Alright All,

Was wondering if anyone could give me advice on virus protection. I have recently downloaded limewire and as a result got myself a couple of worm viruses. I used to have Norton 2002, but that expired in March of this year. I currently have the free edition of AVG, which seems to be working alright in that it tells me that I have viruses and then locks the viruses out of harms way in the virus vault. Does anyone else use AVG, or does anyone know if this is good enough software to protect my system?

Earlier today when I was running AVG scan, my norton popped up and told me that I had a virus. The AVG came back with no problems, and then when I also scanned with Norton it said no problems, which seems a little weird to me.

Anyway advice would be appreciated here as I know jackshit about this kind of thing.

Cheers

Stuart

I know jack shit too Stuart, but I can tell you that I had to start a similar topic a while back after gaining quite a few viruses from Limewire.

It's a great program but you do run the risk with it.

I must admit Norton is, by far, the best antivirus program I've ever installed on my PC(s). Never had a virus problem since I started using it, 4-5 years ago.

I went to the local computer store today and bought a copy of Norton with a Keygen... does anyone know how one of these work?

Maybe it's a nerdy warning, but don't try to install another antivirus program if you already have Norton on your computer. You'll regret it.

Zonealarm. I did system retore at the time, you know where you set your PC to an earlier date, from before the virus. It seems to be fine now.

I cannot get Norton 2005 to work as the Keygen thing is crap so I am gonna delete it and stick with the AVG free edition as it updates virus definitions everyday so at least it is keeping on top of the latest viruses. Maybe I should upgrade it to AVG plus Firewall though and stop being a stingy bastard.

roffle, it came with a keygen. you obviously didn't buy a legitimate copy, keygens are for generating a registration key (which is something you get anyway if you buy a legitimate copy). hope you didn't spend much, cause you could have downloaded it for free!

i would never trust a free anti-virus, but AVG is meant to be alright. i use mcafee (AV and firewall). used norton internet security2004 but it broke after a while.

AVG antivirus (free edition) is what I use and it's pretty good. www.grisoft.com

Avast antivirus has a free edition too, and is what my parents use www.avast.com/" target="_blank">http://www.avast.com/

I have heard several negative reports regarding Norton. Where once it was excellent, it has become bloated and somewhat unreliable. AVG and Avast do just as good a job.

As for Firewalls - ZoneAlarm, Kerio and Sygate all have good free editions. I use Kerio as Zonealarm seemed to interfere with certain programs - freezing and such. Sygate is good too, but a bit more complicated. All of these are perfectly adequate, if you want a few extra bells and whistles then you can upgrade.

I used to run AVG and it did very little, I got a ton of evil little virusy viruses even with it. I use Norton now (not an especially legit copy) but I've had no PC trouble since then.

Did you ever get to meet him? Coogan is probably my favorite British comedian... the first few Alan Partridges are great (second series of I'm AP is a little crap though).

Back to viruses I think things are sorted now... got myself a legit copy of Norton and doing a scan right now.. 3 infected files and counting... opps no, 5 now!

This morning I ran my Norton software and it came up with 7 dodgy Adaware files that might be risky. Last night I had updated all files on Norton so that it contained an updated virus definition.

I forgot to uninstall my AVG free edition, and when I got out of the shower AVG had run its morning scan and picked up 5 worms on the system. Its weird that the updated Norton didn't pick up on these worms. Now I am totally confused! I assume Norton is the best but cannot understand why it didn't pick up on the worms. Any ideas?

I was going to uninstall AVG but am now having second thoughts.

You all know I work as a computer technician, don't you?

So maybe I shouldn't say that, but at home I only have a good firewall working. Never had a virus. Antivirus programs slow down computers.

how do you know that you haven't got a virus? ;)

Which firewall do you use whore? Is it a hardware one?

I was looking at my firewall log last night, and in one day (8th July) I had over 20 attacks on my computer by various trojans.

Good question. I check it with an online one from time to time.

I have Sygate Professional Edition. And my router closed as much as it's possible.

With that and a little care by the user, you shouldn't have much problems.

i once had a quicky job to sort out the computer at a local chemist cause it was infected with viruses... they'd just got broadband and hadn't got any form of firewall or anti-virus. literally it was a nightmare, it took me 12 hours or so. 1000+ spyware, popups everywhere, viruses that prevented anti-virus being installed or run... can't believe i managed to clean it in the end.

would have been easier to just format, but i think they were pretty bad with backing up and it had all customer records etc.

I am just installing Norton firewall now.... then I will delete AVG anti virus software. I have heard that Norton is crap once you have a virus on your computer, but is good in stopping them getting on your drives... is this correct?

system restore won't always free you of viruses, as it doesn't completely revert everything back, just some select stuff. plus, sometimes viruses are stored so when you revert back you just get old ones again.

regardless it's still a good future and has been a life saver for some. if you have Windows XP or ME you should be able to use system restore. if you have xp make sure it's on by right clicking my computer on the desktop and selecting properties and then going to System restore tab. make sure Off is not checked.

if you want to do a system restore, go to accessories in your program list, system tools, then system restore. select to restore to an earlier time and pick a date.

Cheers PixieSteve... just did a system restore... Ive installed alot of software in the past week but set the restore to two weeks ago... when it restored alot of the software that I installed over the past week is still installed. Computers are bastards at times, I wish I knew what I was doing. I guess I need to do a systems scan and see if the virus is still here.

Also, when I have do a live update on Norton, it starts updating the files and then fucks up saying something like 'Cannot connect to Symantec server' But surely if it couldn't connect in the first place then it wouldn't have started downloading the updates???

Arrrrgggggghhhhhh!!!

Thanks though for all your help guys, I well appreciate it!

If you have the time and luxury of doing this, I find that it's nice to just do a complete wipe of the system every once and awhile. I guess I'm a computer nerd, but there is just something nice about starting off with a clean install.

Some tips (maybe not expert but I've gleaned them from experience):

-- Don't install more than one virus protection program at once. I have had a bad experience with Norton once; it wouldn't let me boot into Windows because it thought I was a remote threat trying to hack the system, so it would automatically reboot the OS. Well, when it did this I would only have a matter of a few minutes or so to frantically try to discover the problem, at which point it would kick me out again, ad infinitum... I think this was a result of me having more than one antivirus app installed at once. I wouldn't say Norton is a bad program necessarily but I have always preferred McAfee, and since I am a cheapass and didn't feel like paying for virus updates I've been using AVG for about the past year.

-- With p2p file-sharing programs, you encounter alot of viruses but additionally from everyday use of the internet you can pick up all sorts of nastiness too. Download BOTH Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware, and run them both frequently. Spyware and it's ilk when left unattended to can really slow down your computer. (And, I've never encountered any problems from using more than one spyware removal app, unlike antivirus.)

-- Defragment your drive frequently.

-- PixieSteve touched upon this, but if you ever have a virus that your antivirus says it removes successfully but then keeps coming back, TURN OFF system restore, as it can be used to revert your system to an earlier time...when it had the virus. After system restore is turned off, then run your antivirus program again, and if it gets rid of it, it should be safe to turn system restore back on again.

-- I've also had the situation before where I've had to reboot in safe mode to remove a virus before.

Cheers Glacial... I got up early this morning and downloaded all the updates no problem. Now I just have to find a way of getting rid of a few adaware.exe files that Norton cannot seem to delete.

Whats a Defrag btw?

AVG seemed pretty good to me too... have you got the free version or did you pay for the AVG Firewall?? Ive gotten rid of it now and will keep Norton 2004 until it runs out in a year. Fucking computers!

Someone should get Dave Noisy to change this websites domain to http://forumsupport.frankblack.net.

When a computer puts info onto the hard drive it isn't always in a linear fashion. ie the data can be spread all over the disk. The more you use the disk and change the data on it, the more the data 'fragments', meaning the disk and computer has to work harder and less efficiently to retrieve it.

A defragmenter (windows XP has one you can run) rearranges the data on your hard drive making it easier for the PC to retrieve.

If you're running XP:

Start --> Control Panel --> Performance and Maintenence --> Rearrange Items on Disk to Make Windows Run Faster

Click on Analyze. It should just take a few seconds, and then it will tell you if you should defragment your drive or not. If you do have to defrag, it oftentimes takes a little while depending on your specs. (Mine usually takes about 20 or so minutes depending on how long ago I last defragged.)

Glacial / Llama,

I just did a virus scan using Norton 2004 and here is what I got:

Asm.exe Adware.topsearch Adware Found
Asm.exe Adware.topsearch Adware Found
Asm.exe Adware.topsearch Adware Found
Asmfiles.cab Adware.topsearch Adware Found
Asmps.dll Adware.topsearch Adware Found
Asmps.dll Adware.topsearch Adware Found
Gsda.dll Adware.gamespyarcade Adware Found

7 files detected, none infected by possibly risky... thats what Norton said.

Is this spyware? Norton won't let me delete this and gives me the option to exclude these files when I next do a virus scan.

Cheers guys
