Le Bostonien et néo-Californien Frank Black, alias Charles Thompson, a pris la direction du sud des États-Unis pour réaliser son disque et il a eu brigrement raison. Enregistré à Nashville, dans les studios de Dan Penn, Honeycomb s’est ainsi retrouvé paré de couleurs soul et country du meilleur teint. Il s’agit d’un album de pur rock’n’roll, comme on en fait peu, malheureusement. L’approche du genre adoptée est classique, en ce sens qu’elle ne concède rien à un quelconque effet de mode. Sans sombrer non plus dans l’académisme et le passéisme. Black et ses musiciens sont allés au plus près de la vérité du genre. Un vrai prodige. Le choix du producteur est pour beaucoup dans la réussite de ce beau disque. Quasiment inconnu en France, Dan Penn jouit pourtant d’une très haute considération dans son pays. En activité depuis près de cinquante ans, il a écrit quelques grandes pages du rock et de la soul, notamment en ayant eu la bonne idée d’être un des piliers des fameux studios de Muscle Shoals. À son actif, on compte des hits comme Dark end of the street repris ici. Comme dans un rêve, Frank Black a vu se joindre à lui une poignée d’autres héros des temps passés tels que le complice de Penn, « Spooner » Oldham (le solo d’orgue sur When a man loves a woman de Percy Sledge, c’est lui) et Steve Cropper qui a joué pour toutes les stars du label Stax (la partie de guitare de Dock of the bay d’Otis Redding, cela vous dit-il quelque chose ?). Excusez du peu ! Mais tout cela ne mènerait pas à grand-chose si Franck Black n’était pas lui-même une immense figure du rock. Compositeur, auteur, chanteur et guitariste des Pixies, il a en une demi-décennie écrit quantité de chefs-d’œuvre impérissables. Nettement moins furieux que dans les années 1980, l’ancien punk a cependant gardé intact son talent de mélodiste. C’est bien simple : il n’y a rien à retrancher de cet album. Ce dernier est lumineux, pas brillant. Il se savoure. À chaque écoute, on en découvre les subtilités cachées, on est frappé par la délicatesse des chansons et des interprètes. Un peu bousculé par ses fans et la critique pendant la quinzaine d’années de travail en solo qui a suivi la séparation des Pixies (reformés en 2004 pour une tournée), Franck Black a finalement réussi à retrouver l’équilibre.

Frank Black est mort, vive Frank Black. L'éternel "adolescent de l'année" n'est plus. "Honeycomb" est une véritable renaissance pour un artiste qu'on sentait un peu au fond du trou (malgré la reformation sans doute financièrement juteuse des Pixies). Cet album n'est en fin de compte que le quatrième album solo de Frank Black si on écarte sa collaboration plus ou moins réussie avec les Catholics. Et de l'eau a coulé sous les ponts depuis la séparation des Pixies. Des trombes d'eau, car ceux qui trouveront des similitudes entre "Trompe Le Monde" et "Honeycomb" ne peuvent qu'être malhonnêtes. Le gros Frank flirte plus que jamais vers la country. Alors terminé les petites brûlots punk/pop qui commençaient plutôt à sentir le réchauffé, voire le cramé, ces derniers temps. Place dorénavant à une sereine country. Un choix apparemment judicieux car rarement sa voix n'a été d'une telle qualité. Il semblerait donc que Black ait pris une direction de carrière assez différente mais bien plus adéquate à ses envies et ses aptitudes actuelles.
Pour réaliser "Honeycomb", Charles Thompson s'est offert les services de célèbres musiciens soul et country (Steve Cropper, Buddy Miller, Reggie Young...) et d'un producteur au tableau de chasse impressionnant (Robert Plant. B.B King...). L'album comporte quatorze titres dont trois reprises de standards américains: "Dark End Of The Street" (de Dan Penn et Chips Moman), "Song Of The Shrimp" (de Roy Bennet et Sid Tepper) et une autre tirée d'un film dans lequel jouait Elvis, "Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove" (de Doug Sahm). Trois covers qui ne déparent pas l'atmosphère de fond de saloon de cet album. Mais Black ne peut étouffer complètement son passé de rocker, et ses morceaux ont alors un faux air de Silver Jews ("Sing For Joy"). On sait pourtant que Black et Berman sont loin d'être des grands potes... Un excellent album donc, dont la palme doit être attribué au titre éponyme de l'album "Honeycomb", son meilleur morceau depuis au moins 10 ans.
Les Pixies s'étaient vus attribuer l'an passé le titre de "Reformation de l'Année". En 2005, Frank Black est le meilleur postulant au titre de "Ressuscité de l'Année".

The Pixies had see attributed themselves the year passed the title of "Reformation of the year". In 2005, Frank Black is the better one applying to the title of "Revived of the year".
