My review of kathryn's mix. I liked it. I don't know if I'll go out and buy anything, but I'm interested to hear more Nine Black Alps and Magazine.
Favorites: Magazine's song (are they consistently that catchy?), Jim Carroll (even though the song seems to be repeated twice) {Laurie Anderson and that song is a long time favorite of mine}
Not so much: Oslo in Summertime |

Kathryn's Mix:
Favorite Tracks: Oslo In The Summertime, Headlights Look Like Diamonds, Almost Crimes, I've Owned You For Centuries.
Its too bad that my favorite tracks are all by bands that I happen to already be quite fond of. Except for the Bob Pollard. I've been meaning to check him out for a long time, and I'm glad you convinced me to.
Least Favorite: Fade Into You and People Who Died
Just didn't really do much for me. Don't like picking least favorites, but you've got to.
Fun mix. Inspired me to get out and finish mine (which I did).

Very cool. By the way, Scott, I never received your mix from the "genre-specific" swap. Would you mind uploading it on the ftp?

FTP-tried it and it kicked my slow dial up butt. Brian, I'll email you about what options us non FTP'ers have for getting copies (I assume it will be large cash and liquor shipments to you, but I'll just confirm that).

My review of kathryn's mix.
There were only a few artists on there that I'd heard previously (REM and Arcade Fire mostly), with NYC being the only song I'd heard (albeit the Interpol version), so it was fresh to these ears.
I was looking forward to hearing Interpol and Magazine the most, but strangely they ended up being the weakest tracks on the mix for me, maybe because I had some expectations. The only track I enjoyed less than those was the Laurie Anderson one.
I loved Stellastarr* and the Jim Carroll Band, and will certainly look into more Stellstarr* stuff. My favourite track though, was Mazzy Star. Great song. I'm in love with female singers at the moment, so this may have caught me at the right time, but for me, it was the stand-out track.
As a whole though, it was pretty good, I enjoyed listening to it, and will again.

here’s my review of kathryn’s cd. i was away last week so i finally got a chance to spin this one several times. i will using the fuman smiley face rating scale . out of a possible 5 happy faces i give kathry’s cd mix an outstanding ! including some canadian artists like arcade fire and broken social scene definitely help! plus bonus for being the first to upload to the ftp site for cdswapmix#5! but she loses a smiley for putting on a mp4 file !
very nice intro- “bow to the letter” gave me chills down my spine. never heard this one before. i have always liked REM but don’t know much about patti smith. i love her voice. i have a song of her’s off of the Tibetan Freedom Concert. definitely have to check out more of her material. interpol- fan and haven’t heard of “direction”- really like it. always been meaning to check out the series 6 feet under but have yet to do so. have arcade fire’s “cold wind” from the same soundtrack which i really enjoy. love “headlights look like diamonds”. originally had on my cdswapmix#5 cd and since chose to take it off due to the fbnet cdswap copyright laws! previously haven’t heard of nine black alps, of montreal, laurie anderson, magazine- initially sounds intriguing. i will need to listen to a few more weeks before I provide an opinion. but coming from a person who enjoys the music of frank i’m sure it’s top notch! like the bob pollard and gbv tunes. saw gbv on austin city limits a while back and was very impressed. i need a top 10-20 list of top songs so i can download. i know artists like this are extremely talented and respected but i find it takes a real effort to go through their work since they have so many albums. people who died is a great track and i have recently started to listen to bloc party who i enjoy. overall, for me, it had a nice mix of bands i had previously heard of and bands I didn’t know existed. very nice flow and a nice Canadian touch to the mix, eh!

right, am commencing uploading now. had to turn off my antivirus/internet security software cause it was having a spaz and causing me not to be able to log on, but seems to be working fine now. so it'll take a wee while to upload cause my speed's very slow for uploading.
but yeah. enjoy.

ok. completed the upload. thought i'd sorted it out last night and went off to bed, only to come back this morning to find nothing done. but it's up now.
it's entitled "A Feeling" and it's a themed compilation of tracks which have some emotional effect on me. as i've said in the description, this can often be very tenuous, but thats not really the point. but yeah, it's 15 tracks, and a touch under 78mins which was unintentional, but if anyone's going to burn it to cd, will be handy. it's a good mix of dude vs chick, with 7 of the tracks having chick singers, 6 dudes and 2 instrumentals. i've included the original album each track can be found on in the comments attached to the ID tag of the mp3.
i really enjoyed compiling it, and i'm finding myself listening to it a great deal. so i hope someone atleast gets something out of it.
should i post the tracklisting here? are we doing that this time?
enjoy.
ps. i hope to get some browny points for the 3 canadian artists i've included... yippee!!

Benji - got it and loving it! full review in a day or two when it really sinks in...
Scott - did you make that mix yourself? As in, find the sounds and edit and whatnot? If so, i'm quite impressed. I used it as an actual 'soundtrack' to my sleeping - and after the bursts of white noise in the first ten minutes, it did lull me to sleep. i hope that was your intention.
