

I'm gonna' take a page out of what's-his-face-the-telegraph-guy:
ADDITIONS TO THE CD ARE NOW OFFICIALLY CLOSED - NO EXCEPTIONS. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY MORE SUBMISSIONS TO THE CD FOR ANY REASON.
If you really want to submit something, you can still put it on the FTP site. Just send me an email when you're finished it, and I'll put it with the rest that don't make the CD. But DO NOT contact me until it's done because, as you can imagine, I have my hands full dealing with the more than 50 people on this compilation already. Thanks to all for there interest, this is the second and final official close of phase 1. Now it's time to make some music.
Also, the final track list is posted. If you are on there and you don't want to be, if you are on there and have not emailed me, or if you are on there as a TBA... <ahem> echo park, hobobumsteak, get a hold of me as soon as possible. I'm going to remove both TBA's from the compilation if I don't hear from them in the next few days. |

Hey where is everyone's progress report on their cover song? With over 50 contributors you think this thread would be overflowing.

I don't know, Dean. Do ya really think everyone with their big toe in the door is hip to the existence/activity of this thread? I mean, you should at least email the obviously serious folks (El Barto, AfC, etc.). Or I could. Just say the word. |

Heh... Chris, the threatening part of that sentence was only directed at two people who have actually been in contact with me via email and then stopped responding to subsequent ones. The subtext of the message was please return my emails, since everyone on there has received an email from me or has no address I can mail to, but I can't expect you to know that. I'm really quite a bit more benevolent than I pretend to be. :)
And yes, I was intending to ask the same thing... where ARE those progress reports? |

Line-up has been finalized, and we will be recording soon. Playing it pretty much straight up, but with an angle.. have fun everyone! |

The line-up for me has been finalized as well...I will be doing guitar/vocals, my friend Jessica will be adding Hammond organ/vocals/& probably guitar, and a fucking excellent drummer called Viraj will be pounding the skins for Speedy Marie.
Our recording session is imminent...it is hard to move this along as fast as I would like to because I'm working with two collaborators with varying schedules and commitments outside of this project. But I will be damned if it isn't done and good. So that's my update! |

My progress report is that my song's done. Well, almost, sort of. I recorded 'I Need Peace' a couple years ago but I screwed up the drums on it. In the process of cleaning this up a bit for the comp. Recorded on a roland vs840 with a strat thru a pod. Couple guitars, bass, and vocal all played straight up and fairly true to the original in vibe if not the exact notes. If I cant fix the drums well enough, I'm tempted to redo from scratch but this time I'll use a click track or something so I can line up my stuff easier.

It's good to know you've tried contacting everyone who hasn't yet provided confirmation. I just want you to keep in mind that people involved in this project don't necessarily have schedules conducive to consistently efficient communication via email. Also, I originally signed up for this project without the understanding that I would have to confirm my involvement in it at a later date. The same probably goes for others, some of whom may still not know of this requirement. No bad vibes are intended; I'm just playing the part of squeaky wheel. |

Progress report #1: Recording begins late next week. Songs: Brackish Boy (LOUD full band version) and Two Reelers. I'm playing all the instruments (except for possible horn parts on Two Reelers). The recording will be done on a PC equipped with an eight-channel soundcard. Expect a good number of overdubs. |

Progress! (I think that's what it's called.) Have been reading. Researching. UFOs. MIBs. Silencers and what not. Lost a Chorus but added a couple of Bridges. Then added another Chorus to replace the one that went missing. (Abducted by aliens, I think.) Have included samples from the preamble to the first song from Slims gig. So I've got Black on the track. Ain't I clever. The lyrics, in my opinion, are somewhat underwritten. So room for expansion there. Especially at 117 BPM. The words hardly full up the verse at Mr Black speed. But then again: "Brevity is the soul of wit" - William Shatner. (Or William Shakespeare. One or t'other. I always get those two mixed up.) Anyroad, it is what it is. But so is everything. Peace. |

I started a cover of "Big Red" and so far have finished a big Beach Boys intro with a stack of about 15 tracks of vocals. I'm planning on doing everything myself and since I have no drums, I'm going to edit the drums from a different song (one of my own) that's the same tempo as "I'll Be Blue". Should sound fine. I started out making a "Sound-Alike" but I think I'm going to fuck with the style a bit more.
Bet on me not being finished until minutes before the deadline.

To Cult of Frank, I just found this thread TODAY. Seems like I haven't been in the tabs section in awhile (I stay in the top five mostly and never hit the fb.net front page, either). Anyway, that's all to say that's why I never responded to your post atop this page about what song I would like to record. I realize you've cut off new folks, but since I had expressed interest in recording Pie in the Sky originally, I'd still like to do it, since no one else is. Sorry I missed out on the thread, but I'd like to be included if you can make an exception for me.

Ok so seriously, I wonder how many of these 56 contributors are actually gonna follow through. I imagine at least 5 or so will end up dropping out before the dead line. So I say let miguel and franknweezer join on. Why exactly was there a deadline for signing up? I can see why there should be a deadline for finishing the song, but as for signing up, I don't know... cult of frank and his deadlines. lol. Sorry if I'm giving off negative vibes, guess I'm laid back about stuff like this.
I am curious to see how many of the 56 will actually complete their songs. Who knows how many will bail

Fer real? Yeah the number of contributors who do follow through will be interesting. I've been involved with collaborations before and it's amazing how many people sign up but don't finish.. or dissappear completely. |

The deadline was created:
a) "so this project can end" - thanks, Dave, I'm glad I have one supporter. b) To get people who were interested started on working on it and deciding on a song. c) To continue to motivate people as to some sort of final goal.
If I don't honour my deadlines at least a little bit, they become meaningless, and the goals for the project are out the window. I've run countless large projects, some spanning over a year in magnitude where we worked many hours a week and just barely made it, and whether you believe/trust me or not, this is what works. It is very true that we will lose people by the wayside as we go, but it's not fair to those who pushed and even panicked to choose a song and get on board for me to just let anyone slip later for all eternity.
I am not a harsh person, though since none of you know me, you'll have to once again take my word for it, but with a project like this, goals need to exist (in our case, these are deadlines with a few rules), and someone has to give the project direction, motivation, and energy. As I've heard countless times, this idea has been tried again and again and has failed repeatedly. It's my job to make it succeed, and I do take that seriously. I plan to have a CD of great covers by the ides of July, available to all you, and I'm doing what I feel is necessary to accomplish this.
I know that many have differing opinions on how this is best accomplished, but for now, I'm doing things the way I said I was going to do them from day 1, and that's it. If you have problems with this, by all means, email me and we'll discuss it there. I'm not on board to be criticized for every decision I make on behalf of bringing this CD to completion, I'm not being paid for this or benefiting in any way other than that I'll have a copy of some awesome FB covers when I'm done. I'm doing it for fun, and being undermined every time I try to move the project forward is seriously making me wonder why I'm doing it in the first place.
Besides, 56 people is a heck of a lot of people to keep track of and talk with.
Miguel, again, you're welcome to contribute, but unless it's so amazing that it would be a sin to not include it on the CD, it won't make the cut. Sorry that you didn't make the deadline, but it's inevitable that when there is a deadline, some won't make it. FranknWeezer, I seem to recall you contacting me regarding Pie in the Sky, I'll look into it tomorrow, and if I can find some old correspondence (or you can dig it up - that'd be great) I'll sign you up too.
I'm not offended by anyone, and I understand the suggestions and that they are of good intention (and even that I can be wrong), but please just give me a little bit of credit. That's all I'm asking for. We need to move this forward or, like a car in neutral, it won't go anywhere. That's the last I'm saying on the topic, this discussion explains my motivations for all past, present, and future CD-compilation decisions. Rest assured that I have thought all my decisions through and am doing it with the best of intentions as well. Sorry if I went on a rant. |
