Review - kathryn's mix: Faves: GbV, Jim Carroll, Magazine, BSS, Arcade Fire Least faves: Of Montreal, Stellastarr Very different mix from the previous one. I regret that Bob Mould disappeared instead of REM, but that said, it's a great mix. I loved the Jim Carroll song (never heard of him before) but I'll check out his works (TRIVIA: Jon "Tivo" Tiven played in the Jim Carroll band. Is that what Frank meant by "NYC punk scene from the 80s"?). Interpol, 9 Black Alps and Bloc Party were very good but not really enough to make me want to go further. The Of Montreal song irritates me, and I don't like the Stellastar singer's voice, although I've heard other songs by them that I liked. Oh, and I hate bands with non-alphanumeric characters in their names so that didn't help. Stellastarr*, GY!BE, Therapy!, dEUS (different case but why the hell do they keep writing their name like this?)... But anyway, that makes 3 or 4 so-so songs in an otherwise great tracklist. GbV are as good as ever, Magazine rulez, and after all these years I'm still in love with the amazing Home Sandoval.

Review - Benji's mix
Three out of five Franks.
-
Favorites: Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mount Zion, Dirty Three Least Favorites: Cat Power, Fur Patrol, Neko Case
I'm skipping around on this mix quite a bit. There's a decent flow, but since I know benji used songs that had some emotional impact on him I'm having a hard time, um, relating to it. The tracks chosen seem to range from solid (Three Wheels) to fairly weak (Beautiful / which reminds me of Tracy Bonham).
I enjoyed the Silver Mt. Zion track quite a bit. I will finally go about grabbing one of their albums.
I hadn't given Neko Case any play before. I think she'd been featured on fb.net mixes before, but she did not and has not really gained my interest at all.
Familiar with the rest of the artists featured. Good selections, but it somehow falls short of the last mix I got from benji (which was fantastic)

scott, thanks for the review. can i ask a question: are you a fan of female singers? i just ask cause since all 3 least favs were chicks, was it just that the songs i selected did nothing for you, or is it the female voice overall? very pleased that you like the D3 track - was a reject of ocean songs, but i just find it an amazing tune...
and thanks for the comment on my previous mix. i spent about 2 years compiling that one, so i'm glad i got it right.....

Woah Benji. I'm listening to your mix for the third time, but this is the first time I've ever really paid it very close attention.
I just noticed that the last track has a striking similarity to material by the Silver Jews. Its uncanny. If you don't know them, you'll hear them in my mix.
I'll be reviewing your whole mix in a few days, once I've completely absorbed it.

Benji Mix Review:
Favorites: A Silver Mt. Zion, Mogwai, Micah P. Hinson, Johnny Cash Last Favorites: None! (If I had to choose, probably Fur Patrol. Just jumping on the bandwagon, I guess)
I couldn't pick a least favorite honestly. Your mix has a great flow, like Brian said. I'm so glad you included a few bands I'd always meant to check out but hadn't. I really like the ASMZ track. Which full length do you reccomend?
And I downloaded Frog's. To be listened to as soon as I finish my history studying.

Benji Mix
Yes, bonus points for the Canadian content! I’ve listened to it a few times. Really like the female tracks. Haven’t heard many of these artists before so I will be listening to much more. Seems to be a fair amount of sad songs so I will give it sad faces out of 5.
Here’s my favorites so far: neko, throwing muses, Kristin hersh, Johnny cash.
biggest disappointment: no acdc to represent the ausie tracks!

i'd start off with Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upwards, which was the one that the song on the mix is off. it's my favourite, along with He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corners of Our Rooms which was their first one. i've got their other newer ones, but haven't actually listened to them much - mainly cause just ain't got time.
and i'm very pleased with the positive response for my mix. it's great to hear that there's artists which have perked up people ears, which is the whole purpose of this exercise. funny how everyone has picked the same least fav track...poor fur patrol.

I can understand that. Reading the album's title alone is time consuming...

Review of Benji's mix
This kind of fits in with a lot of what I'm enjoying at the moment. I have a thing for female vocalists just now with a lot of male singers sounding sub-standard. Some of it was familiar (Hersh, Low) and I've been listening to some Cat Power recently, though not this track.
Favourites: Sigur Ros, Dirty Three, Cat Power Failures: Johnny Cash, A Silver Mount Zion
The Sigur Ros track surprised me, my preconceptions were wrong, and it's a great song. Despite there being a folk/country feel to the mix Johnny Cash just didn't seem to fit and The Mogwai & BHP songs just seemed to wash over me for some reason (though not in a bad way).
I'll probably check out more Sigur Ros & Cat Power as a result and enjoyed the mix a lot.

Sorry-signed off right away last night. I put some songs from American Water (People & Blue Arrangements) on my last mix, and had one or two that I am choosing from this time. But you go right ahead if you are ready! And maybe I'll have some new Berman from which to choose soon anyway.

nothing wrong with having the same artist on 2 different mixes. Chances are thin the same song will appear twice (though it did happen last time).
My mix is almost ready by the way and I'm supposed to deliver it on Nov. 28th, so if anyone lacks time to finish his and wants to swap, I can upload it earlier.

Review - benji's mix: Faves: Throwing Muses, Dirty 3, Neko Case, Micah P Hinson Least faves: GYBE, Sigur Ros, BHP, Mogwai Despite numerous attempts by various forum members to convert me, I'm completely indifferent to the whole post-rock genre. I tried to get into it at the beginning when Lift Yr Skinny Fists was released, but I never felt like going further. So didn't really care for the tracks by GYBE, Sigur Ros, BHP & Mogwai that you put on your mix. However, I was quite pleasantly surprised by the ASMZ song. I thought they were an all-instrumental band like the other Constellation stuff I've heard. Do they sing on most of their songs or is it just on that one? Anyway I liked it. On the rest of the CD, the TM song is growing on me (as 50Ft Wave recently did), so it won't be long before I turn into a Kristin Hersh fan. Micah P Hinson sounds like a more produced and less autistic Smog, and I love Smog. Neko Case has a great voice, I didn't know she sang country music, having only heard of her by name. Cat Power, Cash and the Fur Patrol were all good. The Dirty 3 track reminds me a lot of Carla Bozulich's impros, I liked that. On the whole I'm impressed by the fact that you managed to make a very consistent mix which flows beautifully, something I've never been able to do (the one I'm currently doing being the worst of all). I gotta choose the right time to listen to your CD cause it's so sad, but it's a good one. In fu's scale it would get 3 silly icons out of 5.

Thanks Sir Rock-Very nice offer. I believe it comes out Tuesday, so I'm going to run down to my local record store and pick up a genuine copy fresh off the presses. With my incomprehensibly slow internet connection, any other method of acquiring it from you would not yield it soon enough. Can't wait to hear it.

You're in for a real big treat.
Be prepared for a new Berman sound though. Big departure from his later work.
