OK, so I'm trying to lose some weight. Any hints/tips?
I think I have a reasonably healthy diet, and I cook most of my own meals (no processed junk). I've just started back on the salads to accompany meals, plus I'm trying to eat more fruit (it's a bit more easy now the sun's out).
When ever I possibly can, I get off the train a stop early and walk to work (15-20 mins brisk walk, once or twice a day), and I'm also trying out sit-ups. I don't like these.

Suggestions, anyone?

I've lost a lot of weight, mainly through poor* eating, although I do still eat greasy food. And I still got a belly on me.

*I mean, not eating so much. Greasy food is 'poor eating'!!!

This is not true. Performed correctly, sit-ups are an excellent core exercise. Try a variety Simon. Sit-up, crunches, reverse crunches, leg raises, etc. Try and work your obliques as well. Core strength is very important, and is VERY good for your back.

All very well, but that could just as well be in Klingon for all I understand it. You're talking to someone with a deep-seated abhorrence of exercise here.
I think my technique is probably pretty bad, but I'm guessing it'll get better, I dunno.

Sadly, cutting down on alcohol helps the weight fall off. Couple that with cycling/running (whatever distance is comfortable) 2-3 times a week initially and gradually increasing and you'll be well on your way.

Basically, healthy diet + exercise = low fat cheese

I discovered that Red Bull has an odd effect on me, so I actually have cut out the drinking, but I take your points on board, definitely.
I wonder if my problem is, that I'm so unconditioned to prolonged exercise, the muscles start to ache very rapidly. I like walking though, and that doesn't seem so bad. I'll have to get a proper routine going.

My problem is, also, that low fat cheese tastes really bad. This may be altogether more tricky.

try this, buy a pedometer and on your first day of wearig it don't walk more than you normally would and make a note of how many steps you take. The next day top it by, I dunno 100 or 250 whatever you think is feasible, then keep trying to beat your daily step count till you think you have hit a comfortable limit. Make it a self-competitive thing for motivation.

Also, keep a food diary, tedious but enlightening.

I started trying to lose weight about a year ago and have lost roughly 18lbs. I started exercising on an exercise bike a couple of times a week, and only about 10 mins at a time at first. I gradually increased that over time ie going to 15 mins, 3 times a week (or increasing the distance). I did that for about 5 months till I could comfortably do an hour on the bike. Exercising 5 times a week - you need to give your muscles rest days.

Then I started running as well, and mixed the two up, gradually increasing the length of run too.

I can now pretty much eat and drink what I want, as long as I maintain the exercise. In fact I reached a stage where I had to eat more to give me fuel to burn whilst exercising.

It's like saying "while". Is British.

I think, for losing weight, it is important to have the mental motivation to do it. Almost as much as HOW you go about it. For me it has been about realizing I don't want to be unhappy with myself when it is something I CAN actually change. There are so many things that are not in our control, it is nice to realize this is something you do have the ability to change. That's a very simple and PAT answer, but it's been working for me... in combination with the boring shit like "eating less" and moving.

That's less than ten stone, you're a whippersnapper.
Let me do the maths...
I may be 225 pounds, I'm not sure. I'm a tall guy though, I carry it well.

[EDIT for poor maths]

I've lost nearly a stone this last month just by getting out and walking everywhere, every day, and having properly organised meals

I'm not quitting smoking though

It makes the running a bit easier, until you get caught in a hail/sleet storm and ice sticks to your top as you run.

Also check you Body Mass Index (BMI) and set an appropriate goal weight. Your BMI should be less than 25, there's a calculator on the BBC website.

This is one of those things where you get out of it what you put into it.

Walk an extra stop on nice days? That's not going to do much of anything for you. Get off work and work out for an hour 3-4 times a week....then you might see some results. You really need to increase your heart rate for about 1 hour at least every other day. Walking doesn't accomplish this. Good excerises you can do w/o spending a dime on a gym are; jogging, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, dips, stairs/bleachers, etc.

I see fat people walking around all over the place when I go out for my jogs. Makes me wonder what they are trying to accomplish.

hawken, a very good and timely point. Today's NYTimes has an article
that makes your very point! One must sweat and work out, not
jog lightly or just walk here and there. Though those are good
things to do, they won't help your body burn its fat storages.
