yes, i agree that plain MP3s is the way to go
does anyone else's arcade fire track play at a much lower volume than every other track?

The Arcade Fire track is much lower quality than the rest, that may be why. Saying that, I thought iTunes equalized the volumes.

i couldn't burn via iTunes b/c my computer isn't authorized to play the Bloc Party track
to ensure this doesn't happen again, i would suggest everyone burning a CD copy of their mix, and then ripping that to mp3s (if using iTunes MAKE SURE that you have it set to rip to mp3), and then uploading the mp3s.

you can use a program called j-hymn to unlock iTunes protected files, but only if you've purchased them. So we can't unlock the Bloc Party track, but if anyone wanted to include an iTunes purchased track on their mix, they can use that.

Oh my god, I didn't realize I would be causing so much trouble. Would it help if I emailed you that Bloc Party track or any other file that's troublesome?

no worries kiki, i just DL'd it from soulseek, and i will use my copy of the arcade fire for the non-FTPers, so it should all be kosher. someone had to be the guinnea pig who went first to work out all these kinks (ps i'm debating puting a kinks song on my mix - i love them but i feel like so does everyone else alive, so why subject you all to another kinks song you probably own?)

ok, with the threat of a good shivving on offer, I'll admit I know who the kinks are. Don't have any albums though. Who was the singer? Dave Rabies? ;)

benji is all ready. just need to finalise the running order and complete my track notes - sorry no artwork and i'll begin uploading on monday. have listened to my mix extensively over the last few days driving round the pit, and i think it's going well.
ps. i also don't own any kinks albums, but don't they sing "living on a prayer"?

so what are we doing review wise? i say we should review each week (sorry non-FTPers that have to wait) to keep up on them, so we're not super behind. if this is acceptable to most, then i will review kathryn's later today

Yeah, jazz and fun. Lots of fun. I spent the morning going through 6 or 7 disks and scribbling out songs I want. My son was bouncing on the couch to Art Blakey and I was tearing up during a Ella Fitzgerald tunes that's so damn perfect that it makes me cry.
And if I can listen to that Exene disk (that has a few sporadic good moments) you can listen to my jazz CD once. Deal? |

Ok, here is my Kathryn review:
Favorites: "Gonna Never Have To Die" - GBV, "Direction" - Interpol Least Favs: "O Superman (for Massenet)" - Laurie Anderson Comments: SHE DID IT! She made a mix that didn't include Bob Mould! She also made a mix with 2 REM songs that i didn't hate! Astonishing!
But in all seriousness, i really enjoyed this mix. It almost makes me retake my 'overrated' cries at Interpol, and it definetely had a bunch of great songs (including 2 that were in contention for my mix, but now have been pulled), as well as some good songs from some of the newer bands that my brother is into (Stellastarr*). Perhaps my favorite Kathryn mix thus far.

Brian, there is still time for you to join me and my crazy friend at Interpol tomorrow night in lovely, and I mean lovely, Montreal.
A word of warning though: I will be listening to nothing but Bob Mould on Friday on the way down to the Pixies show.

kathryn's mix
-
Favorites: Oslo In Summertime, O Superman, People Who Died Least Favs: This Modern Love, Sweet Troubled Soul
My first kathryn mix (I think)
I enjoyed this mix a fair bit. First time I've heard Nine Black Alps, Arcade Fire and Stellastarr*. I've read very nice reviews of these bands and their music, but can't really see myself buying or even downloading anything.
Of course, the GBV/Pollard tracks are great. (I used the "I've Owned You For Centuries" on my NA Mixer. Good choice! :])
Seems my wife had an english teacher in high school who was in love with Jim Carroll. Had his students listen to Jim's music, in class, and just write about it. As soon as "People Who Died" kicked in she sighed, "Oh Christ... not Jim Carroll..."
-
Listening to the Magazine track right now. Great, great song.
