Request! If you have not posted a tracklisting, can you do so please? I have Nic's off the email of the art-work, and some have already been posted. I know I don't have Sir Rock's. Thanks!

good morning!
mine is up. i've posted the tracklist below as well as the notes since it seems that a few people may be having a hard time accessing the word document.
CD Swap#5.fumanbru
Breakfast at the Fu’s
Tracklist
1. Queen Bitch – David Bowie 2. Wig in a Box – Stephen Trask/John Cameron Mitchell 3. Wake Up – The Arade Fire 4. The Bones of an Idol – The New Pornographers 5. Shine a Light – Wolf Parade 6. Out of Gas – Modest Mouse 7. Ooh La La – The Faces 8. Ping Island/Lightning Strikes – Mark Mothersbaugh 9. Girl – Beck 10. Fuck and Run - Liz Phair 11. 100 Ways – Porno for Pyros 12. A Fond Farewell – Elliot Smith 13. The Hazards of Sitting Beneath – Hayden 14. This Town - Neil Young with Crazy Horse 15. Cold Blooded Old Time – Smog 16. Fireworks – The Tragically Hip 17. Modern Dance – Pere Ubu 18. Search and Destroy – Iggy and the Stooges 19. Jackson Cannery – Ben Folds Five 20. Burning Love – Elvis Presley 21. His Kingly Cave - Asterid
As we say at the fu’s, a good well balanced breakfast is very important to start off your day! But more importantly you need a good CD mix in the morning to get your day started! Or non stop Frank. Music sets the tone for my day. I crammed in 21 tracks of songs and bands that I really enjoy. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of these. Hopefully there’s some that you haven’t heard and maybe discover something new. I am grateful to say that a lot of these songs and bands I have discovered here at fbnet! I loved the “tower of song” thread under the pong section. And it may be that one of these songs or bands on this mix came recommended from yourself! Also, I love movies so there is a nice representation of tunes that come from movie soundtracks.
The mix starts off with a David Bowie tune from the movie Life Aquatic. I always liked David Bowie but never heard this track before. Great morning tune to jump up and down and play air guitar! I enjoyed Life Aquatic- not as much as Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums but this is my favorite soundtrack from Mark Mothersbaugh (the composer- use to be in Devo) and Wes Anderson (director). Other songs from this movie that I included are Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue, and Search and Destroy. I also put in a tune that is one of my favorites that they played at the end of Rushmore- Ooh La La by The Faces. The second song, “Wig in a Box” is from a hilarious movie that I heard about at fbnet- Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Great soundtrack and great tribute soundtrack that includes the man. Smog- Cold Blooded Old Times is from the movie High Fidelity which is a great music movie and also discussed the finer points of making a mixed cd!
The Canadian content starts off at track 3 with Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up”. Hopefully you’re awake now and got the stereo cranked to 11! I included a number of other Canadian hosers that I am very proud of- The New Pornographers, The Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Hayden, Tragically Hip, and Neil Young. Modest Mouse is after Wolf Parade- Isaak Brock is a fan of Wolf Parade and helped on one of their cd’s. I thought Beck’s “Girl” fits in nicely after Ping and I like that Beck is so diverse in his music- similar to Frank in that way. Then followed by Fuck and Run. So naughty…yet so sad. Then 100 ways! 100 ways to shag/screw/fuck/make love? I really dig Perry Ferrel and also he’s a big fan of Arcade Fire. Also, a great friend of mine, was a huge Janes Addiction fan in back in 1992 when we traveled Europe together. I am eternally grateful to him for introducing me to the Pixies and Frank Black! Check out Paul Butler’s website! http://www.theotherpaulbutler.com/
He’s a fantastic artist. He’s received positive reviews by the Globe and Mail (one of Canada’s national newspapers) and has traveled the world promoting his art. He does a lot with collage. My favorites are “positive mental attitude”, “rockers”, and “manster”.
Ok, back to the mix! Elliot Smith- I started listening to him on a Frank recommendation! He said something like he couldn’t get “Needle in Your Arm” out of his head. I also liked hearing Elliot Smith’s songs in Goodwill Hunting and the Royal Tenenbaums. Really glad I discovered his music. Pere Ubu - Frank influence. Then Ben Folds Five following some serious punk action from Iggy (another Frank influence)! I believe that Ben Folds has described his music as “punk for wimps!”
To finish it off we have “Burning Love” from Elvis. I started to listen to Elvis after seeing Honeymoon in Vegas. (Also, there is a Honeymoon in Vegas Elvis Tribute Soundtrack which is very cool). As an aside Nicolas Cage is my favorite actor and his birthdate is the same as my daughters- Jan. 7. No shit! And, they also share the same birthdate with Frank’s baby boy Jack! No shit! So then we go from one king to the next- Elvis to Frank. Every cd I make has to have a least one Pixies or Frank Black song and when I read the rules to the cdswap mix you can see my dilemma! So I thought I would add a cover of the man instead. And how appropriate to include an amazing cover by some fb.netters- Cult of Frank and speedy_m! His Kingly Cave- psychedelic Elvis combined with Frank! Pure genious! And if you don’t like it then get completely fucked up then listen to it again! Plus Cult was the main man behind the fb tribute project and that is how I got my first introduction to the magical world of ftp!! Hope you enjoy.
Many happy breakfasts, Fu

Great tracks Sir, I wish I'd bothered with the CD swap now, but it takes me about three months to accumulate 5 good songs.

I cannot wait to get copies of all these. There is so much new music for me on all your mixes. I was racking my brain trying to figure out how I knew the name Asterid until I remembered about the fb.net mix after reading your explantion, fuman. Also, I enjoyed the enthusiastic explanation of your mix. Like I said, can't wait...(hoping Brian recovers and is able to mail this week!).

Heh. First thing I do when a new mix is ready is to check if no one stole my band ideas. So far I've been lucky, but I know Brian and I share similar tastes, and he'll post his before I do. Ah, the pressure...

Review: Sir Rock
Favs: "The Return of Evil Bill" - Clinic, "Crack The Whip" - The Spinto Band, "Twenty Cell Revolt" - Menomena, "Dummy Discards a Heart" - Deerhoof Least Favs: "Who's Got the Crack?" - The Moldy Peaches, "Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks" - The Rapture Comments: A fantastic mix! Sir Mikeabye has great taste in music (as is evident in the music his band makes too) and this had a load of fine tracks (including pre-mix favs of mine like Liars and Beulah [btw, nice acoustic version - where'd you get it?]). The Moldy Peaches are not my thing, even though once i was picked up on the F train by two fifteen year old home schooled girls on Halloween who wanted me to go with them to a Moldy Peaches show and then take them back to my hotel room. No matter how drunk i was, i was NOT into that. There is one Rapture song i really dig, but the rest seem like revisionist punk funk stuff. Besides for those two tracks, this mix was spot on. Deerhoof are one of those perpetual "i need to check them out" bands (Sir Rock even gave me one of their CDs and i still haven't listened!) and Menomena are now #1 on my need to check out list. Bravo Michael

Review: Surfer Rosa
Favs: "Pledge of Allegiance" - Louis XFU, "Silent Fire" - Upcleftcdowncrightcabc Start (phew!), "One Man's Shame" - William Elliot Whirlpool Least Favs: "Stonebreaker" - C.O.C. Comments: Possibly my favorite (minus the Stoner Rock genre comp) Surfer mix yet! You included my beloved Minus the Bear (who has a track on my forthcoming mix), as well as the Cramps who i enjoy, and the three new artists i mentioned above. This mix had a real nice flow to it and it also consistantly reminds me, as all of Nicole's mixes do, that my tastes have mellowed. But thats what i love about her mixes - they kick my ass in that senior year of high school sort of way.

Sir Rockabye: Faves: DEERHOOF, Rapture, World/Inferno Friendship Sty, Silver Jews Least faves: Ratatat, Suburban Kids, Moldy Peaches Comments: This mix was terrible. I hated every single bit of it. I hope you won't make another mix ever again, for the sake of humanity. OK, that's not true... I'm just trying to find something different from "Good mix! You have great taste!". But truth is, it's a good mix. You have great taste. It starts just OK though. The first 4 tracks are good but not really outstanding. The Clinic track could be great if it weren't for the annoying melodica or whatever it is. It's stupid but I tend to associate the melodica with Albarn for some reason (maybe there's some melodica on a Gorillaz record or something) and I don't like Albarn. Like, at all. Hey, I told you it was stupid... The other Clinic song (Distortion) is very good though. The Spinto Band sounds just like every other rock band of the moment, Kayser Chiefs and all. It's a bit too nice for my taste. The chorus is good. Liars, Menomena, TV on the Radio, The Rapture were all great. I have the Rapture song on the Rules Of Attraction soundtrack and I like it a lot. Great choice. Didn't really like Ratatat, somehow it made me think of M83, which is not a good thing. And now we're getting to the real revelation of your mix, Deerhoof. I had heard of this name before but had no idea who they were and I LOVED this song. I love Japanese singers. Let's see... I know Blonde Redhead, Pizzicato 5, Yoshimi from Free Kitten (not familiar with the Boredoms), and I've been meaning to check out Melt Banana. That's all I think. Anyway. The Deerhoof song sounds like Pizzicato 5 with heavy guitars, what more could I ask for. The following track (World Inferno sthg) was very good too. Never liked the Moldy Peaches much, last round VoVat put something by them that was better IMO (called Steak For Children). The voice of the Frog Eyes singer sounded a bit like Bowie. And to finish the Silver Jews were good, yet another band I only knew by name (I'm not a big Malkmus expert). I'll check out their new album. So, one more great mix from this round. Until then it's been of very high quality (count on me in 2 weeks to lower it...). What do I get by Deerhoof? I see they just released a new record, how is it?

I bet Brian is as excited as I am about this.

I'm PSYCHED.
<<This isn't exactly breaking news, since it was announced a few weeks ago, but it's worth mentioning anyway. Daniel Smith, AKA Brother Danielson, leader of the wacky Danielson Famile is releasing a new album, Ships on March 1st, 2006. Danielson (he's dropping the "Brother"... also considered was "B. Diddy") is playing with Deerhoof as his backing band, and Daniel Smith's good buddy Sufjan Stevens appears on the album as well. CMJ promises satisfaction to impatient vinyl fans:
While Ships has a release date of March 1 on Secretly Canadian, Smith will also drop three 7"-only releases sometime before the album, each under a different label (Kill Rock Stars, Anticon, and Sounds Familyre) and each with different people behind the boards (including Steve Albini and Mark Kramer).
The Danielson Famile definitely falls into the same love/hate camp as bands like Xiu Xiu, so this might not be for everyone... even so, Daniel Smith plus Deerhoof divided by Sufjan will be anything but boring. Here's the tracklist:
01. Ship the Majestic Suffix 02. Cast It at the Setting Sail 03. Bloodbook on the Halfshell 04. Did I Step on Your Trumpet? 05. My Lion Sleep Tonight 06. Two Sitting Ducks 07. When It Comes to You I'm Lazy 08. Kids Pushing Kids 09. Time That Bald Sexton 10. He Who Flattened Your Flame Is Gettin' Torched 11. Five Stars and Two Thumbs Up>>

Lofty praise indeed - thank you Brian. One of the quickest mixes I've ever put together I think - in fact had thrown it together before the space came available for this mix.

Before the Plane Crash is uploaded, along w/ a cover and a word-doc info sheet, which is presented below, for those who don't have Microsoft Word:
Welcome to the ubiquitous “Brian explains his choices” page for CD Swap #5, Before The Plane Crash. I hope you enjoy what I’ve been listening to for the past few months. I specifically tried to ignore the bands that I always put on these things (The Bad Plus, Sufjan Stevens, Ted Leo, The New Pornographers)*, so I hope everyone can find something new from this mix. Peace and Love, Brian
Before The Plane Crash
1. “Lorge” – El Ten Eleven – I found out about this band in, of all places, Entertainment Weekly. They are a great instrumental rock band from Southern California. It starts the mix out with a steady, building momentum. From El Ten Eleven. 2. “Autumn Almanac” – The Kinks – Even though we’re late into the season, autumn is still around us (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere), and who better to sing to us about the season than the Kinks, the most autumnal band I can think of. From the singles collection Kinks Kronikles. 3. “The Institute of Mental Health, Burning” – Peter Hammill – One of the many record clerks I’ve befriended over the years really pushed Hammill and Van Der Graaf Generator on me, and his album Nadir’s Big Chance is really the only one that ever stuck. 4. “Smile” – Onelinedrawing – A sweet little love song from one of the nicest men alive. Jonah Matranga also has some great work ethic and is an inspiration of how to be a successful musician and still be a nice guy. Plus, there is an R2D2 solo (I shit you not). From Visitor. 5. “Knuckles Forward” – America’s #1 Sweetheart – A Chicago band that I met at a Weezer show in Cleveland in 2000(following me so far?) that I’ve stayed in touch with over the years. This is the apex of their studio work, and unfortunately, their bass player from this era was diagnosed with, and died from, cancer a few months after laying this track down. I believe they have regrouped and starting to play out again. From their Sailors Like Jigs EP. 6. “Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse” – Minus the Bear – I saw this band when I was REALLY drunk once, bought the album, and then totally forgot about them until a few months ago. But they have some fantastic songs with some goofy titles (which have mellowed quite a bit on their newest album). They are probably the most played band of the season in the Salvatore abode. From Highly Refined Pirates. 7. “Generators, Green Electric Hum” – Unsung – A good friend of mine who I try and pimp whenever possible. I should be putting out his record early next year on my tiny label. From the forthcoming I Looked Back At My House, White As A Washing Stone. [/pimping] 8. “Future Killer” – The King of France – I swear I was onto this band before the hype machine (they were on my Vol. 1 mix dammit!), but they are worth the hype. Good, straight ahead rock and roll which I can still pay 8 bucks to see and not be cramped in like a death trap in NYC. From The King of France. 9. “Run, Old Jeremiah/Keep Your Hand on the Plow” – Liz Janes & Create(!) – Ok, so check this: a San Diego singer/songwriter with a folky tint, teams w/ a Los Angeles based free-jazz collective, covers a bunch of old spirituals and releases them on Sufjan Stevens’ label. Got it? This is one of the best tracks on an all around fantastic EP. From Liz Janes & Create(!) 10. “String Quartet No. 9 in E-Flat Major, Op. 117: IV. Adagio” – Dimitri Shostakovich – The only classical composer I currently throw in my everyday listening. I love the middle section of this piece – the silence acts as an instrument to itself. From Shostakovich: String Quartets, (Complete) Vol. 2 11. “Pet Politics” – The Mountain Goats – The Goats covering The Silver Jews. This one is for Sir Rock. From The Believer 25th Issue Compilation. You can get the fantastic magazine this comp came from (and featured other great bands covering OTHER great bands) at www.beleivermag.com (the magazine is a literary one, but once a year they do a music issue). 12. “A History of Lovers” – Calexico/Iron & Wine – I really had a hard time choosing which song for their recent joint EP to choose for this mix, but this was the most upbeat, and the mix felt a bit downtrodden to me, so here is some sunshine (but not really sunshine, listen to the lyrics). From In The Reigns. 13. “The Man Who Loved Beer” – Lambchop – I first heard this song as covered by David Byrne on his Grown Backwards LP, but I dug back and discovered this version, which I could picture coming out of an AM radio on a front porch in rural Tennessee in a Flannery O’Connor story. From How I Quit Smoking. 14. “Valentine” – Scott Amendola Band – I found out about Mr. Amendola from Nels Cline, who plays on this record, who I found out about via Mike Watt. I love how these things work. I had to put some jazz on this mix, c’mon! From Believe. 15. “Baby, You Gotta Change Your Mind” – The Wiyos – Back to the old-timey imagery of Lambchop for a minute. This Brooklyn trio puts on a real entertaining, seemingly authentic (minus the microphones/amps) Vaudeville-esque show. I saw them at the Newport Folk Fest while waiting for Kathryn to arrive. From Porcupine. 16. “If You Don’t, Don’t” – Jimmy Eat World – The reason behind my “Defend a Record” thread, Jimmy Eat World’s Bleed American is one of the best pop records ever dammit. Such a great song, I can’t even take it. 17. “The Ghost of the River” – The Anniversary – A band that is wrongly tagged ‘emo’ sometimes, The Anniversary’s first album was synthpop, and their second was a much more mature, solid record of quality tunes like this one. They broke up after touring behind this record (which I blissfully got to experience one night in Brooklyn). From Your Majesty. 18. “Tokyo” – The Books – “Thank you very much, and for now, sayonara.” From The Lemon of Pink.
*To make the optional Obvious Choices EP, seek out “Come on Feel The Illinoise!” – Sufjan Stevens, “Sing Me Spanish Techno” by the New Pornographers, “Let Our Garden Grow” by the Bad Plus, “14 Cheerleader Coldfront” by Guided By Voices and “Glass Concrete and Stone” by David Byrne.

Cool. Couldn't download it this morning but it may come from my FTP software. BTW, I'm not sure what you thought of the Carla Bozulich cover of Willie Nelson's "Can I Sleep In Your Arms" that I put on my last mix, but it's Nels Cline on guitar and Scott Amendola on percussion (uh... not sure there actually is any percussion on this particular track, but he plays on the album). One more reason for you to check out the record (the other reason being that it's the fucking best album ever).

i have been meaning to check it out for months now, denis. thanks for the reminder. i was listening to carla's vocals last night on 'drove up from pedro' on watt's wrestling record, as he calls it.

Just trying it now. There are about 8 or 9 junk files in there aside from the mp3's though.
[edit] - Ok, got all the files, though it did seem to have a little bit of trouble with them. On the downside, none of the tags have the artist on them, just the song title and album name.

wha???
[edit] just saw your edit, and i apologize for the lack of artist names. i always burn these to a cd, so it doesn't really matter if there are artist names or not, i just wanted them uniform. my bad. also, where are these junk files?
