Which files? The only m4a one I can see is Mazzy Star. Are there some in Scott's mix?

Not that I know of.

Frog's Mix

Great mix! Plenty of artists I'd heard or heard of, but the only songs I was familiar with were "Rush" and "Oral Health" (Only knew of Sweet 75 'cosa Shudder to Think's Adam Wade being involved)

I've never given the Jesus and Mary Chain a fair shot. The two tracks here are wonderful. I especially like having "I Hate Rock and Roll" as an opener.

Pinback were a pleasant surprise. I caught myself whistling the tune at work the other day, which must have been painful to listen to.

I think I agree with most folks so far re: the Iggy Pop tune. Seems a low-point on the disc. However the Shoulders track really grew on me.

Favs: I Hate Rock and Roll, Prog, The Fun Never Stops, Stockholm Syndrome
Not so Favs: Don't Talk Like, TV Screen, The Human Game

Speaking of Sweet 75..

Does anyone know where I might find more of singer/spoken word artist Yva Las Vegas?

All I can find online is this. Really grabbed my interest. I'd love to hear more.

I considered doing a generic review of Frog's mix:
It started off well. Had never heard the first few tracks, but they are really growing on me. Around the middle, some of them were throw aways in my opinion. Then, really grabbed me by the balls at the end. Great mix. Really loving it.
Seeing as I have heard none of the mixes yet, that was just a practice review for when I get around to sending money to Brian to have him be so kind as to burn the mixes and send them to me. Anyway, I just wanted to contribute to the thread, even in a meaningless and superficial way. Back to whatever you were doing before.

REVIEW - darwin:
it doesn't seem right to make a "faves/least faves" list for that one; Count Basie would end up as my "least fave" and it sounds weird. You made an excellent selection, darwin. Highlights were: the 2 intro tracks by Duke Ellington, amazing; Gillespie's Manteca, really impressive; Armstrong's St James Infirmary; Coltrane obviously, he's never failed me; Monk, Blakey; and the Modern Jazz Quartet tune. Basically, the whole CD... If I erally want to pick the "less great" tunes, I'm not a fan of the Count Basie & Joe Williams song, it's good but doesn't do much to me. I usually love Basie's work though. Also, the first Miles track is a bit average, and On The Sunny Side Of The Street is just OK but it's saved by the fantastic sung part at the end.
It was nice to have a bunch of tracks I've played a lot back when I played jazz (the usual standards, Caravan, Moanin, Sunny Side...). Lately (since the demise of my rock band) I've been thinking of looking for some guys to play jazz with; I'd love to play some small clubs in the Quartier Latin, that sounds so cool... So if I ever decide myself and join a band, well you'll have played a small part in my decision. Thanks for that.

2 more things: first, there will be a little bit of jazz on my mix too, hope you'll like it. 2nd, I don't really follow what's being released in jazz (too many records to buy already), but I recently heard and loved this record:

http://www.fnac.com/Shelf/article.asp?PRID=1688180&OrderInSession=1&Mn=3&Mu=-13&SID=954267a2-74aa-0dfd-b61e-6ed082e4a76d&TTL=271020051719&Origin=FnacAff&Ra=-28&To=0&Nu=1&UID=191012455-2204-3630-DDA0-8483B44006C5&Fr=0

It's an album by the Belmondo brothers (fantastic French musicians) with Yusef Lateef, of jazz heavily influenced by early 20th century classical music, and the result is quite stunning. Might be a bit hard to find in the USA but I strongly recommend you to have a listen.

No, it's from a 50 Ft Wave song. Blame Cheeseman for forcing me to listen to them and fall in love with the record.

darwin's Mix

I've given this mix a few listens. I know a bit about jazz, but have never really been much of a fan (the only artist I've really pursued is Mingus)

I really liked "Django." Very mellow and, um, unpretentious. Can't very well say the same about the Coltrane track. Coltrane, for whatever virtuosity he may be known for, seems hurried and completely typical of what you'd expect "jazz" to sound like. Busy and uninteresting.

"Brilliant Corners" keeps a great pace and (to me) displays both the musicians skill and their respect towards restraint and subtlety.

I'd heard "Caravan" before, and love it for approx. the same reasons I liked "Brilliant Corners"

The vocal tracks failed to really draw me in at all.

-

The mix will stay in the car for a while. I think the latter half of the disc will be getting the most play, though. The first half, with it's emphasis on vocals, still seems a bit of a chore.

a bit late, but anyway:
Review of Frog & Roll.

a very nice comp, and one which has grown on me.
i was very keen on hearing pinback as i'd heard alot about them, but i was kind of underwhelmed by the track. the vocals kind of annoyed me.
but then again the sweet 75 track really suprised me. i hadn't expected them to be any good. oh well, you live and learn.
i also quite enjoyed the kat onoma track in an 80's kind of way.
also loved the kristin hersh tune and the yo la tengo, but i'm hugwe fans anyways. the sleater-kinney track selection suprised me only cause that one's never been a favourite of mine.

least favs: Shane MacGowen, Iggy Pop and both Big Audio Dynamites..

and i thought the jesus and mary chain bookends worked very well

OBW Mix Review:

Favs: "Bird Song" - The Holy Modal Rollers, "Paperhouse" - Can, "Sleep Song" - Takako Minekawa, "Down In The Park" - Gary Numan, "You Got Me" - Glenn Branca
Least Favs: "Blue Girls" - Family Fodder
Comments: This was the least-polarizing of OBW's mixes, i believe. I like the use of 'sounds' between songs, as it breaks things up a bit, but i feel that many of the less structured tracks are simple not memorable. However, that doesn't make them unpleasant, just unspectacular. I really enjoyed this mix quite a bit, especially the HMRs and the instrumental "Down in the Park" - any more info on either of these Scott?

And thanks again for FTPing us

And does anyone know what is up with Nicole? I emailed her and still nothing...

REVIEW - ObfuscateByWill:
Faves: Holy Modal Rounders, Chrome, Can, Gary Numan, Zoviet France, Eno
Least faves: Atom Heart, Syd Barrett
Your CD is funny. At first listen it sounded like a bunch of tracks thrown together without any guiding line, songs that were great separately but didn't flow at all. And now I'm loving how it all segues. You're great at adding short songs/dialogs/sounds that make perfectly sense. As always with your CDs (well it's only the 2nd one I get but I've been checking out the tracklistings), this one's full of bands I've been meaning to check out but haven't had the time to (I have an excuse! In 1980 I was barely born). So although I've known them by name for a while, I really discovered and loved Can, Chrome, Cabaret Voltaire, Zoviet France and the like. I didn't know Down in the Park was a Numan song, actually I knew the Foo Fighters cover from the X Files OST and was amazed they had managed to write a great song... There were a bunch of names I didn't know and had to check in allmusic, among these I loved the Holy Modal Rounders. I didn't hate anything really. The track I liked least was Atom Heart. For some reason, although I'm a self-proclaimed "electronic music fan", I've never enjoyed much electronica or laptop music or whatever you call it. I respect Uwe Schmidt though and I like some other things he's done under some of his aliases. This year's 'Acid Evolution 1988-2003' album he's done on Logistic Records is pretty crazy.
To conclude, the HMR, Chrome, Can and Numan are now on my wishlist (although I've read the songs you chosed don't seem to be really representative of the bands' general sound). Oh yeah, about Can, I thought they were full of keyboards and it's not the case of this track, am I wrong about them?

Thanks for reminding me Brian.

I haven't been on the forums for the better part of a month, due to an excessive amount of schoolwork. I don't feel right uploading a mix until I've given a proper review to all of those that I've missed. My mix is ready, and I'll put it up as soon as you are all ready for it.

I'm sorry to the rest of you who have been putting a lot of time and effort into mixing/reviewing. As soon as I have some more free time, I'll give everyone my two cents on their mixes.

Brian, when should I put mine up?

The Holy Modal Rounders were out of NYC. Same area that spawned the Fugs (similar in style) and the Velvet Underground. "Bird Song" was featured on the Easy Rider soundtrack, which is where I first learned of them.

The version of "Down In The Park," I included was a sort-of bare-bones bonus track on a reissue of Numan's Telekon album. The album version is excellent, a true classic, and is featured on the Tubeway Army album, Replicas.

-

I don't know a lot about Can. I have their first four albums and don't hear anything keyboardy about them. "Paperhouse," is from Tago Mago.

The Chrome track is a bit different from their typical material. Much poppier. I think a track of theirs I included in my last mix, "TV As Eyes," is probably more representative.

-

I'm glad you've enjoyed my mix and appreciate the time you two took in reviewing it.
