FB's supposed to be thinkin' about that also next time around, correct? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it based on some of the articles and interviews I've read. Song titles are great: Punks in the Beerlight...K Hole!?!...sounds promising.

excellent reviews everyone. I have to say that to me, organising the order or a compilation is almost as important as determining the tracks to be included. and for me takes almost as long. i find that a tracklisting can make or break an album, and for a compilation of different artists this is even more important because the songs don't automatically have any connection - so you have to make one. otherwise it's just a collection of ramdom tracks, like hitting random on your mp3 player, which while is great if you're familiar with all the artists, is tricky to get any connection with the songs if you don't.
just my thoughts anyways.

Brian, I'm all set to mail you some cold hard cash so I can get my hands on some mixes eventually.

Too late to post reviews of Frog's mix I suppose. Oh well, maybe he'll see it when he comes back.
Faves: Big Audio Dynamite, J&MC, Polonsky, Hersh Least faves: Lisa Gerrard, Roadrunners, Calvin Russell, Iggy+Goran Bregovic Lots of growers in this mix, mainly Kristin Hersh, YLT, Shane McGowan... I already knew most of the bands featured but some of them by name only, so it was nice to finally listen to them. I already bought B.A.D.'s first album, their 2 songs really were the standout tracks of the mix. The intense pro-Hersh lobbying I'm facing on this forum has finally won me over, I've liked all the songs people have put on their CDs. On the "less great" side, I've never liked DcD and the Lisa Gerrard solo track didn't interest me either. And both Iggy and Goran Bregovic have done much better things than this song. The rest is pretty good on the whole.

Frog Mix:
Favs: "Spain" - Kristin Hersh, "15th Brigade" - Joe Strummer, "Tighten Up Vol. 88" - Big Audio Dynamite Least Favs: "Mexican Funeral in Paris" - Shane MacGowan, "The Fun Never Stops" - Shoulders, "Beat Around the Bush" - Roadrunners Comments: As it is so many times, vocals were the deal breakers on a bunch of these songs. I felt really sad for Shane MacGowan while listening to his track - oh how the mighty has fallen. On a positive note though, "Rush" has been a favorite of mine for some time, so it was great to hear some BAD on here, and i always enjoy the J&MC. A really interesting assortment of tunes Frogger.

My mix is up. Please someone tell me whether it works or not. It's first time I've posted something on FTP and the mix was done on a Mac but posted on a PC.
Also, the last two songs probably aren't going to fit on the CD. Sorry about that. Perhaps just drop them if it's too much hassle.
I'm really enjoying the other mixes. Ive only gotten to list to frog's once. |

Yep, same here darwin, only the last two tracks (13 & 14) and the notes seem to be there. The rest look like shortcuts or something.

Crap. I'll fix it somehow.
My brief frog review - I loved it.
Bests: BAD and Strummer, Hersh, Shoulder (we need more horns in Rock-n-Roll), Firewater, Sweet 75, and Kat Onoma (reminds me of Roky Erickson).
Not so hot: Lisa Gerrard, MacGown (like the music, hate the vocals), Iggy Pop (a bad marriage) |

saved from page 2...
listening to darwin's right now. more vocal jazz than i expected (neither a good or bad judgement, just a statement). i personally divided up the mix into 2 discs for work consumption. tracks 1-8 disc i and tracks 9-14 for disc ii.
and 5 of the 14 tracks are the title tracks off of records. odd...

It's going pretty bad actually. Everyone here has lame taste, we've already had Crazy Frog twice.

looking forward to it! scott, your mixes always push me to the limit in a good way - i always LOVE some tracks, HATE some others and a few are usually growers. your mixes definetely elicit lots of reactions from me - rarely am i "eh" about them.

DARWIN REVIEW:
Favs: Just about every track Least Favs: Ella, just b/c of the scat parts Comments: Bravo. An excellent jazz mix. I consider myself a jazz fan and so i appreciate a lot of the stuff on here. I really need to get some Modern Jazz Quartet and Monk stuff - i'm sadly lacking in those two departments. The only track that really doesn't do it for me is the Ella track, because i really have no tolerance for scat-style vocals. Besides that, this mix is incredible.

If you hate scat, it's a good thing I didn't put on any Mel Torme. I like Mel Torme, the velvet fog. |

Me too, my daughter is named after the woman and he slams her. But, he does earn points back by acknowledging the brillance of Monk (and for being the only one so far to review my mix). |

That woman was an American hero. That's a term that gets tossed around a lot, but, jeez, she was scatting all the way till the end, even after they amputated her legs. Brian, you gotta give some props to Ella Fitzgerald, man.

i have nothing against ella, i just don't care for her WHEN she scats. the rest of the time i think she is lovely, and i think that she is a great figure of American music.

I'm still digesting darwin's mix,it's pretty far off my normal radar. However, preliminary reports suggest that my wife loves it and it was worth it if only for the brownie points.
Frog's mix:
There was quite a spread here, some I'd heard of, some not. I was really disappointed with B.A.D. I have some fond memories of them, but really hated their first song. In fact my two least enjoyable tracks of the mix were that and the one before it, Roadrunners. I've got the Kristin Hersh track, and love it, so it is probably my favourite from the bunch, but the other tracks that grabbed me were Kat Onoma, Yo La Tengo and The Walkabouts. Kat Onoma sounds a bit gothic, and took me back to darkened nights in the student union with dry ice and back-combed hair. Those were the days. Yo La Tengo I've been meaning to check out for a while, and this reinforces it, whilst The Walkabouts pander to my country leanings at times.
In summary:
Tricks - B.A.D and Roadrunner
Treats - Kat Onoma, Kristin Hersh, Yo La Tengo and The Walkabouts
Pumpkins (could swing either way) - Sleater-Kinney and Sweet 75
That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.
